I know it's not to everyones taste ( I suppose thats one of the things that I really like about it ) but here are a few photos of my finally finished Futura.
I say finally finished, as I have been flying it for a few months undecorated, as it came out the box. I have been waiting for the paint shop to quieten down, but just doesnt seem to be on the horizon, and with plenty of planes in the queue for me, as well as a important customer project needing some colour I decided that I would go with my first choice scheme, as it might be possible to get it done in vinyl on-top of the gelcoat finish that the model is supplied in.
I am really lucky in that one of my close friends is in the vinyl business and was willing to help at short notice. Duncan who is a member here, pulled out all the stops and in just two evenings took the all white futura and really bought it to life.
I have already rattled on loads about how great a flying plane the Futura is ( better than I ever expected ) bit now I am over the moon about it's looks as well. I had this scheme on a composite Kangaroo years ago, and remembered how striking it was. Thanks Dunc and Acorn Printing in Coventry ( shameless plug I know but they do deserve it)
Regards Al

Not bad. The motorsport schemes always work well. What's the underside like?

The wrong scheme certainly makes this airplane ugly as sin, but with the right one is very appealing. I like yours Ali.

Thanks guys. I am with you Doug on the colour scheme making or breaking this plane. I am quite fussy about schemes and spend a long time trying to work out what will look good on certain models. I have seen so many cases ( Even with full scale ) where the scheme ruins the lines of a model. The Futura is probably more prone to this than most, what with it being such a " Interesting" shape.
The canopy was also one of the areas on this model that bothered me. I was never a fan of the clear canopy option, only because it meant leaving a gap/frame around the clear section, and to me this altered the shape of the canopy. Which I prefer running to the line of the top hatch.
Anyway... each to their own I guess.
Mark... Ohh I dont know! I have seen some motor sport inspired and applied paint work that hasn't exactly pressed my buttons Underside is dead simple for the moment. A black band running from the nose ( That hides the nose wheel cut out ) all the way back down the belly of the fuselage. Wings and tails are plain white and may stay like that as the top side id quite vivid so the plain underside is quite a contrast.
A few more photos.

Ali,

Are those pictures taken on a golf course or a flying field? If it is a flying field that grass is the cats meow. I like the plane. I remember looking at some pics of another one in green and white and was not smitten at first but this scheme is simple and effective. Bet that plane would look AWESOME in gold and black with some steel symbols on it (Steelers fan obviously).

What is the weight? It is bigger than I thought it would be.

John

Hi John,
Neither... Thats basically the back garden ( Yard ) to a country house called Weston Park. It's the venue to one of the largest model shows in the Uk. The grass is super short, a little bumpy in areas but nothing to trouble a decent trailing link gear. Also the trees are pretty close which makes things fun. That area behind me is in fact the runway and flying area.
I liked the scheme on the green and white when I first saw it at Jet power 08 but was not keen on the nose, canopy or fin shape. Luckily Thomas the designer altered them before the kit went into production.
Weight with the P-200 Sx as I have is 42 lbs. Super light for its size.
Regards Al

Not that i'm biased at all, but the futura looks the nuts with some colour on it, it has definately change my view on the model

Dunc,

I fear you 2 kicking off the tedious McLaren paint jokes but did you get around the compound curves without wrinkles etc? What did you do with the fin fillet that is supplied in yellow? Painted? Also, is the black canopy paint or vinyl??

Cheers,
Mark

Mark as if i would !!

The fin fillet was bonded on, filled and painted white before i got my hands on it. The canopy was painted by Ali and the curves worked out really well. I don't think there is any wrinkles in it, a bit of heat, a tug and lots of talent sorted out the wing tips etc lol.

The part i was dreading was the all black underside, but even that worked out really well. All the fine areas of vinyl had the edges sealed to prevent them from lifting, so it should last well. The beauty of the vinyl is that the black had a sharp edge, something that's impossible for a certain McLaren painter ( sorry couldn't resist )

Thanks Lior.
I am not sure if it will be at Jet Power
a) because I have someone wanting to buy it already and
b) All being well I hope to have a big L-39 to fly for Tomahawk at the event

Dennis. It should be at Wings and wheels. Gives you time to get your legs waxed and show me what a proper set of pins should look like sticking out of shorts

Mark.... I told you vinyl was the way to go Less wrinkles on this than mc larens paint. Duncan is forgetting to mention that my support and assistance during the application process made all the difference

Ali.. what's the deal with that inlet shape? It almost looks like an afterthought from the designers. Like they designed the airplane and then someone asked "How are you going to get air to the turbine?" Either that or the pics don't show them very well. It appears as though they have about 1/2" of just flat area around them. Not exactly the most clean profile aerodynamically.

Considering one of these for my JC Mammoth. Anyone flown one in windy conditions? Just wondering about the light wing loading.

Rob.

Rob,

Mine was fine! It wasn't blowing a gale but was windy. I do think you need more than the 160 it is 'designed' around. It's a big, draggy airframe. If I could do mine again I'd go P180 or equivalent. Probably doesn't need a 200 but what the hell, you have a throttle stick right?!
