ARF's SUCK A$$$$$, Who the hell likes coming to the field with the same airplane same color that everybody else has, NOT COOL AT ALL.

IF YOU CAN'T BUILD YOUR NOT A TRUE MODELER, YOUR JUST ANOTHER FLIER TO ME.

SO BY A KIT and SHOW US WHAT U GOT.

If you just starting with this hobby, Start with a kit build, It will teach you a lot about airplane construction and design, Something you should learn before learning how to fly.

I build to fly and really love flying.

When I built my first few ARFs, I didn't enjoy the process much because I didn't really understand what I should and shouldn't be paying attention to. But now that I've built about 10 ARFs I'm finding I quite enjoy the build. Now I have a number of things I do as a matter of course which makes for a much better build. I also convert any tricycle landing gear planes to be tail draggers and have done a couple of electric conversions. I quite enjoy the engineering required to change the model to suit my requirements.

Although I'm building better models now, I'm not always convinced it's worth the effort, particularly when I crash a model that is only a few months old. Sigh.

i enjoy flying more than building about 4:1... things turn very messy when im building a kit...i clean up..then a day later its a mess again

I'm bit of a sucker for a nice looking/flying plane and subsequently have too many building projects on the go at the same time, but I love it. ... and to see your creation fly...I'm busy building on some for the last 7 - 8 years whilst other the last few months. They are from large scale IC planes to small electric.

hello this is my first post ever ! i have to agree building is great although i've only done short kits around 2-3 months i dont truly understand builders who spend years on one build? my be it comes with age and patients, im not there yet? i have a few ARTF'S but you put one aganst a build and you can tell the differnce anyway it gives you a chance to change those anoying trends they on putting on ARTF'S

im in the middle of a flair pup i love these kits i did a se5a a few years back and came 3rd in a scale comp (club level) but when my patients come i'd like to tackle a 120" b-17

Tom... congrats on your first post... may there be many more.

Metalica... congrats on 3000... hope to read many more.

Super Kupfer... I've heard it said that only those who scratch build are real modelers... but when it comes down to the guys who show up at the field, they all seem a part of the modeler fraternity and they all are real guys, eh.

West Coast Flyer... I'm coming up on my 40th year as a construction framing contractor and love the kick that comes from cutting in a roof and admiring the art form of the sub structure. It is often said that to really enjoy baseball, one has to become aware of the subtleties of both the game and the players and perhaps that is true as well for framing artistry... to be aware of how much math is sometimes required of a complicated roof structure and the variety of angular cuts required of roof joinery add to the admiration.

More than ever before, I've felt a measure of the soul of each poster in this thread... it has been refreshing and much thanks to both those who contributed and those who will add their voice.

I enjoy the build more than flying them. I really enjoy talking with other builders and bounceing ideas and projects back and forth with people that can create instead of just assemble! Im haveing as much fun passing on to my grandson the skills it takes to build. Maybe he'll remember me at times in the future when he builds and repairs a model when im long gone......

I myself like to fly. I hate to build. Ive done both kit and arf and dont like either (not a fan of foamies much either). Ive gotten to like buying someone elses and flying it. And for the record, an arf is still considered building since one still has to actually assemble it to become a flying model (just has less parts to deal with).

just so everyone knows i didnt intend this to be a kit building vs arf thread. i myself have a few arfs i fly these to stay sharp but my babys are the ones i have countless hours in!! doesnt hurt as much when you plant a 40/60 size arf!

I'm building a kit right now...and CG Extra 300...got a OS 1.08 FSR laying next to it....

Love me some good kit building...keeps the mind limber. Walking into my shop, flipping the lights on, turning the radio on, cracking a cold one...makes me the happiest guy in the world...clears the mind.

No one likes building like me ( I bet everyone says that)

To me, kit and scratch building represents potential. It's sort of like having a blank canvas. An unbuilt kit can have so many possibilities with modifications, color schemes, or the joy of trying to interpret the designers' intentions. Yes, some designers are intent on frustrating us model builders, but I think the majority have their hearts in the right place. When I entered into R/C, I quickly found that kits were a dying art, so of course I jumped in feet first. Now some years later, I have a stash of out of production kits, a stash of plans, and a stash of balsa. I think I'm in heaven

Heading down to the hobby room to clean up the mess from the last build and get ready for the next. My wife wants to know where I am going to store all my planes as they just keep getting bigger. Seems like 1/3 scale is a good number now

I wonder how she would like looking up at a 1/3 plane hanging over the bed

My buddy says that my shop (2-1/2 car garage) has a lot of clutter. I say it's just a lot of parts waiting to be used. He has a basement (rare in this part of Florida) and a two car garage so he can afford to be critical, with the room he has. He even chased his wife out of the corner of the workshop when she set up a table for scrap-booking.

well i must be the lucky one as my 600hour scale joy is hanging in the dinning room dont no how i convinced the wife but i think she understud the beauty and the time spent, theres nothing better than a freshly openend kit and the smell of the wood inside not to mention the hours spent looking at a plan and seeing it jumping off the paper in 3D whilst you work out where every thing goes

I have only been into airplanes 4 years. This is my first build, a TF/GS Mustang. DA50, Keleo functional exhaust, Air operated sliding canopy, and Functional engine choke switch on dash, all panel lines and rivets, all graphics painted on, the list goes on and on. Needless to say I love the build; it took 2+ years to complete but I would do it again. In fact I have a Corsair in the works as my second build. Don.

AA5BY, You are right scratch building is the real deal when it comes to aircraft modeling/building.

Personaly I like to build kits but have done a few scratch builds, I like composite work the most........right from the plug to the end (will be my next challenge).

To me my ARF's are my bashing models & just a good way to keep the flying skills sharp.
