Default An MVVS 6.5 ccm DFS?

Dear Pe

I just received the engine shown below from a modeller in Prague.

He claims it is a factory issue 6.5 ccm diesel (!) that was never sold commercially.

Is this correct? Items of note:

* The carb has a butterfly instead of a rotor. It looks like a heli carb. It appears to be MVVS manufacture but I have never seen an MVVS
carb like it.

* The diesel button appears well executed. It has a nice "clicker" ratchet, like the Soviet KMD 2.5 cc diesel, for positive compression setting.

Can you assist? I particularly wish to know if this engine truly is a factory conversion.

It appears in fairly good order, although the front muffler screw hole has stripped it's thread .

The butterfly carb is an MVVS item, in use up to 2000AD. I sold the last one a couple of month ago for racing purposes.
Never heard of a 6.5cc diesel though. Then again, MVVS has many obscure items from years past. You should ask Josef Svajda about it.

Hi Derek,
saw that one on the 'Bay and let it go as 'too weird.'

It seem to be a great departure from the MVVS 10 cc with its hex head compression bolt and reeks of fan fiction too much for my liking.

But as Pe´says, prod the factory. I didn't believe that this same engine also came out with a ringed piston until I saw one either!

If its any help here, Icontacted Josef at MVVS about my custom made MVVS 40 diesel and strangely he knew how many run hours the crank would last as compared to the glow version. Now you would have to ask exactly HOW he knew that if he had no experience with a 40 diesel.
(Oh, the crank is rated at 200 hours.)

Good luck mate.

200 hours crank life run as a diesel - not bad at all I'd say.

Josef has a very rich memory.
Derek, I believe you have a collector's item on hand.

Good morning Pe

Your prompt service is much appreciated. I will restore this intrigueing engine to full serviceability, and will run it. I will advise performance in due course.

****

Interesting. It is now clear the engine is not a "one off" special. Another MVVS enthusiast has one. His diesel head button is just the same. Engine appears to be of the same vintage as mine. It wears a standard spec. R/C carb though.

The questions are: Who made these? How many were made?

The other example I refer to is shown in post No's 3472 & 3473 on this thread:

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...54975&page=232

I have Mr Svajda's email address. I do not know if he speaks english. Nevertheless, I have decided I will direct a polite enquiry to him concerning this "6.5 DFS". If I am favoured with a response, I will post his advice here. I would be delighted if it was his handiwork.

His English is not very good, German is better. he has support of good English speaking staff though.
If you do, also note the engine numbers on both mounting flanges. One flange has the year code, the other the engine number in that year. This could also be an indication of the number of diesels made. If non-marked, they probably are prototypes.

Pulled the head off the engine to look at the contra. It seems to be aluminium alloy in a brass button?

Bore looks good, no gouges or scratches and the P/L fit is still very tight.

Serial No.: Stamped under L/H lug is "120", and under R/H lug is "N".

The alloy of the CP probably is high silicon like for the pistons. The heat of the CP has no place to go except to the brass gead button, so it will always seek contact when the engine heats up.

Isn't that the same setup as the MVVS 10cc diesel head?

Pretty sure the 10 DFS factory head has a brass contra in an ali. alloy button, but memory is never certain. I will check.

Edit: Checking revealed my memory was not correct. Alloy contra in Brass, as noted by Pe. Image below.

MVVS 6.5 cc DFS "Bronze Head" on the stand.

Carburettion was sub-standard, I suspect due to fitment of a generic Chinese carburettor.

A final specification 7 mm bore MVVS carburettor will be fitted for the next test session.
