Default Drilling and tapping machine threads (M3 for example)

Hiya, nooby hardware question here, but for all my searching, I can't find an easy and straightforward answer, so maybe one of you guys can help me.

I want to drill and tap an M3 standard thread (as found in almost all our RCs) into a hardened alloy 17mm hex. I can easily find an M3 machine tap, my question is what drill bit should I use prior to the tapping? 2.5mm?

My chart shows

3mmx.5 uses #39 drill
3mmx.6 uses 3/32 drill

It's not going to be easy I don't imagine. 2.5 mm is probably just fine.

Yeh, to be honest, I don't need it to have the full 60% or more thread contact, it won't be load bearing (at least not in the push/pull direction, load on the screw will be from the side). Thanks.
