Can someone please help me identify the kit manufacturer of this plane? If seems very solidly built. It has a Quadra 40 in it for power. Wing span is 72" and fuse length is 62-64". The markings on the tail say it is a weeks special. I am trying to find the mfg in case I need replacement parts. Any help greatly appreciated.

P.S. website addresses or info on how it flies also wanted!

Kevin, I believe that plane was built from a kit by ACE R/C. Before ACE bought the rights to manufactur it, it was put out by R/C Extras. As far as I know R/C Extras is out of business and ACE has gone a different direction and probably doesn't support this plane with parts. There is probably a fiberglass parts manufacturer who still supplies the cowl and wheel pants.

Mine was a super flying plane on a G62.

Thanks Ken!

Do you happen to know what scale it is? Can you possibly give me some insight to its flying characterisitics? It is a neat looking plane, but I am not sure the Q40 will power it properly.

I have the same plane, its 1/3rd scale. Miles Reed designed it and Origionally Jim Van Loo of R/C Extras kitted it. He eventually turned the kit over to ACE R/C. Mine flies very good with a G62 at 17-3/4 lbs. Its a bit short coupled and all the effects of are there. All in all they fly good with really no bad habits. Its basically a modified Pitts..Hope this helps

Kevin,

Sorry to take so long getting back to you but I've been out of town.

The Q40 will fly it fine, you just won't have the sparkling performance that a G62 will give you. The plane is very good for all of the common aerobatic maneuvers plus it does a great inverted flat spin. Being a bit short coupled, as Klotz said, on takeoff you have to slowly apply throttle and be ready to apply a little right right rudder or you will wind up with a left hook takeoff. Make sure your engine has about 2 degrees of right thrust.

One short coming in the kit design is the center section of the top wing. The way the wing is mounted on the two pylons, excessive stress is put on the top of the wing. I have a friend who's Weeks Special crashed because the wing split on the top, right above the pylons. I would suggest that you glass the top of the wing center section about 4" wide. This will mess up the nice covering job but, with a little work, you can make it look good again.

There was only one Weeks Special and, at one time, was flown to second place in the world aerobatic championships. It was built from a Pitts Special (both wings the same as the top wing on a Pitts) by Kermit Weeks and later flown in competition by Linda Meyers Morrison. It was destroyed when hurricane Andrew went through Florida. If I can find my photos of the full scale plane, I'll post one.

Klotz, thanks for the info. Would you happen to still have the manual for it or plans that it was built from? I would pay for the copies or the postage both ways to make copies of one or both items.

Big Bird if you have pictures of the full scale or yours I would appreciate it if you could tell me where I might see them. I have searched most of two days with no results.

As far as the covering is concerned, I am going to get it flight ready, fly it for the rest of this summer if I can then redo the covering over the winter.

I have a 14 year old daughter that suggested all red like the pitts but with silver stripes and black trim.

One point of concern I have is the top wing attachment. Where can I have a new wire bracket made and whats the best way of covering that area?

As soon as funds are available I would like to put a G-62 or ZDZ-60 on it to give it a bit more oomph. One of the guys that works in a LHS remembers seeing it fly last year and his thoughts were it seemed quite underowered.

He is a biplane freak and offered me a new .60 sized H9 P-51 mustang with an os 91 motor and muffler. I said thanks but no thanks, I want to fly this for a while.

Thanks for the responses guys, I still say this is one of the most helpful sites on the web period!

Kevin,

Here is a photo of the only Weeks Special. You can get a nice photo pack of this plane from this company should you decide to put a scale covering job on it.

Holy cow what a beautiful cover job... Nice work with the camera angles also.... the first two look real and life size..... the last one puts it all in perspective.. The website will be of great help to me... I like the cover job on my plane for the rest of this year, after that who knows?

Don't know if you are still following this thread but here is an up date. Oct 19'2003

I did see the Weeks Special in the Fantasy of Flight Museum in Polk City, Florida this last summer 2003. The aircraft was hanging from the rafters in one of their restoration shops. No engine and the covering was in pretty bad condition. The airframe was all there but I couldn't get close enough to tell the condition. I did ask if they were going to rebuild it and didn't get an answer.
