I was practicing my upside down with my avistar select. Well, I wanted to see how it glided upside down and put the throttle to idle. I glided it down pretty low, flipped it upright and when I gave it throttle, no power. I landed it with no problem. I had about 1/4 fuel left in the tank. Well, I restarted it and flew more.

Is there a resonable explanation for this, or was it just a random accurance? It seemed pretty fun and want to try it again.

maybe your clunk line is too long and not moving when you go upside down

Either your clunk is stuck or the motor was lean.

Grab your plane with no fuel in it and shake it and then turn it upside down (best with no wing on it) and make sure you hear the clunk hit the top of the fuel tank when you flip it real fast by hand.

It could also be the plug got to wet/cold from the fuel falling on the plug as the plug is on the bottom when upside down. idle bar plugs are suposed to help with this as they protect the plug some what from fuel drops getting on the element

I had the same problem with my 1st combat plane, except the engine just slowed down. There are 2 explanations I came up with.

1 Either the clunk got pushed up to the front, which I doubt in my plane.

2 When inverted the pressure part of the muffler is on the bottom, with the clunk, there it blows bubbles probably, thereforth leaning out the fuel. And slowing down your engine, and at idle your plane just quit. This is what I think happens, as far as what to do about it if this is it, I have no idea.

Combat Addict, I doubt it is the second as then rc cars with chicken hopper tanks would not run at all. The large bubbles that might be blown into the fuel would quickly rise not getting to the clunk, also the pressure would remain on the tank.
Most likely a long clunk line binding in the back or stuck forward. Have flown several avistars inverted with no problem.

I'm guessing you just found the big trick to having an inverted engine idle nicely...the mixture has to be set much more accurately than you can get away with when the engine's upright.

Thanks for the reply's. I'll check the clunk, I don't know how long/short it is since the plane is a RTF. I did fly more upside down at 1/2 throttle but I was scared to idle it. I'll try to go flying today to practice more.

Guys, I believe the technical term here is "it crapped out"!
Flying upside down with the engine at idle will do that, partly because the engine is upside down, and cools rapidly when at idle, in the air.
Also, being a trainer, I'd bet the tank was a little higher upside down than when it's right side up.
Or.....it could be that being a trainer, and being up side down, at idle, it just didn't like cheating death, so it "crapped out".

Jetts

P.S. You can land a trainer up side down, without damage, I've done it a few times with the Alpha, just to demonstrate the robustness of the typical trainer. Don't try it at home kiddies, my methods are to be observed, not practiced.

If it's flying inverted at 1/2 throttle it's not the clunk.

Most likely, the fuel just snuffed out the glow plug at idle. (As was mentioned earlier by Woodsy.)

For future reference, a remote glow igniter set up to come on below 1/3rd throttle, will prevent it.

Did the engine die while inverted or while rolling back upright? With only 1/4 tank, it's possible to "slosh" the fuel around and get a momentary air bubble up the line. At normal thottle settings this is not noticeable, but at idle, the engine is pulling less fuel, so the seems to make a bigger difference. The problem is usually seen when doing nose-down maneuvers late in the tank, but I've seen it happen inverted too.

Does the engine quit when you do the same thing with a full tank?
