I've read that many giant scale setups are using dual batteries. I would like to know how to set this up. Does the second battery cover both the servos & ignition. If someone has the knowledge & is willing to explain the set up, I,m sure it would help many. Thanks......... Currently I have 2 planes. The first plane I got has a battery for the ignition & another for the servos. My second Plane has one battery for everything. Both the planes are using A-123 batteries

Dual battery setups usually refer to multiple reciever batteries. Nothing more than two batteries and two switches plugged into the reciever.

Gas planes would also carry an ignition battery or have a setup similar to what you have.

I have a question, so just plug another switch and battery to an existing reciever on one of the empty ports correct? both of the batteries will be discharging at the same time right and by using two 6.6 vlt a123 does the volts going to the reciver remain at 6vlts or does this increase the voltage to the reciever any way?

nubrnchld - You can do as you say and it'll work just fine - you are effectively connecting the packs in parallel, so the voltage stays at 6.6V. Some would argue that you need to have some form of protection between each pack and the receiver - this guards against a shorted cell dragging everything down. It can be something as simple as a diode in each line, or one of the more sophisticated battery backer devices. There are others who would argue that such a device is not necessary and only serves to add extra complication and weight - the choice is yours!

Each into a switch and into a reciever port. I would argue you don't need anything fancy.

As long as the plane balances at the recommended cog. Also laterally as well it's all good. Some space tbetwren batteries (if flight power batteries) to aid heat transfer is good too.

Dave,
Just be sure to charge them separately. Check Red Scholefield's website for info about this. I use dual batteries on my Staggering and when cha4rging just do them one at a time.

G'day Mate,
As long as both batteries are the same voltage, ie, 4.8, 6, 6.6, whatever, the capacity does not matter, I often use 1700Mah 4.8, & a 1500Mah, 4.8 Nicad, together, no problems at all.
I am currently using 2 x 2000Mah, Eneloop packs, @ 6 volts & 2 x 2000Mah 4.8 volt packs, in 2 different planes of course.

Cheers

I would make the argument that pack capacity is also important, and should be matched. You don't want to have, say, a 1500 mAh for one battery and a 3000 mAh for the other, the load would be unbalanced on the batteries. I don't personally know, all my dual battery setups use identical packs.
