I have flown several of the HOB 1/2A kits and they fly great. They all have the same basic wing so I think that the Monk should be a good flyer also. With the lighter radios of today an .09 would not be to much. The 1/12 scale combat guys have used .15s in the ME109 and P51.

Came across this old thread and thought I'd add to it. I had the chipmunk. It was a great flying plane on a norvel .074. This is the perfect engine as its extremely light weight and can fit in the narrow cowl and only show the muffler. Used all HS-81 micros and had four channel control. It was pretty aerobatic and handled the wind nicely. I eventually sold it to a buddy who had to have it. He was new to flying gas and had only flown some gws planes. I would take off for him and land it and he'd fly. On his third flight after being warned several times he was flying to far away for my eyesight and I wouldn't be able to save him he finnally ended his plane. He was not very cautious with his setups or flying and I could tell the plane was gone when he finally looked over at me (180 degrees from where he was flying) and asked if I knew where the plane was. It was an odd question when I could still hear the plane was full bore somewhere. There was soon a far off crunch so I knew he landed. Originally another friend who owed me money traded his building skills and built the plane for me. It was a great looking plane and I was a little upset when this kid hammered it in even though he bought and paid for it. But it was a lesson from his wallet and I made him take the LOOONG walk of shame by himself to recover his parts while I fired up my plane a had a great flight..... in close where I could see it. ha ha

Oh and as far as other tips the 300ma rx batt had to go under the tank to balance well. Just had to carve a pocket out of the bottom hatch.

I had the Monk as well. I lived in Denver Co at the time and had to resort to an OS .10 for power due to the elevation. It was a fun plane but had a tendency to tip stall during landings if you didn't keep the speed up. I have thought about building another except this time I would replace the plastic turtle deck top with balsa and try to lighten it up as much as possible. That is one tough plane if you build it per the plans. I sold it to a friend 4 years ago and he still flies it! Maybe I should by it back now that I live at a lower elevation. I say go for it!

Yep. Mine would get tipsy if you slowed down too much as well. Actually, it would more often than not be flying one second and the next second would drop without a lot of indication. But I think the big difference at the time was I also was flying a Herr Texan of the same size and it would float in as slow as you could go due to its flat bottom airfoil. The chipmunk is semisemetrical which handle the wind much better but required a little speed on landing.

I flew most of the HOB series when they were first introduced in the 70's. But at the time we used 2 channel and a pressurized TD 049. There is no weight penalty with this combination and throttle is not really needed for the plane. Of course your aerobatic routine is a little limited by the lack of throttle and rudder but the plane was really designed to go reasonably fast for a 1/2A plane and be reaosnably aerobatic which it is. Oh and they look really cool doing it too.
You might want to try it that way but make sure that you do use a pressurized motor. Small motors have a tenancy to surge and die on takeoff or hard nmaneuvers. Pressurization takes care of that.

Dennis..... How did you pressurize - pressure tap off the backplate?

Hogflyer,
Your correct. We did pressurize by drilling and JB welding a small piece of brass tubing into the backplate. You then blackened a piece of .006 music wire . Stick that into the brass tubing and solder the tube shut. When cool pull the .006 wire out, the soot from blackening the wire keeps the solder from sticking to it.
Joe krouse at KK kustom Models made a beautiful backplate with a pressure tap with a one way check valve to keep it from flooding while filling.
You can also open the venturi on the TD a few thou and by all means use a KK nva if you have them.
Today though I'd just use a bladder tank and do away with all that plumbing.
The downside of the TD is it has a tendency to blow up if pushed much over 22K. I have had some of the older AME Norvels up to 29K with no problems. Havent' run a revlite yet.
Incidentally since the plane is small and the speeds have to be kept rather high you might want to build that wing with a little washout on the tips, you'll find that your landings get rather ho hum then.
The Chipmunk was really a nice flyer, but the one I liked most was the one that HOB never brought back and that was the P-39/63 Aircobra

I bought one in 1998 and it's still in the box. One cool thing is that on the reverse of the plan is the Beechcraft Bonanza plan.

BTW, the nickname is Chippie.
