WWIIBIRD -> JK Aerotech what can you tell me (4/7/2002 8:48:44 AM)

I am looking at one of their planes either the Corsair or FW 190.
Anyone with one got some advice? How they fly, durability, service.

T.I.A. Brian

lmcguire -> JK Aerotech what can you tell me (4/9/2002 10:50:22 PM)

Just recently purchased a FW_190. I built it over the course of a few weeks. It took me no more than 10 hours of actual building time. I was pretty impressed with the overall turnout. It is exactly what they said: not pretty, but good enough. I haven't flown it yet, but I will try to reply afterwards and give an update. I need to rebalance slightly.

A friend of mine flys the MIG 3 and it flys great. I am building the 1/12 scale Mustang. They look good in the air and fly even better, just don't look too close. They have a great web site!

Demon -> LOVE those JK Aerotech planes! (4/10/2002 6:57:01 AM)

I've been flying them for over a year now and have yet to destroy one in combat (over 27 rounds of 2610 Scale last year and at least as many midairs).

The Corsair is a bit slower than most Scale Combat planes while the Fw-190 with a good .25 is a real screamer.

My personal favorites are their Zero and P-47:

Hey Demon...where did you get the cowl for your Jug? I have one that I haven't built yet - but I would really like to get one of those cowls for mine!

Demon -> JK Aerotech what can you tell me (4/10/2002 8:42:14 AM)

Hey Kraut,

All of my cowls are PETG pop-bottles pulled over my own home-made wood molds with a heatgun. That humungous Jug cowl's mold barely fits in a 3ltr bottle.

SKYLORD -> Your Finsh (4/11/2002 1:21:57 AM)

Hi, can you us how you got such a good finish on your foamie? Is it tape and paint? Fiberglassed?

Please tell me your secret..........

Larry

Demon -> JK Aerotech what can you tell me (4/11/2002 6:45:21 AM)

Larry,

Thanks for the compliment!

My JKA planes were all built as per the JKA instructions (including all of the Strapping Tape and dowel-spar reinforcments), with one exception:

I use EconoKote or TowerKote covering instead of the recomended Packing Tape for covering. Then that is scuffed with 000 Steel Wool and painted.

The Zero pictured is painted entirely with gloss Rustolium paints(Dark Hunter Green, Smoke Gray and Black). The Rustolium colors are fuel proof and can be used as-is with no clear coat.

Rustolium metalic colors, flats and satins are NOT fuel proof! Only the gloss colors are.

The P-47 was originally painted with 21st Century Olive Drab topsides with Rustolium gray primer undersides and Yellow Rustolium tail with a coat of Krylon Acylic Satin Clear. Most of the 21st Century Olive Drab on the wing chipped off in numerous midairs. So, those areas were repainted with Testors SAC Olive Drab and cleared with the Krylon Acrylic again.

Not all Krylon clears are fuel proof - ONLY their Acrylic Gloss and Satin clears are. They also have Enamel and Laquer clears that ARE NOT fuel proof.

Hope this helps,
D

SKYLORD -> Another Question (4/12/2002 1:22:49 AM)

Do you spray with 3M77 then cover???

Larry

Demon -> JK Aerotech what can you tell me (4/12/2002 2:35:11 AM)

Yes, I spray on a light coat of 3M77 (NON-Acetone Formula) and let it dry for at least an hour before ironing on the covering.

Also forgot to mention 2 things:

1) I always fibergalss the center 6" of the wing with 3/4 oz. cloth and epoxy. Sparying 3M77 on, then laying the 'glass cloth on that and squeegeeing the epoxy on with an old credit card really makes for a neat and hassle free job.

2) All of the trim and markings are/were done with "Sign Vinyl". This stuff is identical to "Trim Sheet" but costs only about $13 for a 30' (yes, 30 FEET) x 15" roll.

SKYLORD -> Thanks! (4/12/2002 3:20:22 AM)

I'm just to the point of covering and I will try your method.

thanks,
Larry

Demon -> You're welcome! (4/12/2002 5:26:15 AM)

Be sure to post a pic of the finished plane when you're done!

Here's my JKA P-51D. Its the only one I built using the Coro doublers for the cowl (and it does work great this way!).

21st Century Aluminum this time with 21st Century Olive Drab anti-galre panel with Sign Vinyl trim and markings. The 21st Century paint dries hard as a rock (TOO hard) and that leads to chipping. But hey, Tower had it on sale for $2.95 a can... :D

dugman -> JK Aerotech (4/12/2002 10:14:28 AM)

I have two J.K.A. models. One is a the Coursair the other is the FW 190. Both very nice fliers with the Norvel 25. I would recomend the fw190 for combat since it is lighter and faster. I used tape originaly on both models but after an hour or two the tape seems top allow fuel to leak and the tape began to delaminate. I would spar the wings and use a ultracoat type covering from the start and save yourself the hassle of recovering later. In the future I will also spare the tail at least.
A few weeks ago we had a combat meet and the only two planes remaining were my FW 190 and a friend of mine who had an all couroplast plane. The other built up planes were either totaled or disabled enough to not be able to fly for the rest of the meet.
Happy Flying
Doug :D

WWIIBIRD -> JK Aerotech what can you tell me (4/13/2002 3:51:23 AM)

Thanks for all the replies and pictures. Thats what I was hoping to hear. I won't be flying combat just lookin for a warbird "funfly". :D
Thanks
Brian

SKYLORD -> P-51B (4/27/2002 4:14:11 AM)

My new JK Aerotech P-51B. It flys great! Many tanks to "Demon" for the building tips.

Skydog -> JKAerotech (4/27/2002 8:58:11 AM)

The guys at JKAeroTech are fantastic to work with. My club is starting up a Combat group so we went to JK for our first kits. Five builders so far and each one seems to be pretty impressed with how these things go together. JK uses the pink insulating foam board and the stuff is really easy to work with. So far we only have three ships flying and of those three all are said to fly exceptionally well. I have the Corsair and it flies better than some wood ships. I am using the OS25FX with a 4oz tank. I am flying it with elevator, aileron, and engine, no rudder. I put teflon skids on the bottom at the low point of each wing gull, one forward on the fues, and one aft. The aft skid has a hole in it so I can tie on the streamer. It flies fast, tracks like it's on a rail, and general flying is a pure joy. Even blasts through the wind with very little bobble. I put a 1/4inch square spruce spar in the top of the wing set in epoxy, so the wing is very strong but weight came out a bit heavy. The airplane flies fine at the higher weight, but it is over the 3lb limit for official combat. I am at 3lb 4oz. Flight times are on the order of 9 to 10 minutes and I still have fuel on board. I would not hesitate in buying another ship from JK. I took my time and have 28 hours invested in building, and the result is one fine looking Corsair.
It's now my favorite at the field. Hope that helps you out.
Have fun, I sure am!

Skydog,
The RCCA's rules for this year have a weight limit for 2610 Scale single-engine designs at 3.5 lbs. You're in! ;)

D

Skydog -> Rules (4/28/2002 4:51:43 AM)

Thanks! I just saw that myself and thought I remembered 3lbs being the limit. Man am I glad it went to 3.5! Way cool.
Thanks for confirming that I wasn't just dreaming!

Clean -> JK Aerotech what can you tell me (4/28/2002 6:09:23 AM)

I did a review on for the RCCA board for the P51B. Mine aren't near as pretty as Demons, but they sure do fly well. This is the kit I was using at Junction City 2 weeks ago after I ran my Zero through a JDB Bearcat, totally demolishing it.
