PC went "Pop"
I just installed yesterday another 6970 into my computer along with an LED kit. I was playing BF3 today for about an hour and everything seemed to be running smoothly. Got off of BF3 and was just browsing the web. Then all of a sudden my PC shuts down, I hear a loud POP sound come from it, a burning smell, and then my PC turned on again. I think it was my Power Supply. It's a Corsair HX750. I did a lot of reading saying that this should be OK for crossfire but I am not sure. I'll probably have to get ahold of Corsair tomorrow.
I am not sure its the PSU but I am almost positive. It is not dead though since the PC started back up again and it did not BSOD.
Asus p8p67 evo
Corsair 8gb (1600mhz)
Crossfire xfx 6970
Corsair HX750 PSU
i5-2500k @ 4.5ghz at 1.3v
WD 1TB Caviar Black
NZXT Phantom
NZXT LED kit
Corsair H60 Cooler

RE: PC went
If you don't see evidence on the motherboard of a failure then it is probably inside the power supply. Judging by the pop and how it seems unaffected you blew a capacitor which is common if you have a non solid state capacitor that's past its prime.

Yeah..... Im not gona spend 180 on one of those! I looked into the PSU with a light, i cant open it cause I'll void my warranty. I didnt see any blow capacitors but my Mom said she could smell something burnt. I will call corsair tomorrow. And probably just order the HX850 off of Amazon, then sell my new HX750 when I get it back.

RE: PC went
If it has warranty and served you well for years then I would RMA it. If it's only a few months old and this happened I'd just not take the chances and buy another brand. It could do some real damage next time.

RE: PC went
I'd bank on it being the PSU. I used to repair a TON of PC's that blew PSU's at the one place I worked, and that was always how they would act.
My last PSU served me well up till I installed 1 additional fan then went BOOM. I ended up throwing a 650 watt supply in so I'd not have to worry about blowing a PSU when I added anything else
For the record when I blew it I was running a dual core AMD, 9 Hard drives, a DVD burner, 9 case fans, forgot the gfx card((but it pulled a lot) looking back I'm shocked the 450W PSU I had lasted me as long as it did(ran over 2 years). Oddly when I threw in a 500 watt it blew after an hours so I returned it as defective, and got my current 650W in its stead.

Jumping RC cars 30' in the air and something break when landed is not bad luck.. it is just physics..
Just messing around, yo... good luck finding out what's the issue... !

RE: PC went
One time when I plugged in an old PC and didn't know the power was switched on and same pop and smoke. Not good. My current PC is an Asus G72GX.. good computer but has the heat issues, white screen, flicker.. etc.. luckily gaming is a waste of time anyway but it would be nice to be able to use the hundreds I've spent on games..

No I don't LB.
Foxy wouldnt it have BSOD when it turned itself back on again if it was the Mobo?

I agree it's probably a blown cap. Which is worse than it sounds, as that cap may be responsible for buffering power spikes to critical motherboard components. Get er fixed quick, and avoid using it until you've found out what the problem is.
TDN, gaming is a waste of time!??!?! What??!? What is this sacrilege! You're BANNED!!
lol, j/k.

RE: PC went
Probably a Cap in the PSU most likely, or video card. The caps are generally used in th the "filtering" aspect in converting AC to DC. The affect may not be noticeable, except for some pulsating DC as opposed to straight DC. A good visual of the Mobo, Video Card and PSU circuitry may reveal something...
