The last time I wrote this people thought I was being sarcastic. I cannot imagine why. I will explain a little more fully.

Both the Jett and Tettra tanks have the fuel and pressure lines coming out of the tank at the front and facing forward. To prevent the lines from being pinched against the firewall the front of the tank has to held back about an inch. This is usualy done by taping a dowel or popsicle stick to the tank and sticking out the required distance in front. Even then the lines have a pretty sharp turn to exit the side of the fuselage and then another sharp turn to the Carb and pressure nipples.

Now we get to the sarcasm. Do away with all that nonsense and install the tank backwards. I have the back of my tanks against the firewall. The lines make a gentle loop from the tank and exit the fuselage where I want them with a gentle curve. This installation puts the front of the tank just into the front of the wing saddle hole. So you can always see the state of the fuel and pressure lines. You also gain an inch space in the fuselage.

This only works with a bubble less tank.

Try it, you will like it.

Have you ever "home-made" a tank? I've heard it's not that difficult and especially with a thin-wall pressure fitting from Macs Mufflers.

If you can easily make your own, then the Sullivan slant tanks would be good candidate for saving the space also. I think their dimensions would be a problem though, unless you reformed them .... hmmmm.

Might have to try out that idea Ed. I've got to throw a Jett Standard into an F3D/30 that had a standard tank in it, so I can go flying today. The standard style tank stopper had gone on me over the winter and filled her up with raw fuel a little.

Thanks for the idea. One question though. How do you make sure nothing gets to fuel lines from the radio compartment?

I did not make a complete home made tank. I did replace a punctured tettra bladder with a baby bottle liner. It worked OK. there was a bit of a bunched up mess at the neck of the outer tank cap so I just tightend the circular clamp up tighter.

My radio stuff is a snug fit in the fuselage. I use my own "Design" clip. I use a piece of .015 mylar about 1/2 wider than the fuselage and as long as I need. I just push it into the wing hole over the rec. and battery. It sort of clips up under the saddle flange and holds the stuff all in place. It has enough strength to maintain an inverted 'U' shape. It clears the wing servo nicely.

Hmmm, While I have only been using tetra tanks for a little less than a year now and something I wish I had tryed much earlier, all the Tetras I have received has had the pressure line exit the hard case near the front and at a ninety degree angle i.e. pointing to the right side of the airplane.

Since the demise of the SWRA I have only been racing 424 Quickee and in this case the four oz Tetra fits nicely centered on the CG leaving the nose compartment empty leaving a nice straight run for the feed line to exit the through the Jett radial mount. The pressure line does require a ninety bend (with plenty of room) to run forward and out the fuse where the muffler pressure tap would be. These bends are no problem are no problem with a pressure line. The CG tank position seems to offer no feed problems and is very easy to do as well, apparently has become the norm for Quickee. Of course the advantage of zero CG change during a heat I am sure you are aware of.

Perhaps the installation you are talking about is in a 422 or similar and that I have no knowledge of but was confussed about your the description of the pressure line, possibily your tanks are an old stye.

John,

My tanks are the regular tanks. I was trying to simplify my description of the installation.

The Jett round tank was too long. I did not have much luck with the Jett CG tank. With it sitting on top of the receiver and battery it was jammed against the front wing mounting blocks. This was installed in an existing airplane. If Iwas to start from scratch I would build accordingly. I still prefer the Tettra tank. it seems to be a more convenient size and shape.
