Hi guys: My question is: what is the distance between rivets on a full size Corsair. I had started out to use 2 1/2 inches and scaled that to one-half inch for my 1/5 scale Ziroli Corsair. They look to far apart. At an air show yesterday, I saw a couple WWII era planes and their rivets were 1 1/4 " apart, which would scale down to 1/4" for my ZCorsair. Help, Thanks, BobM

Bob, I am sorry to say there is no simple answer to your question. The rivet diameter and spacing vary all over the airframe and even on the same panel. In general 7/8" is common and with the smaller 1/8" rivet in areas of reinforcement it can be 1/2" spacing. The rivets are no closer to the panel edge than 1 1/2 times of the hole diameter. You really could write a book about the subject. Also the Corsair is noted to be the first production aircraft to use spot welding as a means of constructing the aluminum skins to the panel reinforcing structure. In other words the fuselage skins are riveted to the airframe only (usually) around the perimeter of the panel and spot welded to the fuselage formers within that panel. All of those skins can be replaced as a panel from factory jig drilled replacement panels. I hope this made some sense and helps. Lex http://www.BrewsterCorsair.com

The Corsair was unique, the panels were mostly spot welded and had few rivets.

Lex: WoW: Your web site is inspiring. I'm of the WWII era; growing up a few miles from Willow Run bomber plant in MI; seeing those planes fly over our farm starting at daylight 24/7 so low you could almost touch them. But Corsairs are my modeling passion. Thanks for your info. I think I will go with 1/4" spacing on those flat rivets, seems close to scale.

Lex: Again, thanks for your informed reply. I have another question. Here it is: I am building a Zorili GS Corsair 93" WS, etc. On the full scale bird, the right wing had a spoiler added after early manufacturing, around 42 or 43 to the -1A and all subsequent builds. This spoiler was added to assist in eliminating left wing tip stalling on landing. I have put my guess as to size of this on my build. I saw a full scale -1D at Oshkosh a couple years ago and was about 6" in width( works out to be about 1 1/4 " on model). My problem is the piece I built seems way to large depth wise. I guessed it was about 3" deep full scale at the wing leading edge, which translated to around 1/2" on the build. Just looks way to big. Question does anyone know the depth on that thing as measured from the leading edge of a full scale -1A so I can scale this thing more close to what it should be.
