Struggling a little bit here with the battery hatch and cowl mounting...

I made some light ply bulkheads to help box frame the battery hatch compartment and the hatch. This makes everything real solid. We need to decide how the hatch will be retained so I can final install everything and match sand the hatch to the fuselage joints for a good fit. What do we want to do here... latches, screws, magnets? Maybe a flop over hatch that's hinged on one side?

Cowl Mounting...

I trimmed the supplied plywood cowl mounting ring to clear the Hacker motor and attached it to the cowl using Hysol. Made three wooden stand offs that are threaded 1/4-20 on each end. I decided to put a small plywood ledge on the fuselage for the cowl to rest on. The cowl is mounted with (3) 1/4-20 nylon bolts from the inside Thus... All the cowl mounting bolts are hidden.

Pandi... What do you think about attaching the battery hatch like 262 fan hatches using a piano hinge. This way when your installing the batts, the hatch doesn't get stepped on, kicked, blown off the table etc..

DD,

With the hatch...my main concern is to get in there quickly and with little hassel. So a quick access that is attached in a manner that does not require screws etc. So the 262 engine hatch works good on mine...and I see Burley is using the same rig in the picture you showed. I am also a fan of the rare eath magnets...Let the builder use his judgement here....just make it a quick access for those Oh Sh%% moments when the Lipos need removed quickly and a hatch that does not have a lot of play in it.

The effort on the TA now is going to be the difference between this thing being the best or the worst airplane you own.

What a beautiful build!!! Don't stop now! Am enjoying the electric set up. I have a Hacker 60L with 2 ea 5000s Nanos in series that I am using as a test bed for an ESM P-39. Working good in a Funtana X, 12.5 LBS, 22" prop, Castle 120 ESC. Wallace Tharp

I've gone as far as I can with the Battery hatch until we get the piano hinges mounted. Then I can final match sand the hatch and fuse together at the same time.

Mounted the power expander on spruce rails down low for clearance. Plenty of room underneath for the air tanks. I rounded up some heavy duty orange horns for the rudder and tail wheel servos. Will get them mounted soon.

Not sure where I hook up the fiber optic ignition kill switch?

Worked out the rudder control horn geometry. Made the control horn from (2) layers of 1/16" G-10 material and installed. Rudder is ready to final sand and cover.

you route it from the canuter valve
to the ass end of the plane to keep it
away from the EF caused by the spark adjuster
in the spinner

Rudder and Tail wheel servos are installed. I reinforced the underside of the servos with spruce rails and capped the top with 1/8" aircraft ply. Also came up with some guides to to keep the cables off the cockpit floor.

Tried something different with the spinner screws... I bolted down the spinner back plate to my 6" rotary table. After a little head scratching and truing, I decided to shim the bottom of the rotary table to tilt it slightly back so the drill holes are flush with the spinner taper... Thus the screw heads will sit perfectly flat with the spinner cone. Took a lot of tinkering but by far this is the best job I've ever done with these pesky screws. Normally I burn up a half dozen drill bits and break a few taps doing this job with a hand drill.
