Hi Gang,
Can someone tell me why the trainers from TH have that very thick wing tip and that sharp cut?
I built up and older wing and was thinking of thinning out that tip and rounding it off and have an even taper on both bottom and top.
Will this wing tip chang make the plane fly a bit faster?
Thank you.

Yes, probably a little faster, but I doubt that it'll be enough to really notice.

For the most part, our trainers are just ridiculously overpowered, adn they're purposely designed with a lot of drag so they'll slow down when we need them to, like for landings. More skill makes us able to handle more speed, and lots of guys clip the wings of their trainers once they've moved up to higher performance planes. It's a good place to experiment -- relatively low risk as long as you're already competent with the plane.

Vegas,
I think the wing tips on the Tower Trainer are designed mostly for good looks and cheap/easy assembly. I've seen lots of tip shapes and they all seem to fly. It's a good place to personalize the looks of your plane.

Hi Al,
I myself never thought it would make a speed machine out of the trainer but I think the wing tips feathered down and rounded off would look better.
Thanks for writing.

Hi Tom,
I have to agree.
I never liked that very sharp cut they designed into the tips.
I see Tower Hobby now has a new Polyester film type covering that only comes with the ARTF trainers.
Well it's going slow due to Summer time fun but I started to build a nice J-2 CUB
60" wing span and I guess when the weather cools i'll be spending more time on it.
Thanks for the post.
