I will have to look at the size of the tube tomorrow and let you know the size and if we offer a tube for another aiframe that you could order.

The model is only available with the stock anodized aluminum tube.

summerwind -> RE: H9 Jackal 50 Prop Jet (9/8/2010 5:07 AM)

are those aluminum tubes in the tail section as well?

bbrundle -> RE: H9 Jackal 50 Prop Jet (9/8/2010 5:18 AM)

Mike, designed the original kit version and unless I am mistaken the overall aeodynamics of the kit vs the ARF are the same, but the ARF has some slight tweaks to make it more mass production friendly. You might find this little fact interesting.

Back when the Patriot was being developed, Mike had the opportunity to race Dave Ribbe who was flying developing the then new P-51 sport from Great planes. Both were using the same power setups and you would have thought that the Patriot would have been faster, but nope THe P-51 was faster by a fair margin. Mike thinks the main reason was the fact that the Airfoil % cross section is pretty high(thick) which gives great handling at slow speeds, but you sacrifice a fair amount of speed. This is just one of the main areas that the Jackal is so fast as the wing is rather thin and yet the airfoil(designed by George Hicks) is very fogiving in slow flight resulting in a very easy to land sport model.

You do have to fly the bird down to the ground , but there are no unusual tenencies on approach.

I hope this helps

WD -> RE: H9 Jackal 50 Prop Jet (9/8/2010 5:29 AM)

Bill,

I'm thinking a Jett 90LX. Will it fit? If so, will the airframe handle the speed? Your thoughts please.

Bill

Iflyglow -> RE: H9 Jackal 50 Prop Jet (9/8/2010 5:30 AM)

Bill,
Can you consider CF tubes for the plane, since most of us guys that are flying the hopped SD's have allready done that upgrade. The main tube alone cuts down the weight by several ounces. Many planes are not even supplied with aluminum anymore, since the CF helps out so much in the weight department.
Dave

yeah the Patriot does bleed off speed quickly. i'm building a new one right now with a much thinner airfoil, high point is moved forward about 7%.
the first one landed like a trainer, so this version will need some attention.
i can see the Jackal as being very friendly just by watching the video, and it looks like it drops down just like the Sundowner.
i also see that spare parts are priced reasonbly too......another plus for H9 kits[:D]

I have had a few people ask me this.......

No idea yet.

My initial impression here stick with the Jett .56LX it fits, its fast.

The 90LX would of course be more power, but you have to get a larger fuel tank in there, and it will then be 100% about prop selection.

We saw the same thing with the sundowner. THe 90LX powered versions were not any faster than the 60LX and 56LX.

rrendon -> RE: H9 Jackal 50 Prop Jet (9/8/2010 8:09 PM)

Bill,
I have the same question, I have a Jett 90 waiting for the perfect plane. If you think that these plane can handle these engine I'll get one of sure.
Regarding the weight, I think that depending in the plane its ok to have some extra weight, I don't like to see my planes bouncing in the air with a small breeze.
That's why I don't buy the electric foam jets that are in the market, they move to much and loose the elegant flying caracteristics. ( My point of veiw)

Thanks,
Roberto

bob27s -> RE: H9 Jackal 50 Prop Jet (9/9/2010 12:34 AM)

Bill......

One heck of a good product ......... price reflects the thought put into it ! Well done, and I for one am VERY pleased to see something of this quality brought to market.

Its going to be a true head-turner at the field.

Bob

(I don't know how many of the rest of you have said to yourself "damn, if they only spent $20 more on this ARF I'd not have to rebuild half of it, spend $25 on replacement hardware, or reinforce it just to fly it properly ...." ...... Been a mantra of mine. )

Guys,

Glad to see the interest in the Jackal. Let me try and give you some more details and possibly answer some of the questions that you have posted.

The model you see me flying in the video has an all up weight of 7lbs. 9 oz. and I will tell you that at this weight the Jackal feels very nimble and light on the controls. In fact as you you can see the model slows down very nicely for landing with the use of flaps.

The flap are not an absolute necessity for landing, but do enhance this aspect of the flight profile and we all know the landing is what separates the men from the boys... If you so choose you acan fix the flaps in the up position as we have included an internal wood flap stay that will allow you to install flaps at a later date if you so choose.

I understanfd that you think the model is overpriced...well let's look at some of the features when compared so some of our more recent Hangar 9 releases in similar size.

1) The model has fully sheeted airfoiled tail surfaces
2) The wing is fully sheeted over a foam core to allow the airfoil to be as thin as we required and still maintain the strength for high speed.
3) The entire top black stripe on the fuselage is painted all the way from the cowl and onto the fin & rudder - this was done to stop the small pointed edges from peeling.
4) The top hatch is very generous and made from acrylic plastic to give better acces to all the interior gear.
5) The spiiner included with the Jackal is a CNC machined aluminumn lightedned back plate Hangar 9 spinner that we have painted white to match the model. 30.00 valus alone
6) The model uses tricycle gear which again adds complexity and cost when compared to a tail dragger
7) The inlets are fibergalss and are removable to allow the wings to pocket in to the fuselage and then the inlets slide up nice and tight to wing to keep the gaps to minumum. You will notice the inlets are designed to allow the boundary layer or air on the surface of the fuselage to pass by the inlets. This works to reduce drag and yet keeps the model looking more jet like.

