That works, but dont use steel wool, it can get sucked back into the motor and mess it up bad.

For the pad, you will want to clean it out occasionally since the waste oil will stick to it and gum it up.  It is a good way to quiet the motor down though.

In your experience using this method to lesssen the exhaust noise, does the engine lose any of it's max rpm.

I haven't done it with these engines, but I did repair a holed muffler on a chainsaw once this way and I found no difference in performance, but I was able to hear after I was done.

Quick question...
I run 32:1 fuel in all my Zenoah engines.
Can I use it in my new DLE20 even though the manual says 30:1 ratio?

Thanks for the help.

What's the maximum weight you'd feel comfortable to 3d with this engine paired with a JTec Pitts muffler?

Tops would be 8 lbs to have pull-out with some authority.
6.5-7.5 lbs and it's a missile!

Based on a Vess -or- Xoar 17 x 6 prop.

Jtech Compact Pitts or Stand Pitts? I have both. The Compact knocks about 300-400rpm off the top. I didn't notice as much difference with the standard. People are flying the 3DHS Velox with good success at 8.5lbs. I would say, no more than 8.5lbs on a stock muffler of or standard Jtech.

Hi folks.
I have a quick question.
I did have a quick trawl on this thread but then i saw how many pages there are!!
Could someone tell me what size prop i should use for breaking in my DLE 20. And also, for how long should i keep using the break-in prop before changing up for better performance.
I was told to go stright to a 17x6 but i vaguely recall reading somewhere that i should use a 16x5
Opinions would be appreciated
Jamie

Start with what you'll end up with....no 'break-in prop' but the one you fly in the end.

Lots of pages because there's loads of info here!
Do read Post #1

Has anyone run a 16x10 Zinger on this motor? I grabbed one for $2 the other day.

Zinger? Aren't those best used to stir paint?

Get a real prop, Xoar or Vess!

I have 2 Xoar 16x8 and 17x8, but it is always good to have a spare, so I got a 16x10, Probably has the same pull as the 16x8 Xoar LOL

I tried a Zinger once - got it cheap at a trade show. I was amazed at how much power was lost using this prop - lost about 1/2 the thrust of an APC. Hard to believe someone can sell a prop that's so inefficient. Guess they don't call them "Zinger"s for nothing.

As a spare, maybe.

But comparing a Zinger to either a Xoar or a Vess is like night vs day.
If there's maybe 15 brands of props in the world (maybe more), then the Zinger's are at or near the bottom with Xoar & Vess at or near the top of such a list.

Yeah, its a spare prop, as long as the DLE20 can spin it.  Heck maybe if the Xoar is too hot, the Zing can slow it down LOL

Am about ready to start rebuilding my 70" Revolver with the DLE 20. But first... I have a generic gasser tuning question about my XYZ 50.

My XYZ 50 wasn't running great - wasn't getting high RPM's (was hitting maybe 5500 or so, instead of 7000 (that it should hit with a Xoar 20x10 prop), so I did some work on it tonight. Put on a new muffler (the old one had holes from crashes), checked inside the carb diaphragm and looked for dirt, and changed the manifold, between the carb and the engine. (the old manifold was pretty beat-up, also from crashes).

So now the engine sounds better and runs smoother at idle and through mid-throttle But when I get close to opening it (3/4 throttle) the engine bogs down so much it almost cuts out. I opened the High speed needle, but it didn't seem to help much. I opened the HS probably 1 - 1.5 turns more than the 2.25 it's supposed to start at. Any suggestions? The carb looks clean - no blockages or dirt inside that I can see. And the diaphram looks healthy. Should I open the Low speed more? (would have tried this but it was getting late). Thanks.

Sounds a lot like your ignition battery isn't good enough to do it's job. Try a new one?
Btw....have fewer crashes!

Well, you DID mention 'crashes' several times, so I thought I'd throw that clue in there. LOL!

So, what you are saying is, don't take a crash course in landing techniques, eh?

(I know this is not about a DLE 20, but I think these issues apply to all gassers, so... )

So I've got the XYZ 50 running nicely now. Steady idle and very good high end (will tac it tomorrow). Was a combination of opening the low speed needle and also adding liquid gasket to the surfaces and gaskets around the carb manifold. Seems like there might have been a slight air leak that was increasing with the higher RPMs. Now with the liquid gasket she's running very nicely. I also saw that the Halls Sensor had loosened slightly and shifted a touch, so I re-centered that. That didn't seem to make a difference.

One more recent issue with this plane - now when the engine is running the elevators shake and move intermittently on their own - my guess is radio interference. This intermittent movement is independent of whatever controls I do. I've had this plane for over a year and this is a new development. Can radio interference pop up out of nowhere? From what I see I can't find any obvious wear on any cables. Am wondering if Ch 2 on the receiver might be going bad (though the elevators work fine when the engine's not running). Any other thoughts? Guess I can swap in another EI to see if that's the cause. Any ideas on what I should look for that might be generating radio interference?
