Default Save yerself 10 bux, build an Aerobird tail from coroplast

Here's an idea, hopefully there isnt a thread on this yet. You can save yerself $10 and a whole lot of Aerobird challenger tails by getting some 2 mm or 4 mm coroplast, tracing the wing pattern over it, and cutting it out and mounting as usual with the regular mounting parts. Make sure the flutes are running length wise so you can create flap hinges by removing the top half (or bottom half) of one of the flutes. I have one out of 2 mm green coroplast and it's survived longer then the foamie ones.

My canopy also sheared off and I"m thinking of making a new one out of 2 mm coroplast too, since I might end up saving some weight that way. I just need an efficient way of hinging the whole system. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I got a few pieces of coroplast from HomeDepot. Some of their outdoor gardening packaging material's made from it. They might have a few extra boxes laying around that they can give you. They actually charged me 10 cents a piece for mine. Otherwise you can get the stuff from signs that are being thrown away.

Thanks,
Ralph

Good Idea! I haven't had to replace my tail yet, but I'm sure that time will be just around the corner. I have an old sign made of chloroplast that will do just the trick. As far as canopy repair, I created a hinge by drilling holes on the top side of the canopy about 1/8 of an inch in, and did the same on the fuse side. Then used zip ties to hold them together. You have to be careful not to zip them too tight to allow fro free motion. Good luck

Thats a good idea Henk,
I also have some 6 mm yellow coroplast. I was thinking if I make a coroplast canopy, I can create a pressure hinge by cutting out the internal support flute out of the side, so that the top and bottom of the coroplast sandwich the fuselage on top. Then the pressure of the rubberband would hold all the rest into place. I should post a picture when I'm done.
