I've seen it before several times in Florida including for the Super Bowl so it isn't just about the Governement!

http://www.nbaa.org/ops/airspace/regional/super-bowl/

See part 6 of 7 of the NOTAM in the link - no model aircraft, etc.

Being right outside of Wash DC we get them kinda often. Its a bother but hey.. it is what it is.. Overly complaining on our part will just give us modelers a back eye IMHO.

What we need to do is elect a President who flies model planes, preferably jets. Just think of the possibilities... The White House Jet Rally at Andrews AFB, pilot's dinner in the State Dining Room, prizes include your pick of anything in the Air & Space Museum. Shui would probably get put up in the Lincoln Bedroom and would be shooting the fat in the Oval Office.

If the Prez got into the Experimental Class, he could have NASA inspect his jet beforehand. When the AMA inspector asks for the calculations to show the servos are strong enough, the Prez would hand over a few volumes of data.

Of course, the press would probably go crazy and would be checking to see if he had a turbine waiver and who issed it, what maneuvers he had to fly, did he get it with a Habu, etc.

Still, I think it would be good for the hobby.

Regards,

Jim

What he said ^^

This happens in the DOD all the time,,  We get a commander that is a hunter or golfer or racer
and now we all can join him.  If he flew RC he would have to be much more intelligent.

It was during the Bush era that they started closing airports each time the president went somewhere. Some of the visits affects more than a dozen airports. It is a mess for general aviation pilots. Tha funny thing is that if you are a AOPA member, they send you an e-mail the day prior the time and the area affected by the restriction. I always thought that that was silly, why disclose the whereabouts of Air Force 1 24 hours in advance? On the other hand, once they closed a huge chunk of airspace in MD because Cheney was house shopping...

Quite frankly, since our field is not close to any airport AF1 would use, I fly like always, all the time, everytime. Let the black vans come! Among others, I work for the DoD and have secret clearance:-) Some ordinanaces are ment to be igonored, in my humble opinion.

Now if your field is near to one of the fields this people will be using, well, maybe it would be a good idea to do as told:-)

Gerry

It just seems a little heavy handed the first time you hear about it and do they really expect every kid with an electric foamy to get the news and not fly?

I know they don't care about foamy's but where do you draw the line and since r/c modeling is not currently under the jurisdiction of the FAA (at least not required to know about NOTAMS), how can they expect everyone to get the word?

Craig

1) No
2) They dont

Those warnings are issued to give the government the legal right to give you a boatload of crap, if they are inclined to do so. It doesn't mean they are going to go after everyone flying a foamy or MSR in their backyard.

I would assume that there seems to be more and more of these due to the level of communication available now. Didn't hear of these things 10-15 years ago? Well, how good was the AMA email system back then? How was your email system then? You hear about more and more of these because you CAN hear more. That's a good thing.

I would agree....until it gets to the point where it's at right now. I feel it's being abused, straight up, and that's not a good thing. I'd bet Obama is clueless regaring the overall effects of a TFR, how it's being used, forcing the AMA to react/obey? It's more likely coming from some mid level low life bureaucrat sitting in a windowless office abusing/over stepping his/her authority with no regard how it all rolls out in the end. It would be interesting to follow one of these orders in reverse - to go back up the chain, like an audit, - to see if that isn't the case? I for one, would really enjoy hearing how the logic behind all this was assembled - and justified - as regarding it's near impossible enforcement. FWIW

Our field in Savanah, Ga. was closed down when Obama came to town to have lunch. A few years ago the police took over our field for several days as a heli staging area for the G3 (NO FLYING). I had a hobby shop and we use to fly behind it and the secret service told us we could not fly when Cheney was VP and came to town to the Mighty 8th air museum for a fund raiser. He did pass in front of your store. They had a police officer sit in the parking lot in front of our store and watch. This is just a normal security thing with all the nuts in the world.

As jroth has indicated, the NOTAMs are common for the Chicago area. Fortunately, my club has yet to fall into one of the affected areas. Closest circle we've had was 3NM away.
