The crazy 8 looks good and flys good. I was impressed by the slow flight characteristics of this airplane. Fast or slow the plane was rock solid stable and landings were slow and easy. of course I used a brushless 020 motor for power but im sure that the stock setup would work just fine.

you still out there dude. I would think you have had more flights by now. Whats the verdict. I just got one over the winter that I have been waiting to get out. I also went with the brushless setup. I used a Hacker B40. Can't wait to test it out. Not many people fly or at least talk about this plane????? But I have only heard good things.

The C8 is a great little electric hotrod! But, it also slows down well and stays very stable. I just got back from the local soccer field... winds gusting to 20! I put in three excellent flights. The plane will hang and roll on its axis ... right into the wind with zero fwd airspeed. Really cool! I'm using Hacker B20 with APC 10x4.7 on 10 cells. Be sure to use lots of expo on aileron and elevator. I'm using 30%

Here are a few more pics of my setup... using a EPP belly skid left over from a Zagi. Low drag and it works.

Inside the battery hatch. Some surgery was needed to fit the oversize battery pack.

well, today was the day....like a true impatient winter dumb ass, I took the old C8 up for it's first flight. Flew great in heavy wind...I'm guessing 15+. Fast as hell and super responsive! Even with the throws down. All was great until that last gust while landing! Hit funny and snapped the fuselage right in two...well almost, but at that point what's the diff? Looks like I found a week point thats for sure. Not a scratch on the rest of the plane, but it now folds in two.

sonofa...

I'll be back!

Sorry to hear about the crackup. The C8 is one responsive little speed demon! I'll bet with that Hacker B40 it was ballistic! Is your plane repairable? BTW, ... I told you that lots of expo was needed to tame that ridiculously fast roll rate!!! Well, I hope that you are able to get her back up soon. I still think it's one great flying little plane ... However, that first flight kind of takes your breath away. Oh, one other question: Did you takeoff ROG or hand launch?

TX

One side note: I almost lost mine on the maiden flight due to the overly sensitive ailerons... I believe that if you "overpower" the C8 like we do, the aileron throws must be reduced AND use a healthy amount of expo. Once you get the first few flights in, you can start adding more throw. I hope this advice helps those who are just getting ready to put their first flights in with the Crazy 8.

ya, I'll get it back up in the air soon. I think I will be able to fix it, but I might just buy a new one for parts. something tells me it won't be the last time i have to fix something. About the expo, the problem is, I can't adjust mine. I was..and I will say was, trying to get away with a older radio. ie... it's does not have that feature. Which leads me to another question. I'm looking for the last radio i will ever buy. Think i will go with JR because that will work with all my current planes. thinking 8 channel, any rec's? This plane still rocks!! flew great, it's just that landing thing!!

I sent you a PM regarding the radio. I don't want to get the thread off track. If I make a suggestion ... it could cause another pi$$in' contest.

i know, the futaba police will be all over. I got the radio, need to switch everything out. I got a new C8 because it was only 30 bucks short of the full kit if you want to replace and of the main parts. But fixed the old one as well. which I didn't think I would be able to do. Might put a 480 in that one just to see the diff. ever fly one without a blushless? how was it? will be much easier with that new radio, thats for sure.

I'm sure that you will really like that new radio! I have not flown the C8 with any other power package. However, there is a very good review on ezone that discribes three different setups. Keep us posted!

Couldn’t agree more with the control surface set-up—go with low rates or this thing will do about 3-4 rolls a sec. It will become a handful real fast. If you keep throws at recommended rates and add plenty of expo they fly great.

I have experimented with a couple set-ups:

1) Direct drive, MPI Cobalt speed 400 – 8 cell, 9.6v CP1300 mAh battery – APC 8x4E & 10x4E. I can’t recommend this set-up—flight durations where about 3 minutes and overall performance was dismal.

2) Astro Flight 020 w/planetary geared (4.4 to 1) -- 8 cell, 9.6v CP1300 mAh battery –APC 11x7E. Huge difference! Flight times between 5-6 minutes, excellent performance.

Brushless is definitely the way to go. However, I still wanted a little more vertical, so I switched to the smaller and lighter HeCell, 10 cell, 12v 1100mAh NiMH battery and a APC 12x6E.

This has proved to be the set-up (at least for me) with about 6-7 minute flights, great vertical and overall aerobatic performance.
Now I love it-- it’s a real showstopper.

Bottom-line... great little electric if you’re willing to spend the $$ on a good brushless motor and speed control. I don’t think it’s worth the trouble with a speed 400—the performance just isn’t there.

deadstk,

I think I'll have to give those HeCells a try in my C8. By the way, thanks for your confirmation on the control throws. I thought that I was just being a wimp.

By the way, which gear box are you using on your Astro 020? I have an 020 (803Z) that I might want to try... If I can make myself decommission one of my ZAGIs.

I'm using an Astro Flight 020 (802P) with a 4.4 to 1 planetary gear.

I'm back.....

well, all I can say is what a difference a radio can make!! After being able to put expo at 30% and D/R down a bit as well, this plane went from being "outta control" to a stable, but responsive sky eater. I have to get some bigger wheels for landings for the 10X7 prop, but the C8 is fly great!! Just can't believe how much the radio had helped. Most guys don't talk much about that to beginners, but having the capabilities to make these adjustments is key to learning and not crashing your planes!! Should have spent a little more from the beginning. Anyway, she screamed with the following, but this ain't no "park flyer"

Hacker B40 4:1 plant-grearbox-10X7
Jeti 70 Amp
7 cell 1500 Nicd

a good 5 minutes with more left over, just had to put my heart back in my chest!!

yeeee hawww

ChicagoGj,

I'm glad to hear of your success! I thought 30% expo was about right on mine and it's good to know that your setup confirms that amount. It sure makes a BIG difference in the C8.

Sure did Texan. Thanks for the advice, that's where I got the 30% starting point. Seemed to be plenty, especially when your new the crazy 8. Can't wait to get better with it.....doesn't seem like there is much this bad boy won't be able to do.
