Default GWS S.S. 8-cell setup

If I want 9.6v, what batteries would you suggest if I upgrade to a 400 size motor? I've heard that AAAs might not work for this... Also, what ESC would be able to handle such a load? (amp ratings?).

The KAN 1050 packs should work well. I'd recomend a 15amp ESC.

Would 2/3AA and 2/3A batteries be able to handle the drain of a 400 motor?

Yes, 2/3AA (KAN 650's) can produce 10A, 2/3A (KAN 1050's) can produce 15A. Your 400 will only need 8A or so.

There are many threads on this site with people being very dissapointed with 400s on the SS.
Dr Kiwi has addressed many of them and since he seems to know what he is talking about, perhaps he can comment on why the following combo would not work:

20 Amp ESC (ex-Zagi)
9.6 Volt 1700mAh NiMh (ex-Zagi) battery.

performance was terrible.

Q1. Does the size of the battery effect max current with NiMH like it does with Lipo?
Q2. Does Voltage or Amp Draw burn up a motor?

I don't mean to steal your thread but I would hate to see you dissapointed like many others who went down this path.

I think that if geared and propped correctly, the 400 can be a good upgrade. However, the extra weight of motor and batts can negate the power increase.

Generally larger batteries are better for higher amps, but it really has to do with the internal resistance of the cells that limits amp draw.

Amp draw is what kills motors, but amp draw is also related to voltage. Amp draw goes up with voltage when powering the same motor/gearbox/prop combination.

thanks, that was what I thought.
My 350 D motors were burning up on the SS with a 1080 prop and 9.6 volts.
I noticed that the 3DX suggests a 3cell LIPO (11.1), 1180 and a 6Volts 350D.
Would this not burn up?

So do you guys/gals all use 300-size motors? I don't want to go about replacing mine every month, so would a 7-cell/300 setup be more sensible than an 8-cell/400 setup? BTW, what amp load can AAAs handle?

I flew my SS with the original EPS 300C (5.33:1 GB) on 8 cell NiMh KAN 1050. (KAN 650 will also work - just less duration.)

After my second replacement motor, I decided to upgrade to an EPS 400C with the 5.28:1 gear box. I flew it for a short time with 10 NiMh KAN 1050 I had seen recommended and it was a definite improvement over the 300. I now fly it with a 3S TP2100 Lipo and the weight savings of that pack and the extended duration is wonderful. I feel that the increased power benefits to a 400 upgrade only work out using either 12 volts NiMh/NiCd or 11 volts(3S) Lipo. I fly with a GWS 12x8 HD prop.

Brushless is the best upgrade, but is fairly expensive when you need to buy both the motor and the brushless ESC. My second SS has an MPJet 25/35/20 brushless which costs $50 including a 4:1 gear box. The ESC costs about another $75 - so you are looking at $125 for the most inexpensive brushless upgrade I am aware of. Other brushless motors fitted to GWS gear boxes are available for $80-$100.

Eventually one will eat up the cost savings of brushed motors with the replacement costs of $8-$11 a pop. [] But with a limited RC budget, brushed motors take less initial cash outlay.

I have read that the newer GWS 350 motor(which pops right in the 300 gear box) comes close to the performance of the 400. That motor costs about $12. I have not tried one yet, but when the original motor in my Beaver dies, I am going to upgrade with the 350.

Just so I can keep my motor options open, I think I'm going to get an 8-cell (or should it be 7? Not sure with stock SS...) KAN1050 custom made from cheapbatteries.com. Will this even work in a stock SS? It'd be over 6.4oz... Should I go for a smaller battery size?

A 7-cell KAN 1050 will work absolutely fine on a stock Slow Stick - they can carry the weight with no problem, and staying with 7-cells will do wonders for your motor's longevity. [read all the posts of guys burning up motors on 8-cells and 3s Lipoly - gee, I wonder why GWS recommends no more than 7!].

I wish I could find a 350 motor. Everyone is out of stock.
Any ideas?

Zagibond - Just buy a 6v Graupner 300 - it is the same motor!

Dr. Kiwi,
Would you continue to give me all this advice if you knew that I was a Seth Efrikan and my wife was an Ausie?
Where would I get the Graupner and 10 tooth gear?
