Hi,

Anyone built an OV1 Mohawk either scratch or the BH ARF?   Just ordered the ARF.  I flew in them in vietnam a "few" years ago, and when I saw it available had to have it.  Was curious how they fly without functi0onal rudder(s)?  Or if anyone has converted the to functional rudders?  Any info will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob S

Hi Bob,
The OV-1 is on my list of planes to build. Keith Sparks offers a kit that is well designed:
http://parkflyerplastics.com/cart/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=24_26&products_id=151

Here is the build thread, maybe you can find out about the rudders here:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=401743

I suspect that if you email Keith, he can give you some insight about how it handles without rudder.

From the RCGroups build thread and Keith's articles, apparently the Mohawk flies OK without functional rudders.

As far as I know, a couple of people have added a center fin rudder. I've got a Keith Sparks short kit about 75% built; I went whole hog and put rudders on all the vertical fins. I'm using a torque rod to activate the center fin rudder; at the bottom end of the torque rod there will be a fitting with three arms. Two will connect via a pull-pull connection to the rudder servo, and there will be a ball link on the third arm that connects push rods to the outside rudders. Given the size of the rudders, I think 3 of them are going to end up being overkill.

les and fred

thanks for the replys,  printed out the build thread and will study that.

Fred I wish i knew keiths short kit was available before i ordered the arf.  Sure his short kit is superior to the arf.........Maybe I'll get one too    LOL.

Where are you placing the Rudder servo?  not sure how much of an option I'll have with the arf unless i tear the covering apart ( should have the arf in few days).
Also some concern about the additional tail weight, remember reading somewhere that it tends to be a little tail heavy already.

love to see some pics of your rudder set-up if you have any.

thanks,
Bob S

Bob:

Keith's kit is pretty nice, but it's not a simple build. One spends a fair amount of time building jigs to build the kit! You also really have to watch handling the fuselage and wings during the build process, as they're very fragile until the sheeting process has been completed. And then there's the joy of sanding and fitting all the ABS parts to make it really look like a Mohawk.

Pictures of the rudder set-up will have to wait... the SOB that stole my transmitters a month ago also took my digital camera. [>:]

The rudder servo will be located sideways up in the front of the plane. At this point, I've cut two mounting positions, one in front of the battery and the other in the back. Until I get everything together, I'm not sure where the battery will end up for CG purposes. If you go the route of a pull-pull system on the central fin, then you're probably only going to add a few grams of weight to the tail. A pair of nylon control horns, two maching bolts to hold the horns together, and some fishing line cables/crimp tubes weigh next to nothing. I think on the ARF the big problem you'll have is that they probably built the center fin without any provisions for a rudder pivot point. So you'll have to cut vertical slices in the covering, put a 1/4" balsa TE/LE on the fin/rudder, and then re-cover everything. Adding a rudder might end up being pretty expensive!

I think I'd try the ARF in stock form before I tried to add a rudder. I know it's sacriledge to talk about flying a twin without adequate rudder control, where you really need it is in an engine-out condition, which should be a relatively rare event using electric motors. You could also play with mixing throttle to rudder on each engine, and use differential thrust to help turn the plane.

Bob,
I have been flying the BH Models OV-1 Mohawk for almost a year now. I use the same 480 brushless motors, props, and the 30 amp ESC's from the Park Zone T-28, and a 4 cell 2300 ma LIFE (DeWalt) battery. I get 7 minute flights. The airplane is very easy to fly and looks great in the air. I used mini servos all around. I now have well over 70 flights and not one scratch. I am planning to install electric retracts when I get the time. I have no issue with the fact it has no rudders, as I fly it scale-like, and only do normal acrobatic manuevers that don't require a rudder. I am ver pleased with the airplane.

I did a product review for Model Airplane News some time ago when the ARF was first released. Nice flyer; I did add a working rudder and some cosmetic dress up things. Enjoyed the model.
