Voodoo51,
STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT ATTEMPT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !
You are going to fry the ESC. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Per CC it's only rated to 12 cells max,14.4 volts, on it's Bec.
You are running 22.2 with a 6 pack.
You must run a seperate Bec.

CADETMAN,
I'm currently finishing off my new Stryker (which is a shameless copy
of your Mk2 Stryker - thankyou sir) and hit a bit of a snag hooking up the BP21.
Lightly soldered it to the ESC (Black to black etc) and of course it
ran backwards as its primarily a tractor type engine. Is it OK to reverse the
wires ie black to red - red to black when connecting it to the ESC. Don't want to end up
with a Big Bang.By the way what does the white wire do!
The new Stryker has been kit bashed to vaguely resemble a Vulcan Bomber.
With all the mods I have done I thought I better make sure it flew OK before
letting loose with the lipos so I balanced it up with a 4 cell flight pack and took a walk
on the Light Side - GLIDING. After a couple of test glides in a park took the Stryker
out to a gliding site and biffed it off, then brought it in to land - 20 minutes later.
Actually had a ball - Don't tell Glacier Girl. By the way, one of the reasons the Stryker
bodies keep going out of stock is that those damn sloper guys are gobling them up by the
box full, covering them in tape and then doing mortal combat with them - all over the world!
If the Stryker survives the first few flights I'll give it the Vulcan camo paint scheme
and post some pics.
Look forward to your answer on the motor hook up - thanks

Ok it sounds like safety talk time again.
PLEASE do not go willy-nilly into high speed birds.
Going by the info Voodoo posted, he would have seen a beautiful imitation of a Roman Candle.
You are talking serious volts and amps when you step up a bird for speed.
Voodoo's set up is pulling in excess of 37 amps static. Just for comparison, your house outlets are rated at 15 or 20. One small error in set up or calculations is all Murphy needs to wack you or knock your bird out of the sky.

Stepping up a bird to the DARK SIDE means you are no longer flying a toy. You are now handling a weapon that will do some serious damage if something goes wrong.

FLY FAST BUT FLY SAFE!

KiwiKid,
Copy a master, and you will do well.
A brushless motor is just like the electric motors in you home appliances. It works off alternating current, that's why it doesn't need brushes to make it work.
Swap any 2 wires on your motor to esc connection to reverse the direction. Motor doesn't care which way it turns.

Well guys I did something very silly yesterday.. Got my NEW GP1100's yesterday and just had to go try them. I usually fly in a big open area of a park near my house. (same place as Ray Ray ) anyway I wanted to see if they made a diff. but didnt want to drive to the park, so I went to a soccer field near my house. No big deal right, WRONG

The soccer field is near TRAIN TRACKS. So I threw my bird up and made a nice left then another left doing well, Then I say to myseld OH MY the Stryker is close to the ELECTRICAL LINES for the trains. Well too late BUZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ the wing touches one of the lines, The plane shuts down and comes screaming straight down onto the train tracks. It was like a FOAM explosion.. I came home with 5 pieces. A big square chunk broke around the motor and another broke right behind the nose.. I glued everything together and she looks good except I fried the ESC.

few questions

If im on channel 6, can I buy the ESC from the P-51 on channel 6 ?
Or does anyone have a used channel 6 ESC they would sell ?

built a heatsink for my lipos and tried it last evening.. what a difference it made.. my 4s packs come out just warm where previously they would have exited much warmer/borderline hot..

all I did was bend a piece of aluminium flashing in a square U shape as long as the pack.. the up sides extend past the width of the pack and rounded off, they extend above the pack and catch some air .. then notched so that my velcro straps can still snuggly support the pack... very simple design and effective as well.. just thought I'd share..

tigerIII is going to have a aluminium lined batt bay with permanent fins.. full contact with the foam insulates the cell that's in contact... one needs to get that heat out.. the heatsink does just that.

BEAT THE HEAT..

Why don't we just invent a water cooled or intercooled heatsink for our batteries and esc's, heck even the motors? It works for PC's. It will add weight, but heck when your pushing over 8 pounds of thrust out of your Stryker, what would the wieght penalty really mean? Just my sarcastic take this morning , nothing personal, lol. Let's go have some safe flying this week-end, except for GlacierGirl who will be stuck in his kitchen all week-end(Thanks Mrs. Glacier Girl!(Heck, maybe she saved you from Murphy)).

NEVER Reverse the Battery polarity on Brushless motors

to reverse the direction of a brushless motor you change 2 of the 3 wires
one configaration would be

red-red
white-black
black-white

a brushless motor has 3 sets of windings configered 120 degrees apart
3x120=360 dregrees 1 revolution
each winding is energised in turn and pulls the shaft around,
if you spin the BP21 you will hear and feel the steps

one more thing.. Make sure you put the prop facing the right way or your thust will be well down and the prop will screetch !

i see Glacier answered first [8D]
at least we are consistant

Nitro,
Unless you are using a PZ transmitter, the P51 rx will not work, diff frequencies.

well my 2-2200 packs are wired in parallel, so max volts should only be 14.0 only doubled capacity 4400.It could handle around 60 amps output.

