(2) wing skins prepared and sanded. Pandi... Do you have any idea how big this thing is?? I tried to get a picture of the wing skins joined together but nowhere in the shop could I get it all in the camera frame.

Great sheeting job. I wish mine would come out that good. What kind of glue did you use? Did you use pins or weights or what to hold the sheeting in place? Thanks, Dan.

Working out the retract geometry... Is it just me or is there no way to adjust the toe or rotation of the strut/axle on these Sierra FW190 gear?? Looks like the struts are locked in to the trunnion with rolled pins. If so I will need to nail this perfect. GRrrrr!!

How do we want to address the inner gear doors??

1. Servo powered with an electronic sequencer?
2. Air Powered with small cylinders and fancy air valve sequencer??
3. Mechanical with a bump bar for the tire??

How was the full scale TA-152 actuated? Did they work like a P-51 and close up during takeoff and landing?

well reading thru all my books, and being my German is a bit
rusty, well alot rusty, I have the following conclusion.

spring loaded doors down. when the wheels are retracted
they hit a ledge on the doors and bring the gear doors up
close.

so, that being said, you could use either of your 3 options
above. me, I would use a small air cylinder

Hi David you are correct there is no adjustment for toe in and toe out, but i found you could make small adjustments with the wheel axle,s they lock into the strut hubs and i bent the axle a small amount to get the toe in correct and as the axle does not rotate it works.
Dave.

I spent most of the weekend working out the retract geometry and possible solutions. As with any build, there's always quite a bit of head scratching when it comes to setting up the landing gear to meet the following criteria...

1. Scale angles and the position of the wheels and struts.
2. Tire fits in wing.
3. Toe-in
4. Gear door angle in relation to struts so they look right when the gear is down.

In the following posts, I will try and "Step-by-Step" show how I think though all the angles and issues.

Step-1... Establish a Baseline

We now know that the Sierra FW190 Landing Gear have no option to rotate or remove the struts. By placing the retract bodies on the spar joiner I can see that the retracts must be mounted parallel to the spar with no rearward sweep. (ie: Spitfire, 109 etc.) By putting a triangle up against the tire, I've verified that there is no Toe-in or out. The triangle touches the top and bottom of the tire. Everything is square.

Step-2... Establish amount of Toe-In

By placing an 1/8" shim under the outer edge of the retract body, I've created exactly 2 degrees of Toe-in. Notice that the gap between the tire and the triangle of approximately 1/8".

Step-3... Establish amount of forward rake.

The Sierra FW190 gear have approximately +/- 3 degrees built into them. By rotating the retract bodies up 10 degrees will give us a total of 13 degrees forward rake. I also established that the landing gear bodies must be 2-1/4" forward of the main spar to position the tire in the scale location when retracted into the wing.

Step-4... Verify Toe-in

Using a protractor, I rotated the Retracts rearward exactly 2 degrees for Toe-in.

Step-5... Gear Rails

Next I prepared the gear rails by putting a nice radius on 3/4" x 3/4" square hardwood using a router with a 1/4" radius bit.

Step-6... Mock-up

I removed just enough material from the wing ribs to clear the tire and struts for a test fit "Mock-up".

I now have good geometry that is very close to scale with the tire in the scale location and about 1/8" clearance between the tire and the inside of the top sheeting.

Now... Please excuse me while I soak my head in ice water for a few minutes.

All new blank 1/4" plywood rib doublers were were cut and laminated with 30 minute epoxy and clamped. Once cured overnight, I carefully sanded everything nice and flush using a bench/belt sander.

After studying more 3-views, pictures etc... I think I'm a little off on the tire placement. The way I see it, The tire has to clear the gun barrel just inside the break in the leading edge. The center of the wing to pivot point measurement is what it is. This will work out even better because there's more "meat" in the ribs for better tire clearance.

Not totally sure, but I think the TA-152 and D9 gear doors are slightly different. I used the David Anderson 1/5 scale TA-152 plans and scaled them up in AutoCAD to get the outline. I'm probably safe in using the David Anderson Plans for taking measurements and other details such as flaps, scoops, etc. right?

My plan with the wheel well is to make gear door templates using thin flexible plywood. After I mount the doors onto the struts, I can then use them as templates to trace the outline onto the inside of the wing skins to create the wheel well outline. Once the wheel wells are defined, I can go back and final trim the wing ribs. I really want to get this done before the ribs are glued down. It's NO fun trying to get in there with a dremel tool after the wings are built.

Thanks Rich, Right now it's seems like I'm not getting anywhere fast but once I get this wing figured out... I think I will be in great shape. There's still quite a bit of work left to do on the fuselage but other than the tail wheel install, I've got it pretty much licked. This Kit bashing stuff is not like a Top Flight kit where you can shake the parts out of the box, grab the glue and start building.

I'm reading that statement above as the cost of this build has just gone up
