iv always hated those trikes. the ones with tube frames and vw engines are usually much better (like posted above). some of them are actually kind of cool. but the ones that are just the back end of a bug or ghia with a motorcycle front end, always thought they were an ugly unless waste of a good car.

Yeah that's the go.

Is/was there a kit to buy to make that conversion or do people just build their own?

there may have been a kit at some point.  there seemed to be a kit to build just about everything with vw parts at some point in history.  but all the trikes iv ever see in person were one off's that somebody built from scratch (some built better than others)

Yep.
Amazing cars.

waste of a good car
Yeah yeah people always say that.

At the end of the day it's up to each individual to do whatever they want with their car.
Some of those half-bug-half-chopper-creations may have been made from a car that was wrecked at the front, who knows.
If the person who built what is labelled an "abortion" or "abomintaion" by others, is happy with what he/she built that's all that matters.
Purists are always gonna complain, and if it was up to them everyone would drive around in cars restored to factory stock with skinny wheels and high suspension.

According to the intrawebz, "When production ceased in July 2003 in Mexico, over 22 million Beetles had been made" so there's plenty to go around.

I still prefer those half bug choppers over this hideous thing.... [:'(]

the mexican built cars aren't legal for sale in the US because of safety and emission laws. i think there's a few rolling around in states with lax registration and emission standards. where im at in california is not one of those places. come to think of it i don't think iv ever seen a mexican beetle in person. the only thing you can do with them is build a baja bug and green tag it so its for off road use only (it would be like owning a sand rail). i don't even think you can use the floor pan (chassis) for use in building kit cars.
and if you were part of the vw scene and were looking for your next project you would see that amount of cars and quality of available cars are diminishing but the price for the cars are going up. there are no longer enough to go around.

it's only ugly cause they mixed 2 years into one car. had they stuck with ether the 57 theme front end or the 59 theme rear end throughout the whole car it probably wouldn't look bad. i hate to admit it, but i kinda like the look of the front end

It looks like a cartoon car.
They've taken pieces from 3 big cars, chopped them up and stuck them together making a small(ish) car with a windscreen in the middle.
Yuck.

weird window placement and angle or not, 57 through out and id drive it.  it would still be better looking than anything else on the road today

then again i remember drooling over the Chezoom back in the day.

I live in a small town (about 45K) and saw a car yesterday very similar to a Chezoom, a gold and green cabriolet-looking. Was very well done and unusual for this area.

All I can say is it looked like a convertible Chezoom, highly modded and sleek. Green metallic with gold trim on the hood and the fin trim, but the gold looked like leopard print. I was at a light, it went by from right-to-left. I was in the right-hand lane, and was tempted to do a left pull-out across all lanes ala the '68 Charger at the start of the Bullitt chase.

As for the Vettes above, I'm a purist. Those are okay if it saved them from the scrapyard.  My late brother had a nice '74 with sidepipes. A fun ride but if there were any turns involved, my 2-liter '73 Capri would eat him up. He couldn't hang the tail out tho. [8D]

Oh, the car was def a '57. I'm going to look at the cruises locally to try and get a photo and chat with the owner. I don't really fit in with my '95 Volvo wagon tho!

Is the new 2012 VW beetle considered a bug? If so, it's quite ugly. It looks like a beetle hatch lol

you wouldn't have to save those from the scrapyard. they are new modern vettes customized to look like old vettes.
and im not a vette fan. 67 and earlier are cool, but everything after that i don't like.

hopefully you find a pic that chevy

depends on who you ask.
air cooled guys - no it's not. its an ugly water pumping imposter
hippies/hipsters/beatniks - probably
women and gays - yes

and yes it is hideous, they took a chick car and tried to give it a more retro look so men would drive it. they failed. all they've got know is an ugly chick car. the high school cheerleader aint going to drive that. there goes half your market right there. the around 40 soccer mom might though. cause you know, she had one in college.and is know having a mid life crisis. huh, it's a female corevette! lol

As a good friend used to say, "After '67, they're just plastic Chevrolets."

the around 40 soccer mom might though. cause you know, she had one in college. and is know having a mid life crisis
That would explain why my ex has one...

Can't say I'm a fan of this super low look with the wheels almost sticking up over the roof.
Doesn't even go fast.

Beetles just don't make good hot/rat rods. []

Nah, don't like it.
Yucky colour (might look different in real life), don't like the soft top, and it's still a volksrod.
[:'(]

Hot rods are supposed to have a big chrome grille at the front.
And all these Volksrods just look like a car without fenders with mismatched wheels.
Which is what they are I suppose....

I still say no to Volksrods.
Not for any "purist" reasons, just cause they look wrong.
