That 52V1 looks great! Impressive stats. I like that alot. Plus I have never seen one over here. Would be unique to have the only one around in this area.

bob62- I appreciate your comments. Nice to know I am not the only one having problems with the Evo 60NX. I'll check with my local hobby shop about sending it to be repaired and see what happens. That being said, I think I would still like a better engine. I have a second Jackal in the box. It will not be built with the Evo 60NX.

IT FLY's!

Maidened the Jackal Saturday! The flight went pretty well with the exception of the CG as it seems to be pretty nose heavy (if I add enough weight to balance it properly there is barely enough weight to hold the nose gear on the ground). It seems to fly just fine though so that's where I'm going to leave it for now. We had been dealing with cross winds all morning and I just happen to be taxi testing it when it appeared the wind going to be mostly from the south. That was all I needed to try it out! I could hear the standard "Wow, I didn't think he was going to take off!" from the peanut gallery and fortunately a buddy came running over to help with trim and calm me down. The takeoff roll was much longer than I anticipated but that was due to the nose heavy condition. I used up most of the runway and was at full throttle when I finally pulled hard on the elevator to get it air born. I had to put in about 20 clicks of up elevator to allow me to start concentrating on other controls! It felt like it was flying at 1000mph but I can only assume it was it was hitting 70 or so, either way it gets small in a hurry! Most of the flight was at 1/2 throttle (which is about where the pipe comes on) with the gear down the entire time. After what seemed like only 4 laps my timer started beeping at me and I could not remember what I set it for so I decided it was a good idea to land. I had set up 2 flap positions so I decided to try the mid not knowing how it would react. I pulled the switch and as you would expect it ballooned up but was very manageable, I quickly trimmed it out so I wouldn't be landing while pushing forward on the controls. The first approach looked good but I came in way high and would have over run the end of the runway if I had continued, so around again. Second approach was much better but when I was about 6 feet off the ground Keith let me know I was over the weeds on the east side of the runway, oops! The Jackal was moving noticeably slow at this point but I was still able to coax it back over the runway and set it down rather gently! I think I the wheels touched somewhere around mid strip and I had to use every bit of the remainder of the runway to slow it down as it rolls very well and our runway is down hill in that direction. Fun plane for Nascar style flying, go fast and turn left!

flycolorado;
Congrat on your maiden flight. Yes the Jackal do love the ground, but I think that it come from plane that set a little nose low. I fly off of a 360' grass runway and my Jackal eat it all before it get airborne, but once the gear is up, the plane pick up speed fast. She is a blast to fly!! Have fun!!!

I got another two flights in this weekend. The only change made was to take off with mid flap position as it seemed to shorten the take off roll. I retracted the gear this time as well and the e-flight electric gear worked great! I added a significant amount of black covering to the tops of the wing as well since I have a hard time picking a white dot out of a blue sky, it helped allot. We estimated 100mph with the motor turning a 10x7@ 15500 on the ground. With only 3 thanks of fuel through the 60nx is running very well. It seems to come on the pipe at about a third throttle though so it it makes me a little nervous to try to fly it slow. Oh, did I mention this thing is very thirsty? A 5 minute flight leaves me about 1/4 tank with mostly turn and burn flying, I hope that gets better as it breaks in. I'd also like to figure a way to get smoke on it as it gets small in a hurry and it would be a nice aid.

Colorado,
The fuel flow doesn't change, make sure you have your timer set for no more than 5 mins, as I have run on fumes several times
"Always top your fuel tank up, and use all available Runway" words I've lived by....

I now have an OS 55AX to replace the fried EVO 60NX. Mounting holes appear the same. The Jet pipe fits also. So it will be a drop in replacement which will be nice. However, the recommended prop is a 12-6 which of course is too big. I would like to continue using the APC 10-7. Is anybody else using the OS 55AX? If so, what prop are you using?

I took the EVO 60NX apart to see what was wrong. The cylinder and piston are damaged and discolored. One thing that surprised me was how much rust was in the engine. I run after run oil religiously. What's up with that? Bearings felt OK but had rust on the rear bearing. I had run a little less than 3 gallons of fuel through this engine before it died.

I have a flying buddy that runs these engines. He has four of them, if it's not rust, it's bearing or a broke crank shaft

I now have 6 flights on the Jackal with the OS 55AX and 10x8 APC prop. The plane is about 10-20 mph slower than with the Evo 60NX and 10x7 APC prop. I have not leaned out the OS yet as it is still being broken in.

tlj 125 have you thought of putting a 9x8 or 9x9 on it. That may increase speed.

I haven't thought about going to a smaller diameter prop. I did try a 10x7 APC prop. The revs were higher but the plane flew slower. I was considering trying a 10x9 APC next.

I just looked on the Horizon Hobby website and it says the Jackal is not available any longer. Did they discontinue it?

Welcome me to the club. I just ordered my Jackal before they are All gone. I had my eyes on this one for a while and now that the price drop , a perfect time to buy one.
I have a Jett SJ 60 LX for power. Should be a fun and fast bird.

If anyone has retracts from a crasher or otherwise, please PM me, I'm interested in buying.

Later,

Dan

I've got a Jackal 50 in the corner since Christmas that I'm about to start building and was hoping to get a build list completed soon. Would you guys who have built one already care to share your knowledge. If you were to build one again what would you order? I hate the inevitable little part that was overlooked and results in another order and several day delay so please be thorough with every little item that may be needed. I'll probably go with the Evo motor to start out so I need prop, spinner (unless it's included) Pilot (also unless it's included) retracts, servo's, battery, Regulator, fuel etc. Will be flying off of grass if it makes a difference. All recommendations are appreciated.
