just move the servo arms to the opposite sides, done by removing small screw in center of servo, pull up on the arm, replace it 180 degrees from where it was, and you should be good to go.

Hi Jim,

I can feel your pain. Even with a "high tech" DX7 I occasionally have to reverse a switch to make things right. To be safe I always range check and check control reaction before every flight.

KKKKFL, you slipped in on my six unnoticed. Yes, I will be rubbernecking better in the future. Gotta remember to maneuver more given that six o'clock blind spot.

It turns out that with the stock placement of the elevator and rudder servos, the arms will be blocked from operation. The servos could be moved to the sides of the fuselage to solve the problem by reversing the control throw.

Jim, I succeeded in destroying at least one receiver in my vain attemps to accomplish the same servo mission as you. Live and learn.

Well, as early patriotic inspirational WWII movie fighter pilots said as they signed off, ". . . over and out!"

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED
Wildcat, master and slave transmitters performed perfectly in our latest fighter training mission.

Useful information includes the procedure to preset the slave transmitter throttle just above half depending upon wind conditions and demonstrating "lazy eights" using only elevator and ailerons while keeping the ship upwind. When the cadet gets in trouble its very easy to take back control and fly back into a convenient attitude before giving control back to the trainee. Its great to see a budding new fighter pilot fly his first lazy eight. Its just a matter of time now untill new high spirited indomitable recruits will join our ranks.

Ten minute training sessions drain 1800 mAh 15 C 3 cell batteries down to a nice 11.2 - 11.4 Volt storage level.

Maybe I shouldn’t tell on myself, but, when I flew my Wildcat for the first time, I was pleased with the way the plane was flying, until... I made what I'm sure is a rookie mistake while only about 40 feet up. I banked left while flying toward me, and rather than giving the correct input to level the plane I moved the stick left again and she rolled over and dove into the ground at a little over 1/2 throttle. It happened pretty darn quick! The impact broke the prop, shattered the cowl and severed the fuselage just behind the firewall.

While waiting for a new fuselage, i picked up a T-28. I have flown the T-28 several times with no incidents to speak of.

So, I got the parts to rebuild the Wildcat, put it together and flew it yesterday for the first time, again. This time all went well and I was able to do a loop, and roll and make two nice landing. I realize I don't have the stick time to be an expert, but I think the Wildcat is much more sensitive to control inputs than the T-28. Even with the Hi/Lo set to low the Wildcat responds instantly to input and keeps me on my toes. It also seems much faster in a straight line than the T-28 to me.

All and all, I love the looks of the plane, and now that I know what to expect of it, I look forward to flying it more and growing into it.

So my next question is, is there a slightly larger battery I can use to get longer flight time? I would prefer a battery that fits the same space and won't weigh a lot more.

Thanks for any info.

Jim

Hey Jim, great to read your post for more reasons than I have time to list due to the thread time limiting feature. You and I have the dubious honor of being the very first Wildcat pilots to actually crash and tell about our pride and joy mentioned on the thread. Yes, mine was pilot error also. As I have done sucessfully without any problems many times before, as the ship was coming around the bottom of an outside loop concentration was lost and like in your case when I pulled back on the stick rather than continuing to apply forward stick pressure - instant disaster. Live and learn.

To answer your question I have found that my spare 1800 mAh 15C 3 cell batteries work great with the Wildcat to provide significantly longer flight times with the F4F. I also like to use flexible 11X4.7 PKZ and GWS props for their slower flight speed and improved vertical flight performance.

Rich

Rich,
Nice to know I'm not alone.  However, I can see where this plane would force a beginner to become a better pilot.

Are you refering to a battery like this?

http://secure.hobbyzone.com/catalog/HZ/catalog/catalog_batterieslipo/PKZ1031.html

I have one that came with my Trojan.  It is longer than the battery that came with the Wildcat, it should fit in the holder with a longer hold down strap.  Is the extra weight a problem?

