Is this normal?Tiger Moth
Hi folks,
This is my first post in this great forum and community. I'm from Switzerland (Europe) and I bought a Tiger Moth two days ago. Today I had the chance to fly it...but I got some problems:
1) At the first flight I had to trim the TM but...have a look at the picture, only with this trim, the TM is flying straight...why I have to trim it so much ?
2) At about 20m I lost my Propeller (never found it again) so I will go this afternoon to my local Hobby Store and buy a new one, should I upgrade to another one ? My power system is the GW/P-TM-280AS1 and what is the best way to fix the propeller ?

Don't worry about the trim just fly it and enjoy it. I have had mine for about three years and have done every kind of damage imagineable and she just keeps flying, ugly trim and all. For the prop problem you want to run the nuts to the end of the threads closest to the motor and give it a good tightening with a lock nut on the out side. Try not to strike the ground with it on take off. Also get rid of the nicad and go at least to a 7 cell 300 mah NiMh, you will love this plane!

RE: Is this normal?Tiger Moth
Hi vicman, many thanks for your quick answer !
So, no worry about ugly trims, thats really cool !
I got another "Problem" I tried to keep the dihedral angle at 80mm, but whan my Epoxy was cured, I noticed that the angle was only 60mm, should I leave it or do I have to "rebuild" the wing assembly ?
Here in Switzerland I cant buy the original GWS Propeller (my TM was an US import), so what are the alternatives? ( I use 2cell 740lipo, with a Graupner PICO-25 Lipo ESC-->20AMPS)
Can I use 3cell Lipo's with this Motor ?

Hi Sven,
A little less dihedral will work just fine since the Tiger Moth has plenty of rudder authority.
Vicman's suggestion to replace the NiCd pack with an NiMH pack is a good one. You can double your flight duration for the same weight and add a cell (or two) for additional top end power.
If you want a bigger power boost, you can use a 3-cell Lipo pack if you swap the DX-A geared motor for a DX-C geared motor and use the same prop. No need to change the ESC when switching to Lipo cells. The GWS ESC will cutoff the motor just fine.
Good luck and welcome to the Electric Aircraft Universe forums of RCU.

RE: Is this normal?Tiger Moth
I personaly have had better luck with the APC series of electric slow flyer propellers!! They are fantastic, and theyre much more effecient!!!!! You will need to use the little spacer that comes with it and then add a piece of small fuel tubing inserted in the propeller to make it work due to the shaft openning being a bit larger than the gws props and not locking on the shaft liek the stock props do. This is also better since it gives your prop a bit of a shock protection in case you hit anything. Hope this helps Jon

@dalosiman
And which one do you suggest ? APC props we got here, so I think it's possible to find it...
My local hobby store said that I should try the Multiplex Teddy propeller, it's a 12.5x11, is that ok or better not to try... ?

Multiplex & Graupner are the same over there aren't they? The 12.5x11 sounds kinda big though. APC has a new Electric funfly prop that matches the gws spindle an nut lock I havn't tried it on mine yet and I don't remember the numbers. But APC is good stuff.

RE: Is this normal?Tiger Moth
Sorry for the mistake, it's in mm ... the diameter is 12.5mm. I found the US version, it's a 5 x 4,5“ .
here's a picture of it:
I don't think that Multiplex and Graupner are the same here....

RE: Is this normal?Tiger Moth
9x 4.7 ? is kinda big...diameter 23cm ? the GWS was not so big I think...
Not to forget, I have a direct drive system....
I found a APC 9x4.7; 8x3.8; 9x3.8; 9x5; 8x4,5 so I hope I will find an alternative...but they all seem to be very big...

RE: Is this normal?Tiger Moth
read what the man says
Most of the TMs come with a gear drive IPS motor, as you can see [link=http://www.officeshops.com/gws/motors/]here[/link] and use a bigger prop
your has one of [link=http://www.gws.com.tw/english/product/powersystem/010.htm]these[/link], so uses a far smaller prop.
Sorry i can be of more help, but it might get the thread back on track

RE: Is this normal?Tiger Moth
I know that most TM came with the IPS and that the IPS uses a bigger prop. So the question is, which non GWS prop for a non IPS system...
So I found some APC props for Slowflyer:
http://www.top-model.ch/shop/prdtOve...eller&ln=de-de
and the normal props:
http://www.top-model.ch/shop/ctgyOve...tarr-Propeller
which is the best for me ?

RE: Is this normal?Tiger Moth
I had the exact same problem with my DD 280 TM It needed lots of trim correction, it also did not turn very well. Forget replacing the prop and replace the motor with the ips geardrive, I think the gearing is the S1. As soon as I did this it flew great with no trim correction.
Yes I did try right trust to correct the trim problem, I beleave that the DD motor is no good for the TM the plane has too much drag. The bigger prop and geardrive gives the plane more thrust.

RE: Is this normal?Tiger Moth
thanks a lot !
So, I will try to get the IPS system, it will take two weeks minimum....I have to import it...
But in the meantime, can I use the APC 5.7x3 ?
Yeah! I saw that a local Hobby Store got the IPS system of a PicoStick, is this the same for the TM ?

RE: Is this normal?Tiger Moth
Yes I think the pico stick is the same S1 gearing as the TM. Also I would give the APC 5.7x3 a try it should be fine until you get the other motor and gearbox
