Default Scratch built T-6 Texan

After reading about blue foam on another forum I had to try it out.
I bought the blue fan fold foam from Home Depot.

I had an old set of plans for an Ace simple T-6 and here you have it. The wing is 36" around 200 SQ " . Power a GWS 280 geared motor with a 10x4.7 prop.

As of now it weighs 10.5 oz's with the flight gear and a LiOn 2 cell pack. I wanted a full house so I have Ali,Rud, and ele for controlls.
Im not to the point of flying it yet but hope to be done soon.

If it flys I will paint it yellow and red. Happy flying John

Default Thanks for the reply

Thanks Klink
It's not expensive if you already have the radio gear. I paid $10.99 for the 280 motor. And ended up with all of this fom for $23.99. This is what is left after the plane was built. I think I used a 1 to 2 sheets of the stuff and a hot glue gun. John

How are you cutting the parts out? This looks to be an interesting project. Can't wait for the flight reports. Good Luck Dave

Default Need more power

Thanks for the replys guys.
Well I test flew the T-6 today or tried to anyway not enough power. With some uptrim and a toss at WOT it glided 30 feet and landed level. Just not enough power. I tried the geared 280 2.8.1 and a 10x4.7 no good. Also the same with an 8x6 same thing. I think it needs the same motor that the GWS zero has .

The zero uses a geared 370 with a 10x8 prop. Looks like that will be my next purchas. Now I have to figure what size the plane needs to be to fly with the IPS system and build on of those. So I can use my Qualcom packs with it .

I cut out the plans from an old ace simple AT-6 kit.
Then just use an exato knife after tracing the templit . I used a hot glue gun and also some superbond kind of like industreal elmers glue. I bought the foam and got around 26 sheets for $23.00 I used 2 1/2 sheets so you can see it can be very cheep but labor intensive.

Default Another T-6

Hi Hobby
As you can see I have been busy. Here you can get an idea of my progress. Their are serveral more pices to the puzzel left to cut.
For those that asked how I did the cowl here you can see how the rings stack up before sanding.

Got to get back to work and finish this T-6. Unfourtently I completed the wing befor I shot the photo. There are 8 pices that make up the wing not counting the ailerons.

I am going to try to build somthing smaller next time. My new idea is a profile Extra300 that will be powered with the GWS IPS stick motor. Around 24" wing ? Or what ever will hold the equipment weight in the air. John

Default Time to build another

I flew my T-6 3 flights yesterday. The GWS EPS300C with a 10X8 prop pulls the plane nicely. Yesterday we had around 10mph winds and the plane seemed to take it well.

On my wing I didn't build in any wash out and with heavy elevator or aileron movment I was experiancing tip stall and a mild snap. Still yet it would pull out of that easy enough.

On a fast low downwind pass towards me the little plane got behind me and woops I dorked it in. Compressed the nose and broke the fuse in front of the wing.

With throttle management the 7cell 8.4v 350ma nicad GWS pack last around 5 min and 3min total full throttle. The second T-6 I'm building has some washout built in to tame the snap.

I built the first with rudder thinking I would put gear on it . I will remove the rudder on the next and just use ele,ail controlls. John

Default second T-6 coming togeather

Hey Hobby

Can you tell its a T-6 yet ha ha. I am finishing the wing after I post this. This is the straight aileron version it's a little lighter than the first .

But with 220 sq of wing it will carry any pack that you wan't to throw on it. John

Default Scratch built T-6 Texan

Hi Hobby

I used testors model paint on my Tiger Moth. I have't painted this blue foam yet. But I have a frien at work that has had good luck with Tamiya acrylic paint on the blue foam. It may require a paint propelent pack or airbrush tho. You can get it at the art suply store or a craft store. I have an air brush on order and expect it next week. I'll let you know how the paint works out.

By the way the repair is coming along on the proto type T-6.
Here is a shot of it. You can see the longerons for support. John

Default flight chacteristics

The T-6 seemed to have alot of pull with the 370. It had good climb.
If your used to a lite stick this is a differant animal. More of a semi -semetrical wing. Kind of a go where you point it plane.

It wasn't overyly fast but thinking in slow stick it's fast probably 25 to 30 mph just a guess . Is the speed 400 geared ? I havn't seen the zero fly but I would think it would be similar.

The ailerons are very effective. As far as plans I don't have those and am droping down in size to the GWS stick motor for now.

By the way I will put some extra foam in the box so you can test paint on it. Wouldn't want to melt your airplane.

I am wondering if you need more support for the 400 ? Maybe some glass the fuse is just foam . Oh well how much more pull is that over the 370 ? John

Default s400 3.1 gearbox

i had that s400 in my skyscooter and well it was flying fast about 35 to 45 mph airspeed looks faster tho

the up weight for the scooter was around 18 to 20 oz

now if i put a s400 in that texan it might weight about 15-17 oz total up weight i think it would go about 45-50 mph

with a 9x7 prop or a 9x8 prop

also ill send ya the sky scooter just the plane if a drop a few bucks if so let me know

thanks

Default Twins

Hi Hobby
Thanks for the offer but I don't have much use for the sky scooter. Not my style of plane. I originaly wanted a Zero in trade but we have made other arangments now.

There is a website where you can put in figures such as motor type pack size and prop size and pitch and it will give you the aproxament airspeed .Try this site http://www.csd.net/~cgadd/eflight/calcs.htm
I am finished with your airplane. I have also repaired mine . So first non windy day I will try it again.

Either I'm seeing double or hey your airplane is ready.
Here is a shot. John

Your airplane will be here waiting for you when you can complete the transaction. Nice speakers but no thanks. 3 weeks will go by before ya know it. And the weather may even get better. John
