I have flown contest gliders from a winch in some nasty weather during Eastern Soaring Leauge contests. But I would not say I enjoyed it.

Aren't you on rcgroups.com? Where do they hold those contests at in LI? I've been over Montauk before and wished I had taken my sailplane with me, once I saw so much open and unobstructed areas.

www.lisf.org is our club on Long Island. Club contests are for members only.

We also host 3 Eastern Soaring League contests a year. www.flyesl.org Those are open to any AMA member.