VOODO,
YOU HAVE ME TOTALLY CONFUSED.[sm=spinnyeyes.gif]
First you were running a 6s pack, now it's 2, 2s packs paralleled. Paralleled is still 7.4 volts.

Ok,
So you have 3, 3s packs wired parallel = 3s3p
How much does all that weigh????????

3s3p2200= just short of a ton.LOL.. kidding.. my 4s1p 2200 weighs in a 7.25 oz.
that puts 9 cells at 16+oz. ... better give 'er a heave..

Cadetman.. the only issue I have with heat is the cell that is contacting the foam.. I place my packs on edge so one side is flush against the foam, the other side I slip the deans plug beside so it gets a bit of airflow.. the one side against the foam is always my warmest cell.. last night it was the cool side .. wish I'd have thought of it sooner... the way I position my pack all I really need is one flat piece of flashing notched for my velcro and sticking up about 1/2"/ 15mm or so to catch some air.. also, I'm running with the batt hatch and canopy off.. waay more WOT and a lot less worries not sure about internal heat, but last night they ran much cooler with the sink in place..

go to all pictures and search for:
1) lemon side
2) darth lemon
3) the dark side

i emailed him today to ask what he used...and i'll post his response as soon as he answers - for any noobies like me looking for a good paint setup

Cadetman & Glacier Girl - thanks for the advice regarding the BP21 set up,
worked a treat. Did the maiden today and OH MY GOD totally thrilled. Only
been in this hobby about a year and this was by far the most fun day I have had.
Did the maiden out at our club field- hows this for a butt clincher:
- First powered flight of kit bashed Stryker
- First (for me) flight of Lipo and brushless set up
- First powered flight with my new JR computer radio
- and, oh yes, a dozen club members looking on (they gave me free reign of the
field for the maiden).
Stryker performed fantastically on the 7x6 prop going vertical for about 150m from
level flight. Looked like it was weightless. At one point took it out to the left about 200m
gave it full up trim and full trottle and just watched hands off as it sailed by in a 45 degree
climb that would have gone on forever.
I'm just a poor student with 5 other dependent models, so this budget set up is totally brill.
I also have a stock Stryker flying on the 9 cell packs from my PKZ P51 with custom electronics.
This is also a brilliant upgrade if you can afford it. The combination of increased power and better
electronics transforms the stockie into a nimble speed machine.
Thanks for the inspiration and guidance.
Will post some pics once the Vulcan camo paint scheme is finished.

Cadetman, bit off topic but I see a group of your countrymen have scraped up around 4 million
quid to get a Vulcan back in the air. An awesome sight apparently. Its my all time favorite aeroplane.
While researching the colour scheme for my Stryker came accross the pics below. Allways thought the
Vulcan camo scheme was a bit naff against the English country side, but take a look at it on its way to
drop an H bomb on Moscow.

Cheers

i have 2 framed 18x14 pics hanging on Office wall of Vulcan
a friend of mine was commisioned to take the photographs with 9 other photographer's,
they were taken from the back of a Hercules bomber,
when they lowered the rear cargo door to take the Pics the Photographers started Jostling to get the best camera angle [X(],
the door was quickly closed and the photographers were read the Riot Act (Brit term for "Talking Too")
a cargo net was then strung about 4 foot high across the door before it was lowered a second time !

KiwiKid
keep the Stryker as light as possible and she goes Brill on the BP21
mine is much heavier now due to repairs needed on the very rare occasion(s) when i have prang it
more wieght puts the motor and esc under stress and obviously slows it down,
what size Lipo are you running?
another thing to remember is faster speed means more Spectacular Prangs [X(]

Cadetman, Yes I have had a eye on the weight all along.
Sacraficed a bit of weight to strengthen the body as this model
is precious to me. Carbon fibre rod accross the back to form a triangle
with the existing ones and bamboo skewers through the front and rear
of fuse. Strapping tape over portions of lower wing which I will leave
unpainted as the Vulcan has a white underside anyway and it looks good
in the air with just two roundels on it. Paint and WBPU on top
will add a bit of extra weight, but I figure the Stryker is going to spend
99% of its time hanging on my bedroom wall so it might as well look the
part as well.
Running small 3 cell 1100mAh lipos (weighing 92g) 10C constant (around
11 amp) with bursts at 15C (around 16.5 amp). 17 amp ESC seems to cope OK
with that. I have big functioning Vulcan air intakes cut into the leading edge of
the wings with channels to the battery compartment and ESC/RX area so they all
get a good blast of airflow. Had 4 flights averaging 12 minutes today and everything
came out just warm, so seems like a good set up. Couldn't keep the smile off my face!
A question - next project is just to upgrade the motor on my stockie to the 480BB, any
problems in doing a water breakin on the BB?
After that I'm on to a brushless Me 163 Komet from http://www.sbrcmodels.com/store/agora.cgi
- very similar to the Stryker but even tougher as its built like a Zagi with tape over foam.

Thanks
