I have seen a 1/32 WW-2 USS Gato that was around 8-9 feet long before. Try checking out this site, www.subcommittee.com as they have listings of vendors in their links section. You may find what your looking for there.

Hi,

Unfortunatly, 32nd Parallel is defunct. I do not know if anyone else is building Gato boats in 1/32nd anymore. Too bad, they are true sharks of steel. However, Engel does produce a 1/48th (they call it 1/50th) scale Gato boat. I can tell you from first hand experience it is not for beginners. If you want one talk to Frank at Subconcepts He can order you one or you can also order direct from Engel in Germany. Expect to pay $1700-$2000. for the kit. Take a look in my gallery and you will see mine.

I saw this RC sub when I was at the US Navy's Carderock MASK basin in Washington DC. I was there for the video shooting of my Alligator Jr. model for the Discovery Science Channel show (to be aired on Oct 5) on Brutus DeVilleroi and the civil war submarine, the USS Alligator. I built an RC model of the prototype of the Alligator, and Dave Merriman did the main shooting model of the 'Gator itself. The Navy uses the sub to test new propeller designs it is about 20 feet long and they run it indoors in the Maneuvering and Sea Keeping Basin at the facility.

More shots on my website at RC-Submarines.com Alligator Jr. project

This one crushed my fingers loading it. This is Horrible Harry's Big freaking type 7! Took both of us to lift it. Not finished yet. And I thought the pool was too small for my type 17!

Sounds good. The bigger they are doesn't mean the better or hardest to make. We should have a smallest RC Sub thread, that takes skill.

Nicky,

Like the guy said in "Down Periscope" "It'll go all the way to the bottom" However, for R/C purposes usually 6 feet is about as deep as you want to go. Depends greatly on the type of water you are in. Some have better radio transmittability(?) abilities than others. Other variables include your transmitter batteries, receiver batteries, antenna length, etc. I did speak to Chris Cloke (owner of Sheerline subs) about a month ago and he told me he had one of his boats down 11 feet and was able to bring it back up. Said it took him a while though.

SS,

I believe I am right in saying:
If a body of water has a higher level of conductivity, then the radio range will be reduced. Substances like salt (sea water) or chlorine (pool water) increase the conductivity of the water.
(That is the technical side of it)

A mile? Nah, if your sub is that far, don't even bother trying bringing it back! Like Michael said, the range you get always depends on other factors around you. But one thing is for sure, don't drive your sub to where you can't see it.
