Hydro Junkie...I met with the hydro owner over the weekend and got a good look at the plans. He definitely missed the inside risers on both sponsons. It looks like Dumas only beveled the outside of the left sponson at 45 deg. I won't be able to start fixing it until the weekend and will consider just adding the inside risers with new ride pads as well as removing what is there already and starting with a squared up block of styrofoam so I can be sure I have the pads at the correct height and flat level. To me, the hardest part will be re-glassing the repair and and finishing for paint. I also have to replace the driveline with 1/4 inch cable and a 5/16ths tube. Probably the smartest move over the weekend was to give the owner some experience on the radio with a simple deepvee. We are going to keep up with the practicing on small vee's and cats so he gets the hand eye coordination necessary to even attempt wheeling a hydro. When we see he can get a Miss Vegas around the buoys and back to the dock then well see if he ready for his boat. Thanks for the Newton pics. Do you recall the thread on a 1/8 scale hydro build that shows the Dumas hydro bottom?? I saw it the other day, but can't find it again. You were part of the dialog. If you know what I am refereing to, maybe you could send me the link. I think it was on IW. Thanks again. Roger C.

All of the boats looked really good, not sure about the chest high launch on the Vector's run though

Roger, is it one of these:
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_10828546/mpage_4/key_/tm.htm
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_9618442/mpage_9/tm.htm
If the one you're refering to isn't one of these, I'll have to check IW when I get home from work which won't be for another 2.5-3 hours

Okay, I'm home and found the following:
http://www.intlwaters.com/index.php?showtopic=45564&st=60

This is the only one I found that showed the boat built with stock sponsons. I would advise AGAINST using foam inside the pads. If the pads leak, the foam will absorb water, some foams quickly and some slowly. If you leave them hollow, you can always drain out the water with a simple hole in the transom. Another option would be to leave the back of the pad open and just seal the inside with epoxy. Two center ribs running down the length should be enough to keep the bottom flat between the outside frames

If you need a block of blue foam, I have some I can give you on Saturday. Unless I'm missing something, I see foam being the best way to fix it. Epoxy the foam to the bottom, shape it, and then add 1/16" ply. Just like a rigger sponson. Blue foam will not absorb water very easily as far as I know.

Craig, Thanks for the foam offer. I will keep that in mind as I decide how best to re-construct the ride pads. Dale may also have some pieces left in the kit that might help retain the proper contour of the inside risers as well as the bevel on the outside sponson. I will have to see what wood he has left. FYI...I removed the boom tubes from the gas rigger. They measure .625OD .500ID, seems like pretty common 5/8ths aluminum tubing. I will check Debbie Supply to see what they have before looking at McMaster Carr. I do hope to run on Saturday...but I am still not sure what chores I have to address first. Roger

Looks like McMaster has .509" ID and .495" ID in 6061 5/8" O.D. aluminum tubes.

Roger, forget about the kit's foam. The kit has the white foam that falls apart at a touch. If you decide to use foam, go with the blue instead

Craig if you haven't put away that needle I used. Could you give me how many turns out My needle came in the mail today. If Bill did come we could put the 3rd channel back to work on my .45. No one uses-em here. Were you put down the control arm may be way off. Then I could use that needle on my .21 rigger. And we all could learn how a 3rd channel works. I will not be able to come early on Friday in Elmira to help setup.

Neil,
This is the needle I used on the Don Ferrette base (http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCN51&P=ML). A few comments as this is being made overly complex. When trying to dial in the motor, set the needle manually, not with the servo. In other words, set it like any other manual needle. On a 3PM Tx I set the 3rd channel control to the DT3 switch on the pistol grip. You have to be able to make changes without looking down at the radio. The switch is momentary in both directions. Right should lean and left should richen. Make sure this is correct and double check the servo direction. The needle and base should be fine (not coarse) for 21/45 engines.
Bill

Hydro Junkie, Thanks, I'll use a piece of blue foam if I think I need it to help keep the new risers squared up. All I'd like from the kit is the diecut inside risers at least to use as a pattern. On the plan the inside riser appears to taper and curve upward as it approaches the low speed step, adding a slight curve to the front of the ride pad. Anyway, I'll be digging into this over the weekend and give you an upadte next week. Roger

. I may need to go into isolation for testing
Drive-line is IN I added a wooden wedge to the stuffing tube, no T-bar I need to set-in one more fiberglass cloth. Working on the radio box today.then test soon

Craig, I found a nice piece of 5/8ths OD aluminum tube in my stock bin that I bought to repair another rigger project. It has a 1/16th wall, so I will need to bore/drill the ID out on a lathe. I actually had Curtis from Dan's do the boom set for the project rigger about a year ago. I'll see if he can do another set for me. This is what a guy will do to save spending another $30 on another piece of tubing with a thinner wall!!! Roger

Sounds like Saturday will be another good turnout!

Roger, are you going to bid on the Lynx molds? They are up for sale on IW's. You can sell the hulls through Dan's.

They are .625 OD .495 ID 6061 and 24 inches long.

Joe, I placed an order for the tubes on the Zipp site. Bring the tubes with you if you come on Saturday. Even if I can't make it you can leave them with Craig, and I will pick them up. If you can't make it just ship them. Thanks, Roger C.

Are you gonna run boats on Saturday?

I'm going to take some pictures of us this Saturday for the June Roostertail. Thanks Luc! From the west side, I'm thinking of taking a shot of the drivers stand and pit area with two boats passing by at full speed.

I solid mounted my .12 rigger remote needle. It was flapping in the wind before, that may have been a problem, or not.... Worth a try anyways.

Craig, When we were looking at the needle hanging out the side of the JAE...I was thinking that spray off the sponson, or just the force of the 'wind', could be bending the tubing back and interrupting the fuel flow. I have left them 'floating' on a tunnel and not had any issues, but the needle was pretty well blocked by the cowl. No Tunnel Thursday for me tonight. Hope to see you all on Saturday. Roger

Yah, I won't be running either. I'm working on the gas mono cowl tonight. I should be running the gas mono this Saturday! The .12 rigger too!...

Roger, will spray enamel paint adhere to gel coat? Would I need a primer? I am trying to decide how best to blacken the windows on my gas mono cowl. I'm not looking for perfection.

When redoing the stuffing tube on my gas mono, I noticed the tube bent out of shape at the middle. It bent enough to hit the hull and put a 1/2" stress crack in the bottom gel coat! Not sure how that happened. I'll need to work harder to get a gradual bend maybe, but there was hardly one....
