Default EDGE 540 V3

THE V3 EDGE 540 PROFILE IS THE MOST AWSOME PLANE OUT THEIR TO CUT UP WITH. I HAVE A OS 55AX WITH A ULTRATHRUST MUFFLER. THIS PLANE WILL DO ANYTHING. FLATSPINS ARE AWSOME. IF YOU GET THIS PLANE YOU WILL LOVE IT.

Default RE: EDGE 540 V3

I just finished building a 47" Edge 540P kit from OMP. It went together well and is designed well. It is covered with Ultra-cote with all hinge gaps being sealed. I am using a tried and true Saito 82 with Coolpower 20% Propattern fuel and am going to try a 12-10 APC prop. Servos are JR DS821 for all control surfaces and a mini for the trottle. The radio is a JR 10X TX and a R600 FM receiver with a 2200Mah NiM pack. I have not flown it yet because I live in Mansfield, Ohio and the weather has been a bit crappy. This will be my 5th OMP plane. I started with an 80" Edge with a saito 180. The Saito beat the airplane to death but I still flew it for 2 seasons. I then built a V1 47" Edge 540P followed by a 47" YAK. I flew these airplanes like I hated them. I beat them to death learning aerobatics 6 feet off of the ground. On many occations I ran out of "ideas and altitude" all at the same time but I kept them together and flying. I actually killed them both in flight doing snap rolls. You know you are stressing an airframe when the wing breaks into 3 pieces during flight. I loved those 2 airplanes.
Now the bad..I bought and built a Boxxer. That airplane was horrible. It would snap out of a loop, land fine once then fall out of the sky the very next flight, and generally do weird stuff. I contacted OMP and they basically blew me off. They told me I built it wrong etc. I have been building for 32 years and it is not likely I built 1 plane out of 50 wrong. I guess the fact that the kit is no longer available says alot about my experiences. At that point I swore off of OMP and the rest of the flying club did the same.
My buddy is flying a Tribute from Horizon Hobby and it flies great. It is constructed very flimsy but it does fly well. I decided he was not going to have all the fun so I am giving OMP another chance. I knew I could build a plane and it would be better constructed than an ARF so the V3 Edge 540P gets a chance. When I get a chance to fly the plane I will post and update.

That 12x10 prop may not be ideal in this situation. Try something in the 14x4 or 14x6 range.

Nice lookng plane. You are the first person I have heard of that has had trouble with the Boxxer? I honestly have heard nothing but good about the kit and the ARF. Wierd.

The Saito manual suggests that prop for aerobatics so I thought I would try it. I have been using 14-4W and a 14-6 APC props and will carry them with me to the field for test flights. I will update you when I get a chance to fly.

I understand that many people liked the boxxer. I let many of the club members fly that plane including a guy that consistantly places 2nd or 3rd at Top Gun and the Nats in the scale competition and they all said it was terrible. Sorry but that was my experience with a Boxxer.

JLmeyers,

I'm sorry you feel like you were blown off but at this moment off the top of my head I do not recall any conversations with you. I'm sure we talked but I talk to so many I'm sure I just can't remember at this time. The Boxxer is pretty well established and very popular among 100s of ProBros. It was even in production by Jeremy before I took it on as a kit production. The kit is not an easy build but is typical of biplanes. The plane is an advanced 3D flyer and not for beginners. All this is fairly well known. I don't think anyone would question your building or flying skills, but I would certainly not put the Boxxer in the hands of a scale competition pilot and expect the same report as say someone with expert funfly skills. Regardless the Boxxer is still in production but only as an ARF right now. I'm sorry the Boxxer was not your cup of tea but I'm glad you are giving OMP another chance. Please let me know if you have any issues with the new Edge V3.

The Boxxer conversation took place right after the release of the kit a few years ago. When I got blown off I left OMP kits behind just as I promised at the time. It was not my first bi-plane build and I felt i was slighted. I have been fun flying for a lot of years. I am the club trainer and test pilot so I feel I am qualified to make a judgement on the airplane. It is in the past now so I will move on. Hopefully I will not experience that kind of customer service in the future.

Fly on.

I actually found a couple pictures of the old Boxer. This was it's only flying time. There still hasn't been good enough weather to try the new Edge.

Nope, built and covered by me. No ARF was available at the time. I did look nice but the flying was the problem.

I know it is a kit, just similar color scheme. The ARF has a much different scheme to it. I think the video Jeremy did with the dualing Boxxers has one with that scheme in it.

It flies GREAT. Flat spins are a cinch and knife edge loops are so quick they shock you. I like it. Next project is a 50cc gas plane, any suggestions?

Well there's the famous OMP Hybrid. Lots of good build threads on the Hybrid right here.

That actually looks like one of Jeremy Chinn's original Boxxer.
Actually the original one was yellow. The one like the picture shown was the beta.

Also, Jeremy's Boxxer evolved once even before it was an ARF. The new wing platform in the V2 was a distinct improvement. I've been lucky enough to fly the V1 kit, V2 kit, and the ARF. Each generation has improved over the last. But even with that in mind, Jeremy's red/white/blue V1 Boxxer would have to be pushed pretty hard to get it to snap out.

And I'll echo on the prop. a 12x10 is in no way suited to your engine and airframe combo for 3D. A 13x6 or 14x4 would be vastly superior. You will eventually pick a favorite. An 82 on 20% Nitro would be pretty good on the 13x6 or 14x4. If you went to 30%, you could spin a 15x4 with good authority. I've been experimenting with the Pro Zinger 14x5 on 30% juice, and like it.

Scale pilots testing profiles.

The 12-10 idea came from the Saito manual. I was open minded enough to at least try it before I bashed it or anyones knowledge or experience. Guess I'm just funny that way. I have actually been flying either a 14-6 or a 14-4W with good results on 30% nitro. The 12-10 did not have enough pull.

I'll check out the Hybrid Mike, thanks.
