So because of this post where nitro staff said that the super low wing trainer was a semi airfoil, my darling bride ordered for me for xmas, guess what, instead of a 71 inch semi,its a 69.5 flat bottom Explorer 60 L
Nitro staff, can i return this plane or can you exchange it for what i wanted?

If you go to the NP web site and look at the specs on this plane it clearly says "flat bottom" airfoil. A fact that the company rep is apparently unaware of. The specs also say it is a 71 in wing or 1800 mm which converts to 70.87 in. if the wing has dihedral it can easilly be that you are measuring the wing from tip to tip (as I would too) and they are measuring each panel and multiplying by two. #1 Stang, you are right, all the times I have looked at that page, I never noticed the "flat bottom" note, I really need to get my eyes checked, I did however measure the wing panels on the top side they are 34 1/2 inches exact, each. thaks again for pointing out my short sightedness.

I just received this model also ... something to bang around while building "real" models. The wingspan is less than advertised, and is indeed flat-bottomed. Bizarre that NP's own rep answered the question incorrectly.
The "Explorer" comes with no fuel-proofing in the engine compartment (raw exposed plywood) - I primed and painted with Lusterkote. The joint where the wing leading edge meets the fuselage also has exposed plywood. I fabricated a balsa fairing and glued it to the wing bottom to close this gap (see photo). Covering match is Monokote Sapphire Blue.
I also reinforced the wing joint with 9 oz. fiberglass, and replaced the under-sized steel wingbolts with 1/4-20 nylon and new blind nuts.
When I e-mailed NP about the correct iron temp to get rid of the hundred or so bubbles in the covering film, I was told "this problem had never appeared before" so they didn't know.

Yeah this is quite common. The measurements are crudely rounded.

I've had one or two wings turn out to be slightly bigger than stated, and a few slightly smaller.

I'm not going to worry about that .13" difference though.

Maybe it's a "semi flat bottom airfoil" ?

The edges of the wing in the picture have enough shadow, that it seems that the edges are off the surface by a bit.

In lieu of more accurate descriptions I wish there were more detailed photos on the web site.

You can pretty safely start at the main spar for the CG ...
And if yours is still new, give it a shot of clear LustreKote if you have any hope of seeing the trim in place after a half-dozen flights.

the wings are joined, so I dont  know where the spar is... Any idea on the number of inches from the leading edge?

The spar is located immediately forward of where the balsa sheeting leaves off - about 3 3/8" from LE on mine.

Cheap insurance to retain the look of the plane.

Does applying a clear coat of LusterKote effect the ability to heat shrink the covering later on if needed?

It's never been an issue with me, JW - but I'd sure like to hear from others.
After the initial wrinkle removal, I may see some mild wrinkles later in the season that come out with an iron held slightly off the covering.
Mind, don't soak the model with Lustrekote ... just a couple light coats to protect the seams.

Hi, I just want to ask you if you model was a tail heavy, I'm using a TT pro .61 engine, and I see that I will be going to add a lot of weight in the nose [].

I juggled my equipment around, pejuve, and it balanced without adding lead with an Evolution .61.
I actually had the battery aft of the servo tray ... so I was a tad nose-heavy.
The biggest recurring issue was the main landing gear - I eventually rebuilt the torsion gear hold-downs with hardwood bearers and ply reinforcement.

I had a ASP 61 on the nose. I mounted it as far forward as I could. I put the battery under the fuel tank and got it balance right on the spar.

I too had to redo the main gear mounts and replace the nose wheel with a Dubro one.

I have a second one I built with (2) aileron servos, plus it is electric powered. She does fly really well.

I'm finish the plain and I did the double servo aileron setup, I was wondering about the landing gear, I already improve the nose gear but I don't know what to do with the wings landing gears. If you could please post some pics of your to see how it looks.

I used 5/32 piano wire from the hobby shop. I just bent it to match the stock gear wire. Has been holding up nicely.

Pejuve - I snapped one main leg while I owned this plane, and it was a simple matter of bending new music wire to match the original. The bigger issue is the LG support structure within the wing. As built, mine had soft plywood bearers attached with insufficient glue. I removed these, and replaced with birch dowel drilled end-on to capture the torsion wire - braced in place with birch plywood epoxied to the spars. Then recovered the lower wing (2 rib bays) with Royal Blue Monokote (as I recall) for best color match.

This plane flies nice.  Flat bottom vs semi semetrical = Semi flat bottom is what I would call it, mid way from the spar to the leading edge is curved on the bottom side.

Landing gear = garbage.  The landing gear it shows in the directions is nothing like what comes in the kit.  The main gear are shaped like the landing gear that mount on the bottom of a high wing trainer.  Nose gear bent easily.

Bent my own gear out of 5/32 nice!

Engine mount = suposed to be for a .60 size, I don't think so, the mounts are too wide ended up rebuilding mine with carbon fiber much better and solid.

Make sure and re-glue everything you can reach,  mounted .70 four stroke as far forward as I could, aluminum spinner, battery as far forward as possable, have extra electronics and batteries as well all mounted as far forward as possable still had to add 3 oz to the nose.

Upside its very stable and works very well as my UAV test platform.
