Default Nitroplanes Fantrainer

Another wonderful plane, but requiring a higher skill level is the Fantrainer...

flyboytha1 posted a longer review and build videos ( Flyboy where is that link? ).

I did not like what the directions had to say about cutting out a triangular intake scoop for the front.

I found the idea a bit "ugly".

Instead I cut an inverted triangle and installed a fiberglass air scoop made from a broken 1.20 sized plane's wheel pant...

This worked rather well and I'm pleased with how it looks and came out.

For anyone playing along.....

I find the 6S battery setup to be the best ( or "only" ) setup for this plane.

I tried pushing 100A+ @ 14.8v ( dual 4S 5000mAh packs ) but this lacked power, and overloaded the plane.

With a 6S setup as Flyboydave recommended, the plane is fast and powerful.

I'm currently flying it with dual 3S2P 4000mAh packs to get an effective 6S 4000mAh pack capacity.

I had an old Keda 36-60 11L 2200KV motor available, and this works very well... good cooling is a must though!

I used the Nitroplanes plastic 101 EDF.

It actually is closer to 94mm in size which about right for the motor I used.

The Nitroplanes 101mm Plastic EDF.

I no longer see it listed on the web site.

That HK/HC EDF is slightly too large for the Fan-Trainer, but you can adjust the clearance by removing some of the material, so you can make it fit.

What size packs are you considering?

try this one:

edf: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idproduct=4240
ab the bl from above.

i think about 6s 5000 25c
lipo: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dproduct=10357

the only thing is, that this setup could be a litte to heavy....

s3003 servos will be used

That EDF is a better match for the motor above. It would prevent the motor from overheating due to excessive draw.

However I'm a bit concerned that 6S 5000mA 25C packs would be heavy.

I first flew mine with two 5000mAh 4S packs in parallel, and found that the packs added quite a bit of weight to the plane.

That is why I stepped the batteries down to 4000mAh 6S packs instead.

Now that said the plane did fly with the two 5000mAh packs, but WOW it came in HOT HOT HOT!!!

ok, the 96mm edf with the 1900kv bl and 3s 4000 20c.
that setup should work with less than 80a.... i think

but if not, i have 2 of these planes

Running at a full 20C is pushing the packs...

You want the packs to sustain no more than 70% of their rated capacity draw to be safe...

So if you are pulling 80A off of 4000mAh packs you'll want at least 25C packs if not 30C packs.

At least that.

I would say closer to 7 or 8 lbs.

Are there any updates from anyone who has this plane? I'm planning on this being my Spring plane (after my winter 3DHS Extra 300 SHP). Is this a good plane to use as a first EDF? What are your guys' thoughts on the nitroplanes site for buying things? I've read a lot of consumer reviews on dealing with Nitroplanes and people are either extremely happy with what they get, or they swear against Nitroplanes, citing missing parts, poor quality control, and horrible customer service when needed. Like I said, Nitroplanes seems to either be loved, or hated, depending on which review you read, but it's almost pushing 50/50 either way and that's why I haven't purchased from them yet. However, I love the few videos I've seen of this EDF and was thinking of making it my first depending on what all of you have to say about it. Iappreciate any feedback anyone posts. Thanks everyone in advance!

Hmmm... First EDF?

This plane is a great flyer, however getting the power system right IMHO is a PITA.

It needs A LOT of current to be happy, and that means a lot of weight in packs.

Mine came in so heavy that I thought it would never fly. While it does fly great, there is so much power going into the ESC that I'm a bit scared to plug the batteries in.

Until you KNOW how to configure the power systems on EDF's of this size, I'd caution you to select something pre-configured.

Those new foamy Concept X EDF's are a great way to start.

What brand and model would you recommend? The Diablo looks really slow and I haven't read anything overly impressive about it. While I am looking for a trainer, I don't really want something that is just going to putter around either. I'm confident in my flying abilities, but at the same time I don't want something doing 200 mph. A lot of people talked about a Sport Jet 70 from EJF, but it's not on their website and the posts about it were from 2007 or earlier. I'd like to try to get into a little bit of EDF, but just finding a good starter is seeming to be a pain, despite tons of research.

what he wrote > Concept X EDF

you can also try the unijet from ebay >UniJet
it is a smaler FanTrainer...
all you need is a 3S 2200 20CLipo, a 35/40AESC and a receiver. 1-2 hour of work, 4 standard servos

Thanks for the links, Sundog. So you've flown the Unijet before? Isaw where you'd commented on the guy on YouTube who couldn't get his plane in the air. I was kind of surprised he couldn't get it into the air though, but at the same time it didn't sound like he gave it enough power when trying to take off. Ialso saw there was a UniJet twin listed for only $10 more? Any differences between the two that you know of? Is the twin just a two-engine version? Thanks for all of your responses.

plz gimme the link for the twin that you mean.

i think that he didn't give enough power to the edf or he did something else wrong.
the unijet ist very easy to fly. it was my first edf, the fan trainer the second (still in build) and the aquajet the thrid one.
it flies easy as the polaris did...

Here is my flying progression:
1. Firebird (Easy, nothing to it. Got bored with it quickly and gave it to my dad, who rolled it in the field after numerous crashes into the side of the house)
2. Fulk Wolfe (Good plane, just not a good jump from the Firebird. Flew it well until I got a glitch off the crappy radio that came with it and it hit the power lines and exploded into a cloud of foam)
3. Super Cub (Fun little plane. Slow, but still relaxing to fly. I think a new one will be a good Christmas gift for dad)
4. T-28 Trojan (Again, nothing to it. Flies great, glides just enough to be easy to land. Good power, just had to add some bigger wheels for the rough yard I land in.)
5. 3DHS Extra 300 SHP 47" (This is going to be my winter build and first 3D plane. Also my first actual build plane that isn't a foamy that can go together in 15 minutes. I cannot wait for this one!)
6. First EDF???

Here is the link to the twin UniJet http://cgi.ebay.com/TWM-UniJet-EP-/1...item2300703d38

my opinion:get the Unijet and than look for the next EDF
the Unijet is absultlely simple to fly, easy to build and give you much fun.
maybe as second the Concept or a bigger one like the Fantrainer....

Alright, sounds like a plan to me. Thanks for your input. The UniJet looks like it takes forever and a day to take off. Is that true? Do you need a ton of runway space to get it airborn?

That FAN Trainer is basically the World Models Unijet: See [link=http://ecsvr.com/twm/shopexd.asp?id=4780]Click me![/link]

This is MUCH smaller than the Nitroplanes Fan trainer ( which IMHO is a MUCH better plane overall ) but it has the advantage of using a far smaller ( and therefor far less expensive ) EDF setup, making the whole thing easier for a beginner to configure.

I love the Nitroplanes Fan trainer, but I would advise someone looking at getting into EDF's, to start off with an already configured foamy, and add their own RX.

The Concept-X is stable, easy to configure, inexpensive and far more fun than the Uni-Jet, especially for someone who has experience with other planes.
