You break in the engine by driving the car. Accelerate up and down the parking lot or around the track. You want to run the engine rich, so you may need to keep the battery plugged onto the glow plug for the first few runs, until you get the engine leaned enough so that it will have an idle. DON'T just idle for a tank or two, on or off the ground. That's a sure way to guarantee a shorter engine life. The engine MUST get up to operating temps. You want the engine to be able to get to full throttle at a rich setting.

As you drive the car, lean the high-speed needle a bit at a time until the engine is getting near peak RPM at full throttle. If the engine can sustain high-speed running without the RPM sagging, you're on the rich side of peak RPM. You always want to be on the rich side of peak RPM. Once you get to this point, you can check the temp, if you wish, for a reference. Don't tune to a temp or you'll wind up ruining your engine rather quickly. The temp will change from day-to-day, as the weather changes and you adjust the needle.

The biggest factor for long engine life is lubrication. More oil in the fuel is better. Many so-called "R/C Car" fuels have very little oil. If you're not racing, use an "airplane" fuel. The engine will be a bit rougher on acceleration, but will run much better over time because of the higher oil content. If you race, then you're not really worried about engine life as long as the engine lasts a racing weekend.
