Microsoft is a greedy company.

i heard rumors about having to pay to play online. You better not have to if you are playing on a server YOU yourself created.

to answer you other question from above all of those applications fun fine under vista (it may be a bit slower) the thing with vista is like xp it likes alot of ram I only have 1 gig currently and I am fine with the performance. (although I am getting 2 gigs)
I would suggest upgrading to vista over getting a theme pack, I have done that before and windows blinds he program which skins windows gives horrible performance I found (lot slower then vista for sure)
The idea of duel booting linux now. What that does is allows your computer to boot into one of the operating systems or another when you turn on your computer, they are not running at the same time. This means it will only take up hard drive space.
I would not recommend it to someone who is not comfortable with computers as far as repartitioning the hard drive and things like that. Depending on your interest I would recomend doing lots of research before hand. It is much different then windows and you will have to find replacement programs for the ones you currently use (most of them). The advantage is it is free and open source meaning its community rather then company driven.
The other option is to leave it as is and buy a Macintosh (yeah I have everything in my house lol)
If you have any specific questions you can send me a pm.

The theme pack doesn't skin XP, it replaces the file that Windows uses to validate visual styles to allow 3rd party visual styles to be run. It uses the same amount of power as the XP Blue style does, as there isn't an extra process running.
