Default CMP C-160 Transall Electric Conversion

I have the CMP C-160 Transall Camouflage 2x25 - 72" ARF Nitro Gas Radio Remote Controlled RC Cargo Plane and would like to do an electric conversion. Nitro Models shows a picture of a Electric CMPro C160 in flight at the recent Swan Hill electric fly in. I would like to know what electric equipment was used for this conversion. Or if anyone else has converted this model to electric please let me in on your experiance (equipment used, flight performance, flight time etc.).

I will be happy to do it for you. It will take me a few days to get some pix and write everything down. The biggest problem was getting the motor mounted far enough forward to have the prop clear the cowling. I worked out a very simple way and it works great.

I will post something by next week. I am new to this forum and am not sure how all of this works but I will figure it out.

To everyone who is looking for a successful electric conversion for the CMP Transal C-160 I am attaching the following data. Please feel free to contact me with questions

The following photos show the process I took to build my C-160 Transal with electric power. I was very happy with the results and the aircraft always gets great comments wherever I fly it. The sound of both engines in sync is sweet.

Here is the parts list

(2) Engines = AXI 2820/10 Gold Line part # 282010

(2) Motor Mounts = ACC3640 Motor Mount for 35mm Outrunner Order from www.maxxprod.com listed under Electric Plane Accessories page 4 of 4

(8) 6-32 x 1 ½†socket head screws to mount engine mounts to their bulk heads

(8) 6-32 Blind Nuts

(2) ESC = Castle Creations Phoenix-60 Brushless ESC

(2) Batteries E-flite 3200mAh 3S 11.1V 20C LiPo, 13AWG EC3 part # EFLB32003S

(2) APC Electric Propeller 10 x 5e

(1) 6†x 6†x ½†plywood for motor mount extensions

(1) 2†Diameter Hole Saw. Used to cut the motor mount extensions from the plywood. Note: The black wire tie around the wooden spacers simply holds the engine wires in place.

(1) Small bottle of “Gorilla Glue†used to glue the 2 round plywood pieces together and glue that to the bulkhead. Only use a small amount of glue because it expands as it dries.

(10) Small Rare earth magnets. Radio Shack carries them. They are used to hold the 2 lower engine cowlings in place

(4) 1’ diameter metal flat washers. Used with rare earth magnets.

(1) piece of ½ “ x 1†long sheet metal. Used to form the forward magnet base.

(1) roll 1†mounting tape. Used to hold the magnets.

One additional note; I suggest you re-glue and/or reinforce the forward bulkhead that the nose gear attaches to. The 1 in my kit was not glued properly and collapsed on my first landing.


I hope the attached photos will be worth a thousand words.

Good luck with your project. It is definitely worth the effort.

Hi all,
I'm starting to build the CMP Transall / electric conversion. My set up:
2 x Turnigy 25-36 1300kv
2x 9x6 apc prop
2x Turnigy Plush 40a esc
2x 35-35 motor mounts
The distance between the firewall and the tip of the nacelle is 10cm. Using the 35-36 motor mounts (5,5cm) is a perfect fit with the moto installed upside down (opposite side of the outgoing shaft).
These motors sould develop about 37 amps WOT and nearly 400 watts each, for a total of 750 watts and a ratio of 130 watts per pound. I am confident it will be enough to have scale-flying fun with this plane.

I recently found your setup and that prompted me to go ahead to get the Transall C-160. Are there any more tips or tricks that you would wish to share before I begin my build? BTW I hope to build retracts and an opening rear cargo loading door. Any ideas there?

The CMPPro 160 is a perfect candidate for a pair of Monster Power .25 electric motors, Volcano ( or other ) 60A ESC's, a separate BEC, a pair of 3800mAh 14.8v 4S LiPo's, and a pair of 12x6E or 12x7E props ( preferablly one pusher prop to permit you to set up counter rotating props! ).

Battery Eliminators on MOST ESCs are "analog", not switching mode.

That means that the higher the voltage the LESS current output they can sustain before blowing out.

That is why most analog on board BECs are rated for NO MORE than 2-3 servos at 11.1v!!!!!

By the time you up the voltage to 14.8, the on board BECs are all but worthless if not dangerous!

A few more expensive ESC's feature switching mode BECs, which can take higher voltages. But normally a premium is charged for these ESCs.

Most manufacturers forgo the BEC's altogether for the higher voltages and only provide the ESC function.

Standalone BECs are fairly cheap ( $9.00 - $18.00 ea ).

I normally will either power the servos off a NiMH pack directly or I'll use a seperate switching mode BEC.

At times I've also taken smaller LiPo packs that don't sustain the draw I want ( say that they don't produce 20C, and instead 12C when tested ), put a BEC on them, and use that to power the electronics via a BEC.

This is normally very reliable, as if either of the ESC's ( or both! ) burn up, or get shorted, I still have control of the plane.

BTW: the Advertizement lists 25A ESC's...

There is no way you are going to get adecuate power for this plane if your max draw is only 25A!!!!

The stated weight of the plane ( always OPTIMISTIC! ) is 2.6kg, so 3kg is a more realistic weight...

So 3kg = 106oz = 6.625 lbs

444 watts / 6.625 lbs = 68 watts per pound!

This thing will BARELY be able to ROG at MAX throttle....

The plane in the video took off very quickly...

So either they were overheating their ESC's ( and NOT allowing 20-25% overhead as you MUST DO! ), which will end up blowing them, or they mistated the specs in the video...

My figures above are OPTIMISTIC as 3S LiPo packs typically only produce about 10.6v under load.!

They are listed Hyperion HP 2213/16 and I have problem to find them. They are discontinue.

It's the CMP transall c-160 that's been on Nitroplanes for some years now: about 5,5 lb weight. I've got the militray camo version
Wingspan: 72 inches
Length: 53.5 inches
All built Fiberglass Fuse
Recommended engine size: 20~25-2c
26-4c
Wing Area: 581.25 in?br> Fuel Tank: 100~150cc
Propeller: 9X6 - 10X6 X 2
Spinners: 1 3/4" X 2
Wheels: 50mm or 2" X 10

I'm sorry... The plane you bought is the new MP electric version of the c-160... I bought it last week for 134 $ and I'm waiting for delivery.
For this plane I will be using 2 x Turnigy 35-36 1100kv and 2 x 40a esc with 10x7 3-blade Master Airscrew props. These motors will deliver more than 350 watts each so it will be almost ovewrpower for the EP Transall. But better a little more power than not enough.

Here is how I would configure it....

Though Nitro is out of them at the moment, they seem to frequently restock them. I purchased 2 of them and 2 of the Monster Power 32's a couple of weeks ago.

I would run two 14.8v 3850mAh LiPo packs one for each ESC.

I would install two 45A+ ESC's.

Why 45? As you increase the voltage to 14.8v, the total current capacity drops, so purchasing a 45A+ ESC assures you will not blow up the ESC.

Then prop the system to pull about 37-40 full throttle.

That will give you about 550 watts per motor.

That's 166 watts/lb so you have plenty of power and great flight times!
