RE: Any Koi owners? Pond owners?
mum n dads past residence had a koi pond with a waterfall and landscaped garden. Looked really pretty. If you ever have problems with big birds eating your koi, get a scarecrow from a nursery. They look like birds of prey and will keep away other birds.

My mom has a pond in central Fla, she can barely keep anything in it due to the birds and Iguanas. Then there are the frogs...... many frogs!! And algae!! and let's not mention the yard dirt. She is about ready to fill it in.

RE: Any Koi owners? Pond owners?
I built a pond at the last house I owned. It was a figure 8 shape with the larger end about 14 feet in diameter and the smaller about 8. There was a waterfall on the large end. I also had a stone bridge across the narrow section. It was a single piece of stone about 8 feet long and 2.5 feet wide. The filter system was home made and located in the hill that I made for the waterfall. The outlet of the filter was at the top of the fall.
I miss the pond and hopefully will build one again.

Make it big enough to run R/C boats in and we'll bring the beer! [8D]

RE: Any Koi owners? Pond owners?
heres a few pics. first is my exsisting pond. 1750 gallons about. pic was taken after i planted a few plants and did some more rock work. water is clean now and flawers bloomed and such.
fishies!!! they saw i was taking pictures and formed a conga line. i have 6 total koi in my pond and some misc goldfish. this pic has 5 of the fish in it.
new pond waterfall. little teaser pic. im still gettin the hole dug out and such and the land straightened up around it. next is liner and the stone work. this ponds 7500 gallons with 2 falls on this one side.
ill have more pics soon. just waiting on a few more paychecks to get the skimmer, liner, and bottom drain fitting. then ill get goin on that end of everything.

RE: Any Koi owners? Pond owners?
Was very suprised to see a thread on koi fish on this site, but hey we all have sometimes similar interests. I have a portapool tipe koi pond on a acount that my previous pond got killed by KHV. Still deciding to build my new pond but the house renovations are taking all my money.

May sound a stupid question but what happens in winter when the pond freezes?
I have a lake out front but wanted to do a medium sized pond in front of the house. Just curious what happens to the fish when the pond freezes or if added measures are taken to keep it flowing.
I guess the fact that I am asking here indicates I have not done much searching online yet or broken ground - but it is a spring project - just getting my ducks in a row
Thanks guys. I like seeing all you have done. I like the bridge - I might have to add one myself

I have over wintered the fish for 4 years now with no problems. What you do is install a floating pond de-icer that will keep just a hole open for gas exchange. You stop feeding them when the water temp gets below 40 deg. and they pretty much go dormant until spring.
oh ya the pond is about 4' deep so it never freeze's completely.

JAW a cheap way to get into it is to use rubber roofing foor the liner (it's the same stuff 45 mil thick) just whatever you do don't use a pool liner, you will kill anthing you put in it.

I was reading an air pump will also help keeping a hole open.
The lake out front probably does not get more than 10" of ice over it - Could be more but I dont walk on frozen ponds to find out (one of those "just not a good idea" things for me)
I have done a few ponds but all in subtropical climates. I appreciate the tips. I am not sure what I will end up doing for a membrane. So many rocks around here that it will need to be reasonably durable.

RE: Any Koi owners? Pond owners?
Thats a nice setup Don.
I have the pond (around 8 acres) and waterfall all set for RC use in the front yard (My property line includes the waterfall - though it will be a big ask of an rc jet boat when running deep). (The pond is trout stocked up river by the state which is nice of them).
Next consideration with the fish pond is the hunderds and hundreds of little frogs we have had here the past few months. They are everywhere through the lawn. I am sure they would love a fish pond [sm=71_71.gif]. (I guess if I dont want the snakes around then I will have to put up with the frogs - though the lawn mower eats them quicker than any snake )