Jim

Jim, we are not even about to be alone. Though we are not exactly running over with posters at the moment, let me assure you that a lot of modeling enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts as well are keeping up with the events on this and other "fighter threads."

Carefully trimmed F4Fs can be easily as "trainer like" as the T-28 as reported by others who have both planes. The PKZ prop mentioned above can really tame the Wildcat down.

The extra ounce of the big battery (I have four (4) just like the one in your referenced URL) can be noticed; but in my case where I dug a lot of "dead wood" out of the fuselage behind the CG of the plane using sharpened metal tubing; moving the servos back some and adding a "hole filled" plug of spounge plastic in the front of battery container to get the CG right; I ended up about 3 ounces lighter (actually more like 2 ounces - my scales can be a little tricky) than my old "War Weary Wildcat" - I like light.

I also like power, so to get the most performance with the 11X4.5 prop I added a 30 amp ESC and use 4.5 ounce higher "C" batteries. I save the stock ESCs for my "pristine" condition P-51 that is even lighter than my present "Pristine" condition F4F. I love the way it flies!

Out.

WILDCAT VS. MUSTANG

Under beautiful flying conditions yesterday right on the Oregon/Idaho border the flying performance of the P-51 and F4F in back to back flights was virtually identical even though the GUNFIGHTER is two ounces heavier than the Wildcat. Both planes are equipped with GWSEP1147B (11x4.7) props. More testing is needed.

I found that a lot less right wing tip weight is needed with these lower pitch props. It is going to be interesting to see if they will beat the eight (8) inch pitch props that I have been using at high altitude - research to be continued.

Out.

Jim, please consider yourself an expert new newbie in discussing the performance differences between the F4F and the T-28 for even newer newbies than yourself. The problem with us much older "newbies" (?) is we have lost some of that extra sensitivity that you still have. So, for the sake of real newbies it would seem to be expedient to remember your impressions and repeat them any time they might be useful for prospective new fighter pilots.

You forced me to go back and reread the thread. I needed your input. Thanks to your inspiration I think I got it.

Continue to, "Aim High - Fly - Fight - Win!"

FINAL "JUST FLY AT ANY ALTITUDE" TEST PROP

After the inevitable stresses of maiden flights with my new RAF S.E.5a it was such a relaxing pleasure to put up two flights testing a GWSEP 10806P prop.

Having not packed my magnet balancer and ream, I invented an evidently practical emergency prop balancing system while visiting Washington State. I had bought the new props on the way to an important mission. I just couldn't resist a target of opportunity that added to my necessary logistics support. Fortunately, I had a Boy Scout pocket knife with a slightly modified leather punch blade that worked reasonably well as a ream. The blade of my NRA clip on "pocket knife" worked very well by sighting through the hole while centering the prop to determine balance. Once a heavy blade was detected and tentatively scraped/sanded it was then centered on the blade by flipping the prop over and reversing it 180 degrees to check lateral balance from all four lateral positions. When I returned to home base it was shown that the props were very close to being well balanced.

It remains to be seen how well these props will perform at high altitude and in cold weather. There is a definite resonance at a certain medium range RPM that I definitely intend to avoid in an effort to prevent prop failure with these very light but fragile props. I love the way they perform at low altitudes in fair weather.

The "480 Brushless outrunner (960 Kv)" in the SE5 is so high in performance that I intend to stock up on enough of them to have the option to install them in any of my fighters that are equipped with their now obsolete 480s.

Out.

I flew my Wildcat Sunday evening and it went down into a very tall tree. I was about 100 feet up and 300 feet away making a right turn when the plane just seemed to dive down into the trees. Since I haven't been flying very long I assume I made a mistake. I was flying at about 50% throttle when this happened so I am thinking I banked too much and lost lift.

At that height, I perhaps may have recovered, but I happened to be over a 80 foot tree at the time.

I was debating if I should leave it there, or hire a buddy I know that cuts trees for a living to climb up and get it, but it was windy Monday and the plane fell to a much lower group of branches and I was able to recover it today.

