OS 160FX Crankshaft Shear
Any ideas what would cause the craftshaft to break on a OS 160FX?
Today, just flying along and the prop started freewheeling. Pulled the engine apart and the crankshaft had sheared in that hollow area between the front and rear bearing. Is this a weak spot?
There were scrape marks on backplate. Not sure if they were recent, just from the fracture, or something that has been happening for a while. I do use a starter because my fuel tank is on the airplane CG with a perry pump, and it takes some spins to prime it.

RE: OS 160FX Crankshaft Shear
Thanks for the response. I've not heard of anything regular.
I just want to be sure it is not something I am doing, since I am putting another 160FX on the plane. As noted, I do use a starter. Also, the engine is mounted inverted, but I do start it with the plane on a stand inverted (the engine is then upright) to preclude hydro-lock. I always hand-prop the engine a few turns before I hit it with the starter.
