Fellow Flyers,,

Spun my cub into dirt nap this morning...

My Saito 56 needs a new plane to fly...I was looking for some recommendations for sport flying or scale for this motor..the weight seems to be around 5 pounds or slightly less for this motor to fly reasonably.

Any help would be appreciated

MrSand

GP RV4 was fun! I flew mine for 60+ flights until I dumb-thumbed it with a lapse of attention.

A ModelTech SE5a is fun, too.

I don't know if you're after an ARF or kit built. That said, I have a Saito .56 in a Sig Citabria that is just perfect.

Unless you already have one you should add a SIG Somethin' Extra to your hangar.

I second that....I once had that very engine on a SSE....loads of fun.

A few years ago I had one in a Seagull Spacewalker.
Nice and calm flying combo indeed.

I have several Somethin Extras and have been around a lot of builds where I work. I would recommend the Saito .72 over the .56. The .56 would pull it around fine, but it wouldn't have the extra power to have fun with the SE on high rates imo. However, there is the prop size problem. I have a 2 stroke in the one I'm flying and used an APC 12.25x3.75 prop at one time. I built up a 1/2 inch block under the main gear and still had to take and land nose high. It was all fun.

The Sig Kavalier is a great model for the .56.

Allmost ANY 40 sized plane would be fine. I have a 56 in a Balsa USA Phaeton II and it flies fine, not over or under powered just real comfortable. I also have one in a Midwest Aero Bat and it does graet.
You might want to look at a super sportster unless you are into something more high winged. Telemaster ?? ENJOY !!! RED

Hangar 9 40 size Ultrastick. I had one with a Saito 56 and thought I wanted more power. I switched it out for a Saito 82. It flew better with the 56.

You can order directly from Sig Mfg. or have your hobby shop order it BUT CALL FIRST to make sure what you want is in stock. Sig has been out of kits/ ARF's for quite a while but are back to cutting kits again. I placed an order back in June and it arrived within a week. They say they will have all kits available by the end of July. They also said NO ARFs right now and they don't have any idea when they will be having any available. Graves RC has a few Sig ARF's and kits in stock last time I checked and you can find them n RCU marketplace.
Good luck.

WCB... Your account that the smaller engine flew it better is one that I can relate to. I once had a Sig Kougar that flew very well with a .40 and at some point I thought, heck lets try a .60 on this thing... it flew much better with the .40 and I went back to it.

The Saito .56 is a fine engine. I've one in a Flair Sopwith Pup and it flies well. I've the older Saito .50 in a Goldberg Anniversary Cub and it also flies well.... I've not thought more power was needed for either.

I had the motor in a World Models Clipped wing cub....it was a great motor for the 63 inch span plane..the plane probaly weighed about 5.5 pounds...I agree the motors better suited for 40 class planes...still I need to find the right airframe...probaly something acrobatic or sport weighing less than 6 pounds

The Great Planes Rapture 40 is a great sport plane with a Saito 56. Pretty easy to build too. Regards, NM

I have flown a similar sized OS on a Kadet Senior and Seniorita, Tiger II, 4 Star 40 and an Ugly Stik. Got some decent aerobatics out of the Tiger and Star.

Works best if your flying style is smooth and steady and not rocket fast.

I had the OS 52 in a GP Super Sporster ... lovely combo ... the plane is small for a 40 sized so it goes great with the FA56.

The .56 is one of those engines that everyone agrees is a great engine with nothing bad to say about it. It has good power and very good torque.

Sig MidStar, FourStar 40 or Goldberg Tiger II. I'm just finishing a MidStar. I needed a home for my Enya 53 four stroke.