Overall there is very little damage, nothing some glue and paint won't fix.

The plane has a pretty good size nick in the prop and blood down one side of the fuselage. It looks like it hit a big bug or small bird. I didn't see it hit anything while flying, but that far away I may not have seen the impact. Could that account for the dive into the trees?

Also, since the

battery was plugged into the reciever for three days, should I try to charge it or right it off?

Jim

I plugged a fresh battery into the Wildcat and the ESC started smoking. I unplugged the battery immediately and removed the ESC from the plane. I guess having the battery connected to it for so long was more than it could take.

I need to replace it now, should I get a bigger ESC, like a 30 amp, or just stay with the 18 amp that came in the plane. I'm just asking in case I want to use a bigger prop or make some other upgrades to the plane at a later date.

Jim

Got a new E-flite 30 a ESC and hooked it up, turned out the motor is screwed up. It will turn when you give it throttle, but it grinds like it is full of rocks or something. I'm beginning to think the crash may not have been my fault after all. With the blood on the plane and the motor messed up, I think there is at least a slight chance I hit something making the plane go down. Yeah, I know it's a long shot and the plane is still messed up, but if I can tell myself MAYBE, just maybe, I didn't cause the crash, then I feel a little better about investing the money to repair the plane.

And, as long as I have it apart, I'm going to repaint it into the pre war yellow wing VF41 scheme so I can see it better.

I’m also thinking about creating a landing gear dolly that will give the appearance of gear down, and can be used for take offs, but will drop off on lift off similar to what the Germans used on their early jets and rocket planes.  I‘ll still have to land in the grass, but it will give me an option for display and  take offs and be cheaper than the retracts that are out there.

Photos when I'm done.

Jim

Great reporting! The last time I seemed to loose control of the Wildcat, after calming down, I somewhat reassuringly convinced myself that I had hit a down draft. That might have been what did in your machine.

It's great to see you continuing to drone on to the target in spite of sneak attacks by possible stealth enemies. The dandy little F4F is my weapon of choice whenever circumstances force me to choose only one plane for long (vacation) missions.

Out.

Nice bird! From the carbon marking around the .50's (fitties) I can tell you've no doubt shot down a few Zeros in our ongoing campaign against imperialism. Good show!

Nice looking paint and detail work there BRITTURB.  I've ordered the canopy/cockpit kit and cowl for mine.  I hope mine looks as good as yours when I'm done.

BRIT, congratulations on being an artistic leader. At some point after I move into a larger house that will conveniently accommodate more fighters I would like to order two (2) backup F4Fs, one set up like yours and one with invasion stripes on the bottom side in order to do my part in the war to defeat the rampaging Huns who are attacking Britain and other places where Western Civilization in its weakened state is in peril.

AMEN, Sakai!

Having been timed out by a dastardly enemy while trying to post messages here, I'm outta here for now.

Out!

You never know when Parkzone will pull the plug.
Look at what happened to the 109!!
Just when i was getting enough money to get one
Had paint scheme all picked out.
SE5A and the T-Bolt do look nice and ready for some paint though.

BRIT my good man, please check your six (post # 428 on the ace five star Messerschmitt thread) and click on the new Mk-IX Spit ad, scroll down to the Messerschmitt and bail out quick before you explode.

Enjoy your ride down on your parashoot. Don't feel bad we all have our off days. I recently crunched my Wildcat's tail by carelessly setting the ship down in a motel room and if that wasn't enough while repairing one elevetor tip, I damaged the other elevator. Got 'em fixed, but it was embarassing to pull such an unbelievable trick on myself.

Out.

The paint and body work is done.  The plane is back together with new servos and ESC installed.  I am waiting on the new motor to arive and it will be complete.

I also plan to add the Park Flyer Plastics cowl, canopy and drop tanks when they arrive.

I know the paint isn't perfect and I used the "it looks close" method of scaling stripes and lettering. But it should be easier to see and it doesn't look like every other Parkzone Wildcat.
