Phil Heller -> US41 - more power available? (4/8/2002 4:12:26 AM)

Dear Ann Marie
I appreciate your time and interest in providing answers in this column. It shows your interest is in helping modelers and not just in selling product.
I have an "old style " US41,(needle valves facing forward) in a 17lb. G-Shark. It flies it adequately but I would like a bit more power. I have a walbro 144 carb that I installed and tested with no apparent improvement. Just purchased a B&B muffler that should let it breath better, tho louder!, and I'm wondering if you have any other suggestions before I yank it out and install my Q52?

Sorry, Phil, not really. the us41 is a nice inexpensive entry level gasoline engine, but it is not a powerhouse. What are you spinning for a prop? are you loking for more vertical? more speed? or more overall power?

Sincerely,
Mrs. AnnMarie Cross

Dear AnnMarie
Thank you for your reply.
I am pleased with the user-friendliness of the US41 but would like a bit more power. I am currently swinging an 18-10 Pro Zinger at 7100RPM, which I understand is about the norm for this engine. I will install the new carb along with the B&B muffler and see if the combo does any better. Reports are 3-400 more RPM, but seeing is believing! I will keep you posted.

Installed the Walbro 144 Carb and B&B muffler. Picked up 200 RPM. I am still running 4OZ per Gallon break-in fuel, should pick up a bit more going to 50-1 fuel. total investment including carb, modifications and muffler about $100. Not really worth the effort as I can hardly tell the difference in performance - time will tell.
