Default What does the number on the muffler really mean?

I have two OS mufflers with the number 855 on them, yet the mounting holes are not in the same location and size is different. What gives? I thought the number represented a specific muffler.

For what engine? Sometimes, O.S. uses the same basic casting and changes where it mounts to suit different engines. The #855 muffler is for the .91 FSR and 1.08 FSR engines.

One muffler is on a .91FSR and other was not on an engine. It seems like the answer is that the 855 is a casting number rather than a specific muffler like I had thought.

Thanks for your prompt reply. It's refreshing to be able to get reliable answers to our questions.
