Missed seeing the Vickers at Rhinebeck, John. Sunday was a beautiful day, but I understand being careful with family time.

I always like looking at other peoples' rigging solutions. Your strut mountings look nice and solid.

Hi Martin, Congrats. on the award. You did an outstanding job with the Aviatik. Maybe I'll catch you at Rhinebeck next year. Looking forward to having the Vickers there.

Well, since it is still unknown as to when I will have the 1/3, WW1, William Bros. wheels I needed to come up with plan B. I will use these now unavailable wheels which were sold by BUSA at one time I think. Ron Prestin has been very kind to loan them to me. I just stuck the cover on the wheel to get the size perspective. These are 9" in diameter and have the correct cross section tire. I'll add some piano wire spokes and cover them with Solartex. I will probably paint the tires with light grey Dupli-Color, vinyl and fabric coating. I liked the way it worked on my Aviatik.

These are the wheels I'll be using until Williams Bros. finally get's their's done. I have silver soldered some additional spokes in just to make them look right with the fabric on. They are strong steel wheels and I think they were sold by BUSA at one time. I had to get bronze bushings from McMaster&Carr for them. They are the correct 9" in diameter with the correct tire cord.

Hi Doc, yeah the wife is pretty tolerant. I have to finish the wing tips and install the servos and then I'll but the fabric on. I also have to build the ailerons and elevators. I will finish the fuselage first. Probably have all the fabric on the fuselage by next month.

Finally getting the stab. done. Nothing new, just good old Solartex. The bracing wires are 175lb. stainless, 49 strand, shark leader and the ends are Mick Reeves hardware.

That is really coming together beautifully! It looks like full scale, even just sitting there on your bench.

Thanks Don, sorry about the appearance of my bench. I'll have to clear it off soon to start the elevators.

Work continues. I decided to get the tyre's done and this is how they came out. Putting on the vinyl graphics was tedious but with some patience I think they look pretty good. I used Duplicolor paint for vinyl for the tyre's and coated the letters with clear satin Poly C. Still have to do the rear side wheel covers. I dirtied up one wheel and will do the other and probably make them a little more dirty. Lots of lubricant was required due to the desert sand and the covers got stained from it.

Well, this build isn't dead but I am creeping along. Hopefully nicer and warmer weather will push me to work more. I have finished the elevators and will get back to some things I started but have not finished. The elevators are built on a 1/8" balsa sheet. The T/E is a 1/8" carbon tube. I laminated the outside and inside tips with bass wood and sanded them to shape. The ribs are balsa.

John,
your Vickers project is looking awesome. I'm watching and learning from a far.

- One quick question if you would: what font/size did you settle on for the Palmer Tyre lettering? I'm slow on my Tripehound build and would appreciate the info.

Also I would love to see you fly this in person. Will you be making Warbirds over Delaware or ODP 2013?

Not to hijack your build, but please consider the second annual Mid Atlantic Dawn Patrol (MAD Patrol). Oct 3-6 Virginia Beach VA at site of Military Aviation Museum. We had D-VII and DR-1 fly halftime show and P-51 Mustand Saturday night.
Major sponsors: Glenn Torrance Models, Balsa USA, Proctor, Ariz Models, RTL Fasteners, more prizes and about 70 pilots and growing. http://www.flytrc.com to register and details. Aprox 20 WW-I Flying replica's at the Museum to drool over.

r, Mike

Nice job on the tyre lettering - font looks good. It takes a patient and steady hand.

Thanks guy's, don't know the font size unfortunately. These were made for me by someone else. It is not the best solution since they will probably fall apart after a couple of flights. I will keep them for static only. If William Bros. ever gets his done that will be the way to go. At the rate I am building I can't say what events I'll make this year. If I had to pick one it would be Rhinebeck in September.

Hey Whit, John is no stranger to Rhinebeck bringing a Siemens Schuckert one year and a Loening another. Rest assured if the Vickers is ready every effort will be made to bring it to Rhinebeck 2013.

Coming along great, John!

On the font size question, if I recall, the letters on the graphic we worked on were about 7/16" tall. Not sure if you ended up using those or went another route. Either way, they sure look nice!
