Default New Copperhead Extra Woody is Here!

Folks,

We have a small number (only 19) of "BETA" ARFs of the new Copperhead Aviation Extra Woody available on first come first served basis. This is a 60-90 size profile built with totally new and advanced construction methods. The ARFs are covered in real Ultracoat and include features like two-piece wing, twin carbon fiber beam fuse, carbon fiber wing tube, T-6 6061 landing gear, and concealed servos under hatches. The ARFs include pretty much all the hardware except pushrods and fuel tank. Again, these are "Beta" ARFs so we are offereing them at a seriously reduced price and would like to gather feedback from noteworthy builders and pilots. Check them out at:

Mike,

Could you give any info on what changes were made from the few prototypes that flew earlier this year?

Waiting for Tim to jump in with the details. From what I recall the entire wing is new...more surface area and bigger ailerons. Also bigger rudder. All this enhances stability but let Tim clarify for us.

Thanks for the info, Mike. Is it still expected to come in around 5.5#? I have a few engine choices just sitting around the shop and could play with a few.

Berwyn Bill,

We added wing area and increased the size of the rudder and ailerons. We also made some minor changes to the fuse. Depending on the size of your engine, 5.5 pounds should be right in there.

Cheers,

Tim

Yes 5.5 lbs seems to be the average weight of the Woody.

Wow, Mike that's impressive for a guy your size... [sm=what_smile.gif] [8D]

I went for one. I'll go with the .82 (30% and a 15x4 prop, the set-up from my old Bears Yak, a stump-puller), keep the components light and go CF on the pushrods. I'll see if I can trim it a bit. My Chinn Yak was at 5#s there at the end but the power was ridiculous. Can't wait to try it! A cold winter Chicago maiden flight. Gotta find my gloves...

I've seen Mike....He's not that big. In fact, he is kind of wimpy.

I've also seen the plane up close and personal. It's a beauty that includes spinner, wheels and real nice alum landing gear that has been anodized. If I was not so broke I'd buy one.

Dave.

What Mike lacks in height he makes up for in width!

Agreed. At times, I lose him amongst his many carcasses of old Opel GT's. Those cars are much like him, short and stocky with a bulge in the hood.

I've been looking for a new home for my old reliable Saito 82. I've got an Extra Stiffie that I'm very happy with, so a matching Extra woodie would be cool. The saito was in a H9 twist and performed very well in that setup, and it looks like the woodie would be close to the same weight? The woodie better fly better than the twist!

Ah......YES!!

I think the 82 would make a good combo for the Woody.

Opel GTs!!! My first car was a Kadet. I was excited for about a minute when my dad told me he had found an Opel for me. Then I saw the Kadet and realized it wasn't the GT I was hoping it would be. [&o]

I've got a Woody ordered. Saito 82 on 30%, CF for the pushrods and gonna try to use the lightest components I've got around. Looking forward to it!

So Dave, why are you focussing on my bulge in the hood? How's this for short and stocky?

Hey I actually sold one last Saturday! Here's my self built convertible; photo taken while stationed out in sunny Edwards AFB, CA.

Ok Tim, Placed the order, I've got plenty of 30% on hand for the Saito 82. Looking forward to some winter flying, its nice to have the field to yourself.

Received the Big Brown Box yesterday!

Plane is a beauty, the hardware looks actually usable for a change, even includes a "sulivan" style tail wheel bracket instead of the usual garbage. This should be a fun one. The way the underside of the plane is covered in clear is really neat. Covering looks really nice, maybe a couple of minutes with a heat gun will be required on the fuse, and the wings are perfect. Fuse is perfectly straight, wings are light, yet feel very stiff. Plane has huge control surfaces, got to love that huge rudder.

The plane was delivered in 2 business days. Packing was good, it was double boxed and well taped and bagged, couldnt ask for better, yet still had a bit of damage to some of the wing ribs, looks like UPS sat on the box. Was able to get in there with some CA on a stick and get it back together. Having clear covering on the wing was a definate advantage here, made it easy to spot the damage and to see what I was doing for the repair. I'm back in business.

I've got just a couple of assembly questions for now:

How is the wing attached, I'd like to make the wing removable if possible - I'm looking at the nylon bolt with a wingnut in the package?

In the past when I've had servos under a hatch, the servos were mounted to the hatch? Is that the plan, even for the elevator and rudder - seems like a big hatch with only 4 small mounting screws holding in 2 servo's?

The carbon fiber control horns are nice looking, do I just epoxy them into a slit cut into the mounting block?

A guess at an opening CG would be helpful.

Didn't notice the anti rotation pin in the box, will have to look again.

Thanks for the report. We are trying to get a basic manual online for folks to download but this being a "beta" arf we were a little short on details. We tried to leave the hardware in there that was usable for this plane. I think the only thing needed is a fuel tank and pushrod linkages.

The wing is attached using the cf wing tube, anti-rotation pins in the leading and trailing edges and the center wing bolt. This is the same style as I designed for the Fusions. The anti-rotation pins should be short cf rods but if they are not there use 1/4" hardwood dowels glued into the fuse so they extend about 1/2" each side of the fuse.

On the CF control horns, sand the glue surface slightly to roughen up the gloss finish and then cut a small slot in the control surface as needed. Make sure you don't cut a wide slot....you want the control horn to fit tight. Also make sure you align the control horn clevis hole in line with the hing line of the surface. Glue in with thick CA and then wick a little thin CA around the horn to be sure. DO NOT use kicker as this makes the CA brittle.

I'll go measure our CG and post soon.
