My brother and I have found a new material for balancing these war birds, and would like to find a few bata testers for it for some feedback. We call it 'Steel Powder' for now. It is very fine, almost like talcum powder, and when mixed with 30 minute epoxy, makes a very heavy paste that is easily poured or brushed in the front of your cowl or anywhere you want more weight. Nice thing is it also adds great strength to whatever it is applied to. Because you can get it right up behind the prop, it takes less weight to balance. I think it is a also a great alternative to working with led.

Here is a picture of it inside our P-47 cowl.

I plan to ship it via USPS in their flat rate boxes. All we ask is the shipping for these bata tests.

Please PM or email me if you would like to try some of the stuff.

Gary

I do the same thing with #8 lead shot, lead epoxy pie. Lead is denser requiring less material than any thing else I can find. I do use a forward cowl mount when added weight. Keeps from getting a heavy cowl shake.

This kind of activity has baffled me for years, why not just get larger batteries and add usable weight? Does this make too much sense?

Because for giant scale warbirds most often we need pounds of weight up front in order to balance. And when I say up front I mean forward of the fire wall. Now how big a battery pack do you know that weighs at least 2 pounds and would fit forward of the fire wall. Yes there are times a bigger battery just behind the fire wall would do the trick. Try doing that with a 85 inch Bearcat or 100 inch AT6.

What are you suggesting, led acid car batteries? The amount of weight we are talking about (as much as 6lbs or more) on the average giant scale war bird is not possible with the high tech A123 or similar batteries. I know that even the old NiCads don't weight enough, and where do you pack them anyway? Packed around a hot engine? Not sure why you are so baffled at our new solution.

Just PM me with you mailing info and how much you would like (I will have it in 5lb bags), and I'll put a package together for you. Again, we are not charging for the material at this time. Just need the shipping covered. I know you guys will love this stuff.

May need some for my 102" ME109. Only using a Sachs 3.2 up front. How much of this stuff do you have. It would also come in handy for 1 1/2"x10" weight sacks for building wings. Help keep the wing flat on the table.

We are looking into getting it by the 55 gal drum. That would be over 3000lbs of the stuff!!! I have about 50lbs on hand right now. About 30lbs is spoken for I think. I used about 6.5 lbs in the nose of the P-47.

I never thought of using it for building weight, but you are right. It would be just the ticket. Just a small sandwich bag full makes a heck of a weight. It could be poured into empty paint jars or such as well.

Sound neat.

As far as the lead shots, it has been outlawed in NY. Meaning... you cant go into a gun shop and buy this stuff anymore.

Hey Nevell, we are not selling it yet. Just giving a supply out to get some feedback. I'd like to send you a bag or two to try. Shipping is $5.25 for a 5lb bag, or $11 for 10lbs in the medium box.

We are working on a price base. I'll be mailing some out and be looking for some comments on it's use.

Gary

Great idea. I wouldn't have thought to. In fact, I think we will take some to every war bird event we attend. Thanks.

Yes, I very much want to come. We now have a B-25 to fly with the P-38.

Update. I have (4) 5lb boxes shipped out to those who have sent in the $5.25 shipping cost. Thank you for trying the stuff. To others that have shown interest, please be patient while I hook up with you via PM or email. Trying to sort out RCU handles and emails etc.

I just used the Steel Powder to add nose weight to KMP Corsair and I am very pleased with it. I made a container out of balsa using Ca glue. I then mixed the 30 minute epoxy in a paper cut then thinned it. I kept adding the powder and stiring it until I had a thick mixture. I then placed it in my balsa box making sure I had no air pockets. After the mixture cured I sanded away the balsa on my belt sander then sanded it to the final shape. Each block weighs around 5 ounces.
Have good one,
P51Tom

Nice work Tom. You are the first one I have seen use it that way. Very cool. Glad it worked so well for you, and thanks for posting your experience. It has to be nice not to need a smelting pot.

How does the weight/volume compare to lead, tungsten or steel? I've been using tungsten powder for years, but it's pricey....just curious to get an idea of the volume comparion between the materials.

Good question, so I did some testing and here is what I can show you.

As you can see, the lead strips from Great Planes weighs 5.4 oz. I then fill a plastic cup to 5.4 oz of Steel Powder. You can see that the volume is very comparable. Because the powder is so fine, it is very dense and heavy. It also mixes with the epoxy for the same reason.

It is actually steel powder, hence the name.

By the way, the 5.4 oz, as you can see, cost me $4.99 plus tax. That means that for 7lbs of it, you would pay $103.50, plus tax. We ask $15 for the same amount of Steel Powder.
