I've been very impressed with the performance of this boat with the stock engine. The best prop/thrust with this engine seems to be with a APC 11x5 or at least my engine likes that pitch of prop.

The speed and acceleration is very good with the stock .46, but I have the itch to try a larger engine on this boat. The k&b screemin' .48 or the webra .50 speed seem to be a good upgrade path for those wanting to keep the balance of their boat without adding nose weight.

If you wanted to go ballistic you could mount a 60 size engine inverted with a pitts style muffler. The inverted engine would lower the center of gravity and help balance. For some extra thrust you could shim the engine mount using about a half inch of wood which would raise the inverted motor enough to allow a 12 inch prop.

Do you guys think I should try the GMS .76 with a 12x5 prop?
Ok, so maybe the goal isn't to get our boats stuck in the trees but it sure would be fun trying

I was thinking of putting wings on mine!

Sporty,

The tower .46 is 16.9 oz and puts out 1.75 bhp @ 16,000 RPM

The OS .46 is 16.4 oz and puts out 1.62 bhp @ 16,000 RPM

The OS .61 is 23.6 oz and puts out 1.90 bhp @ 16,000 RPM

You guys are right the .61 weighs alot more and would need some work to keep the boat from blowing over. I hear good things about the Tower engine, but it dosen't cost too much more to get the OS .46. I'm a big fan of OS and my local hobbie store has tons of parts for it if I need them, so I definatly will go with the OS. It will be a week or two before I buy the engine so I will wait and see how the .61 works for that other guy, before I decide what to buy. Guess I would like to buy the larger one so I can use it in a large trainer plane in the future!

agreed im starting to doubt the whole .61 size engine idea, there are too many mods involved, i will however buy the 11x5 to try, i bought the 11x7, and 11x6 so i wasnt sure if i wanted to race the engine that high but oh well... i do like the idea of raising the mount to support a larger prop...

I got my nose cone in the mail and I installed it and got back on track for the break in process.

However I have noticed some gas on the top of the glow head. I checked my plug to make sure it was on tight. It was. I also checked the head screws and I torqed them some, but still seem to have some nitro fuel. maybe the head gasket is bad or missing. I would have to take it apart and see. I do not have any fuel lines close buy to be leaking at that area.

My guess it is the head gasket. I will have to get one. But it does not appear to be leaking bad enough right now, so I might take it and run it today.

As for the .61 engine. I think it would not be that hard to deter me from doing it. it just a money thing right now for me.

I was gonna go with the tower .61, I think it is the same size as the tower .46 in regards to mounting. I do not see alot of mods here and they do not appear to be hard to do.

did anyone do this mod yet ?

wow,

what a day !

I got my finger cut in the prop ! nice gash.

My yellow boat, stopped working on the water, aparently there was some water/rust on the battery connectors in the compartment. Not before It crashes and broke again the throttle control line.

I got some better stuff from local store, some nice tubing that I think is gonna solve this problem.

The red one, I did not have broken in enough but was able to get a light run in on it.

Now some sorta good news.

Some people that I know that are also into boats were there and he has a aquacraft and quess what what on it !

a k&B .61 engine, said not hard to install at all. He picked it up used and was trying to get it going, but had a little carb trouble.

But Next weekend if i bump into them again, i bet they will have it running good and screaming.

I was having trouble getting my engine to run properly. It seemed to lean out after keeping the throttle full after a few seconds. However richening it up didn't seem to make much difference. In fact I could turn it out 10 turns and it still would run lean. Anyway I was out horsing around trying to flip it because as of yet I hadn't. I managed to catch a wave with a sponson and flipped it over. (Thanks to my son for diving in the water and brining it back.) Anyway got the boat back, took off the hatch and poured the water out. Wasn't too bad. Then took off the glo plug and squirted some after run oil in and cranked the prop a bunch of times. Decided the best way to get the water out of every nook and cranny was to start it. Took a while to start but finally did. Guess what the engine now runs like a top. No sag at full throttle. (At least today.) By the way what sort of RPM are you getting with the stock set up. I"m at about 9400 after 6 tanks.

I do not have anything to check rpm's with. But the guy that has a aquacraft also said that I should run a 10x7 prop. to keep the rpm up. So I might get one.

I had to patch my boat, it had a whole in it from the crash, I love epoxy ! I got my cable re-did and the tubing is alot better and stronger.

I am gonna install some rubber ballons pretty quick to water proof the electronic's.

I also added my 6oz round tank and it fits under the cowling, sticks out some but atleast I got the cowling on.

you want to turn the other needle out a 1/2 of a turn. the located at the throttle. that should take care of that problem.

I do not have any after run, but when I got mine soaked, I drained it and got my fuel in there and started cranking until i got it running. since the fuel has the castor oil in. I knew that would help prevent any rust or problems

I got sick of water logging my electronics, so I piked up some non-corrosive silicon (most silicon is corrosive!) and sealed everything.

My receiver is now completely sealed in a silicon cocoon. To seal the servos I removed the four screws that hold the 3 piece housing together and sealed each section. If you try this be careful not to get any silicon on your servo gears.

For a finishing touch I put some di-electric grease on the battery contacts and on the top of the servos. After doing this mod I no longer have any issues with rust or moisture effecting the controls. The next step for me is to add a nicad pack with a charge jack and seal the front hatch.

Considering the low speed envelope of the boat what type of prop do you'all think would be most effective, a longer prop with less pitch or a shorter prop with more pitch. I tried a 10x8 prop and it seemed slower than my 11x4 or 11x5 props, but the 10x8 was on the engine before it was fully broken in. Man I wish I had a radar gun.

I've heard that the old flitecraft air-boats (very similar to our boats) were very impressive with a .61 size engine. What are your thoughts on a 3 bladed prop vs a 2 blade?

Till next time,
Dan

I took some ballons tonight and some zip ties and did my reciever and my battery.

I may look into doing the servos with silicone, just looked like to much of a pain to do the servos with the ballons.

Hey sporty! You might want to go out and buy some after run oil. It will really help your engine last longer. Yes there is oil in the fuel, but the nitro, and methanol attract moisture! It dosen't take too long for bearings to rust when not in use. You don't have to buy after run oil at the hobbie shop. You can use all kinds of stuff. Air tool oil, Marvel mystery oil, transmition fluid, some even use WD-40. Pretty much any oil that displaces water.

Some people will say that WD-40 isn't good enough, others swear by it. It's diffinatly better than nothing!

After running spray it in the carb, or in the glow plug hole. Turn over the engine a few times and your good to go. WD-40 works good between weekend runs, but I would get something better for when you store it over the winter. After run oil, and Marvel Mystery air tool oil are the best. Some people mix half Marvel Mystery oil half transmition fluid in a bottle to use. If you want more info, go to the engine section and type AFTER RUN OIL in to the search. You should find several posts. That question comes up alot!

Nope, i decided to hold off for a bit on the engine, i did buy it just dont have time to messs with that type of upgrade now. but i did install an autobailer that helps remove water from inside the hull while driving it... it is a 2 way valve they run 6.99... very nice touch helps drain the boat when your done too, just hold it upright....