Not many of you may know this when you campare this model to the Patriot, but both airplanes were designed by Mike McConville, so let's just say we incorporated some of the things that Mike thought were needed to that design.

The Jackal uses the new Robart PRS (Progressive Retract System)retracts which I have been developing with Robart for the last 18 months. These retracts are available as mechanical actuation (Two JR RT-88 servos) or Pneumatic. The reason these are called PRS is that we hope to be able to include the mechanical units with a Hangar 9 airframe and then if the modeler chooses he could purchase the air cylinder upgrade kit and convert to Pneumatic operation. These units come set up to accept Robostruts that you only need to cut the strut to length and then just slip intp the trunion and secure the set screw.

These retracts should bew availabel to next week as we have them in stock in the warehouse and the Jackal is on track to release the first part of October.

HAN501 Mechanical retracts 89.99
HAN502 Pneumatic retracts 159.99 includes complete air install kit
HAN502A Cylinder upgrade kit 95.99

I hope this information is helpful and we look forward to seeing these out there in your hands soon going faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaast.

WD -> RE: H9 Jackal 50 Prop Jet (9/9/2010 1:32 AM)

Bob,
Thanks for the info!
I have a new Jett 60LX and a new Jett 90LX. I just thought that the 90LX might be better for this plane. Probably a bad thought. I can always use the 60LX and save the 90LX for another project. What speed would you estimate with the Jett 60LX?

Bill

airraptor -> RE: H9 Jackal 50 Prop Jet (9/9/2010 3:07 AM)

i also say the 60 lx with a 9.5x7 prop the 90 is to heavy and wouldnt be that much faster if any.

robbyvaughn9 -> RE: H9 Jackal 50 Prop Jet (9/9/2010 11:14 AM)

im new to retracts so what would be the better for this plane Pneumatic are  Mechanical

Dblex -> RE: H9 Jackal 50 Prop Jet (9/9/2010 4:38 PM)

I got mine on order too...but Im worried about getting retracts for it....AND, Im at or around $750 maybe more so far.....plane,motor, pipe, retracts, ect, didtn even add the mini servos x 4 that I will have to buy for the wings...I thought it would be std servos! Woops! I sold and parted out a plane to fund it, but read the manual and found that you will only use 3 std and 2-4 mini's. DANG IT! LOL, Sold my TF Cessna to fund this.... :( but now Im second guessing it...

Please prop jet crackhead brothers...help me stay on project.....$750 can buy a heck of a plane on the used market...TEMPTATION TEMPTATION

funflyerf4 -> RE: H9 Jackal 50 Prop Jet (9/9/2010 7:26 PM)

I orderded mine today!It was eather fix my firewall in the Patriot or the Jackal, that was a no brainer.I all ready have the 60lx[:D]

robbyvaughn9 -> RE: H9 Jackal 50 Prop Jet (9/9/2010 9:28 PM)

 Im looking to put a jett 50 are 60 on this plane.. what would be the best for speed. Ive tried to contact jett with no responce. So maybe i can get some help here. Also what prop on these engines would be the best ? Are maybe someone can give me a better contact for jett..
Thanks for all replies, Robby

airraptor -> RE: H9 Jackal 50 Prop Jet (9/9/2010 9:30 PM)

just get the Jett 56

Dub is on vacation right now. Not sure how long he will be gone. I will be putting a 90LX on it. Thats what I have in stock :)

Mike06659 -> RE: H9 Jackal 50 Prop Jet (9/10/2010 6:00 AM)

I think I'm going to throw a OS 55 AX in mine. The engine is so light and powerful I think it will be a great match.

airraptor -> RE: H9 Jackal 50 Prop Jet (9/10/2010 6:41 AM)

morgon the 90 i just dont think will make it real fast. not any faster than the 56 but will have more thrust for the uplines and take offs.

the 55 with jett muffler would be great on a 10x7 prop

robbyvaughn9 -> RE: H9 Jackal 50 Prop Jet (9/10/2010 10:32 AM)

Nice engines just a little heavier than a Jett, also they like to run on 0% nitro or add head shim for nitro fuel.

snowman000 -> RE: H9 Jackal 50 Prop Jet (9/11/2010 12:59 AM)

Just pre-orded my Jackal 50, that thing looks fast, the hobbie store said November here in Canada. Thinking about jett 50 could't find any info on the jett 56. have the jett 50 in my patriot now, best engine in my fleet.

Crazy4Flight -> RE: H9 Jackal 50 Prop Jet (9/11/2010 1:37 AM)

the 56 is new, it replaces the the 60

web site may not have been updated.

contact bob27s for the real scoop

the 56 is an animal............if you try to order the 60LX, Dub will inform you that he is building you a 56. for some reason the website is not updated yet, but Bob will also give you every tip on running the new engine. great customer support i call it[:D]

my 56 is still on the breakin run with 1 gallon run thru it now, but is turning a 9x8apc at 18,400 peaked. the torque that this engine produces turns the 9x8 like it's just a toothpick. this airplane should really scream with this combo.
