Default What will get better MPG?

So me and my dad are planning on trading vehicles here in a little while. In my family, there has been a huge battle over which vehicles gets better gas mileage. The battle is who would get better gas mileage/more time between fuel ups at 65 mph on the highway...

His car:
2006 Pontiac Grand Prix
3.8 V6 with K&N filter, Bosch plugs and wires, 140k miles
Oil changed every 3000 miles, all maintanence done on time, every time.
He says he averages 34mpg @ 55mph with cruise control
I think his gas tank is around 16 gallons.

My car:
2001 Hyundai Acent
1.6L I4 DOHC 16v, K&N filter, Bosch Plugs, 124k miles
Oil changed every 3000 miles, all maintainence done on time, every time.
I will be lucky to get 30mpg since it does not have cruice control
My tank is about 10 gallons.

So at 65 mph, regular highway driving, Pontiac on cruise locked in at 65, and Hyundai trying to keep at 65 without cruise, who would get better mileage?

You guys must really like K&N filters...

There's only one way to find out.. actually test it out and report back to us on the results!

LOL well in all ouf our cars, we have seen a difference in MPG. The only thing we don;t have them in are the lawnmowers and weed whackers ha!. That would be quite the test. And a waste of gas lol, just to see who gets better mpg. I can tell you, I drive to work Monday-Friday, and have to fill up every Thursday. He drives twice the distance I do, and fills up every 7 or 8 days.

Cruise control does not automatically mean better fuel economy.
If you have a road with rises and dips the driver controlling the throttle has the ability to get better economy (than cruise) just by reading the road.

At the point you have to dump more fuel to keep at the same speed, the mileage will decrease with every hill, going up or down.

When done manually, you can speed up without using much more gas to build momentum during down hill, and ease up throttle to prevent kick down during uphill, etc, etc. I think that's what Anthoop meant.. and I agree w/ that..

Just keep in mind that time between fill-ups has nothing to do with MPG when comparing cars with 2 different sized tanks. I mean, one could have a 10 MPG pickup with a 60 gallon tank, and have longer between fill-ups than a 30 MPG car with a 10 gallon tank.

I've seen that before when folks talk about their mileage, and really just talk about time between fill-ups - that has nothing to do with it. MPG is miles per gallon, not miles between fillups. Just do the math and compare.

And my $$ is on the Grand Prix, since he already claims 34 MPG and you claim less than 30 MPG (or are pessimistic at least).

Specs state the Pontiac to get 28 highway, and the Hyundai to get 32 highway. Now, what are the conditions/road conditions they are driving in? I keep my RPMs below 3k 100% of the time, and only do 65mph. I would be lucky to get 32mpg. If the Pontiac can get as good or better, then there is nothing to lose. Four doors, bigger car and trunk, V6 power when you need it, air conditioning (unlike my Hyundai), much more comfortable and better in snow.

Almost. It does about 33mph highway.

Also, the tank is 18 gal., not 16. The V6 power is great, and you can get almost 250hp if you add the optional supercharger. (The GTP has the supercharger) And cruise is a gas saver as when approaching an incline, the car accelerates slower, then the human foot usually does. So that way you don't dump more gas in than you have to, and then when cruisng down the hill, you can turn the cruise control off, and glide.

Yes, but such small real world differences in fuel mileage are really going to matter only based on how YOU drive it, and how MUCH you drive it. If you baby-step the Hyundai, and the Pontiac is a better all-around car, with a higher MPG, then the choice is very easy.

And not just looking at one sources MPG ratings, like, what the sticker in the cars window says. Many groups and magazines review vehicles and take their own readings while mimicking real-world driving conditions as closely as they can. Find 3 reviews for each, take the average of all three stated MPG's, and compare

Air conditioning would be nice for me as well as the kids. I mean the good thing here is, me and my dad would trade car for car. My mom wants the Hyundai since she drives literally 5 miles to and from work, and it would be better on gas than the ram 2500 hemi. so I think regardless of the mileage, whether it's 1-3mpg lower or what, who cares! The Pontiac is an all around better car.

With the supercharger, yes! It'll outrun a Camaro, Mustang or Corvette Easy! As for a Mercedes, peice of cake!

Well, the specs are obvious, V6 vs a 4cyl, Pontiac Gran Prix is rated 18/28 (*16 gallons), and the Hyundai Accent is 28/36(*10 gallons).

Better mpg is the smaller car.

In city driving it comes about the same, 288 miles vs 280 miles per fill up.
In highway driving the Pontiac can travel 448 miles vs 360 miles for the Hyundai per fill up.

I can tell you from experience, the Hyundai does not get 36 highway, even going downhill with the wind at your back. Real life mileage on highway is about 32 highway.5 speed gets better mpg.

It's a key factor since I drive 60 miles a day to work. The only thing the Grand Prix would cost me is my 12 year old Hyundai.

Ha! Now that's funny. I think the non-supercharged V6 would give the Benz a run for it's money, let a lone the SC version.I've drivenboth SC and stock Pontiac3.8 liter V6GrandPrixbefore, andthey havesome pretty good get up and go.

How much power is the 3.8 anyway? I driven one and it didn't seem that great for a heavyish car. Probably just due to the cars I am used to. My friends supercharged one was more reasonable though that one was nice after pulley mods and a few other things to increase boost.
