    So, i guess nothing is better to start this off than pictures! I set up my fuselage a little different, but the cg is good and so far nothing fell from the fuselage. What do you thing of my setup. Right now my battery is a 2s 1000mah (apparently 40c).

    Nice setup! I use a 2100 mah 11.1v 30c turnigy with a Turnigy C2409-1200 brushless outrunner on my stock setup. You may want to go to a little bigger battery, with my 2100 I can stay up for about an hour if I keep it to 1/2 throttle or so. If I get pretty crazy and want to loop and fly fast, I get about a half hour or so. Also I really like the way the 1047 prop flys. In my pic you can see the orange prop, its a 9x5 andIm not to satisfied. Upgraded to a bit thicker landing gear wire, as well as 2 and 1/4" (I think) wheels. Does really wellin somewhat taller grass. I will suggestradicalR/C's slow stick mods. Ialso have a Flat wing aileron tricycle gear setup on ablue slow stick,(a bunch of radical parts on that one)howeverit is awaiting repair after a unplanned collision with a metal light pole! (Shatteedthe fuse all the way up to the front wing mount, motor stayed surprisingly straight, haha) On the red one I managed to haul up a two pound load of rocks in a tin can, and it still flew great slow!

    I still have yet to do a full flight thanks to winter. I was able to get a few 10 second mini flights in my back yard which has a decent amount of space. I just flew straight back and forth.

    Is this an appropriate plane for a RANK newbie? I have a cousin who has never flown an RC plane before, has no sim and has never even driven an RC car for more than a couple of minutes. He had a co-worker build him this Slow Stick plane and he is literally afraid to fly it. What are his chances? I know, you will recommend him joining a club, etc., etc., etc. I doubt he will do that either. We basically got in the hobby together. I have a Hobbyzone Firebird Stratos, HZ Super Cub, and a HZ Champ that I have flown now for a couple of months with only 1 crash between them, maidening the FB Stratos. I can land all of them no problem now.

    When he comes with me to fly my planes, I know he is itching to fly his Slow Stick, but he is terrified of crashing it, and/or looking like a fool in front of the other guys where we fly; especially since one is his co-worker. Most of the guys are really good pilots too. I have tried to tell him that crashing and fixing is part of the hobby (I haven't had to do that much, thank God). I attribute most of my success to my Real Flight 6.0 sim. I got the sim right after I crashed the FB Stratos and knew I needed to know more about RC flying, even though I have been flying RC helis for about six years. Oh well, maybe this weekend he'll get the cojones to fly.

    It is a very good plane to begin with. I was able to fly it across my backyard and land (more like a safe crash land) without any prior experience. I just started out going in straight lines up and down my yard. A necessary mod for a beginner is a prop saver. I made my own with a wingnut and i bought some o-rings to keep the prop on. Be sure to make sure it works and know how the prop saver works if you do plan on making one. You can also just buy one, make sure it fits the shaft on your motor though...

    I don't mean to brag . . . wait, yes I do mean to brag. I love my slow sticks.
    This is my 17th Slow Stick. Motor is a 2826/05 on a GWS 38mm motor mount. Fuselage is 10mm x 1000mm Pultruded Carbon from Gorilla Bobs. Since Slow Stick #3 I've been shortening my wings and creating winglets (which I swear by for stability). I shorten the width and use fairly heavy carbon fiber tubes epoxied to a trimmed trailing and leading edge the entire length of the wing. Use Scotch Extreme Tape for extra strength. (Home Depot sells this tape at the lowest price) HS82 metal gear servos. Elevator and rudder created from scratch (this one is fairly boring to look at, but turns on a dime) I fly this stick regularly at Seal Beach, CA in over 15 mph winds without an issue. I average about 3000 flights from my stick, which includes night flying.     Those are some great looking slowstiks.
    I've never posted before but I have to commend such awesome work with the stiks.
    I was just getting ready to put another stik together and will be using some of your techniques.
    Can you give any info on the sweet landing gear?

    Hi - Thanks for the comments. For my landing gears I use piano wire from Hobby People, or any old school hardware store. I picked up a wire bender from the internet, which makes accurate bending a breeze. The piano wire in the picture is a ridiculous 4 mm thick, but I hate having to re-bend my landing gear in the field by hand after a rough landing. I've been adding a few bends to the landing gears lately to absorb hard blows.

    It is to reduce torque.

    I did it mainly because i've never seen it done to a slow stick before. As well with the other mods i've done to this one. Retracts,..swept wing and horizontal stab. etc...

    It is awesome. Not too much power, but enough.

    It also sounds really cool especially if you chop throttle while in a dive,..one motor stops spinning before the other and it makes a really weird sound for a few seconds.

    The tricky part was mounting it nicely. I ended up using a modified gws plastic mount and also a PVC cap cut down.


    This slow stick usually gets a lot of attention at the flying sites I go to. every bit of it has been modified or changed from its stock configuration.


    Here are some better shots of the motor mount, retracts, and tail,.. elevator and rudder servos mounted on the tail.

    I am wondering what prop should i run on my SS? I am currently using 2s on an unknown motor (got it through a trade...) but now i am running a 9x6 without any heat issues... I was thinking i should go to a 10x4.7 sf or a 9x4.7.

    Hi - I might be looked down upon for making a prop suggestion without knowing which motor you have, but am gonna do it anyway. If the prop you're using doesn't give you any heat issues then you' re probably good, but I'd dump the 9x6 for a 9x4.7 slow flyer prop. I think it'll be more efficient for you. You could experiment with a 10x4.7, but on a 2s lipo, that's pushing it. Let me know what you do - I'm interested to see how it works out.

    I could only find a similar model online that says 700kv, but since i cant weigh mine accurately, i cant tell whether its that model or not. The dimensions match up though...

    I am currently working on a mod on my slow stick. I am basically building it backwards. I don't have enough parts at the moment, so I am going to some stuff from my other stick.

    Yesterday i was in the air and space museum in DC and i saw that the wright brothers did something like that. They put the elevator in the front and apparently it helps recover from a stall... Rudder goes in the back and the motor is mounted behind the wing like a pusher.

    My 3 attempts today failed. The first two times my nose gear didn't hold up and the nose just went in. I had to modify them twice to fix the problem. My third attempt, it went down and as soon as it lifted, it flipped. I guess when it got ready to rotate, it had too much much elevator. It also looks like it needs some airspeed to lift off as well. It isn't a short take-off like the standard stick. So I will try it at the airfield tomorrow on a smooth runway.

    Well I got the landing gear issue fixed, but it flips on take off every time. I believe I had too much canard surface, so I reduced it by a large amount. The next flight flipped too, but not as bad. So I believe I am on the right track. I am going to reduce the canard surface a little each time until I find the right amount. I am currenty on hold because the motor wires got jacked up and have to order another motor.
