The best way to break in an engine is to drive it. Accelerate up and down a track or parking lot to full, hold a bit and then decelerate. Early runs with the needle on the rich side may require you to leave the glow plug battery attached while you run the car. Be smooth so you don't eject it from turning too sharply.

The engine is broken in when you can set a good idle and the engine can accelerate up to full throttle and hold a needle setting that's rich of peak RPM.

Anyone who tells you that they just idle the engine for a few tanks and then runs their engine is giving you a recipe for a short engine life.

Just use the regular plug. In colder weather you usually go to a hotter fuel.
