And if that didn't get your safety button pushed, read this.

It's a fun hobby, but does have it's dangers. Be it you or the guy flying next to you.[]

Glacier

EDIT: pack is now outside, in salt water and can stay there till the UK freezes over.
you shouldnt have to wait too Long ! we are comming into winter here [>:]

Seriously though.. you may have noticed i have Never given advice on disposing of a lipo pack..
NiMh yes but never a lipo pack,
i have read the rules but at no point does it ever explain how much salt or what type of salt to use!
the idea behind putting salt in the water is not to neutralize the Lithium.. its to slow down the reation that takes place,
not all table salts are the same !
at work we have to dispose of sodium Lamps (street lamps the yellow light type) and they are fun when you add the water [X(]
i am still not going to offer advice on disposal of lipo's but very soon you will be able to send them to a re-cycling centre

i think you had a lucky escape Glacier.. thats pressuming mrs Glacier is an understanding woman [>:]

Glacier
TOO CLOSE!! [X(] Thank God your OK.
That's one reason i have waited on lipos.[]

My question and cadetman can help answer is what makes lipos go BOOM??

Next time maybe seal and bury in ground??? I just am unsure on these . Most cell phones use lipo-ion type. I have heard stories of them going boom also. Make sure to write to mfg. to tell them about it in case there is a tech. prob. ( recall??)
On a lighter note it would be interesting to see that happen in flight.
Oh, if you have a bomb damage sale please post so we can bid.
GLAD YOUR OK!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh I forgot
If many of you have read along, my "shop" is in the boiler room ( old coal storage bin and nobody uses it) of my church. ( built in 1947) We had 7-8 inches of rain friday. I had 2-3 inches of water in shop-most just passing thru to the sump pump. No damage as i had moved stuff well above any water line years ago. I have not seen water in broiler room in the past 3 years. I was looking for ARK.

from memory Lithium metals reacts slowly with water to form a colourless solution of lithium hydroxide (LiOH) and hydrogen gas (H2) is given off
The resulting solution is basic because of the dissolved hydroxide. The reaction is exothermic (gives off HEAT [X(]), but the reaction is slower than that of sodium 2Li(s) + 2H2O 2LiOH(aq) + H2(g)
putting salt in the water (sodium chloride) slows the reaction down as it removes a free electron
the explosion is the hydrogen ignition [:@]

cadetman, if that is correct then that could have been the problem. Hydrogen gas is explosive and when GG poked holes in that pack, in the salt water, it shorted giving a spark! They will arc if you stick anything thru the pak.

GG? You there? You did say you poked holes in it in the water? Just a thought. Like to know the reason when something goes wrong.

cadetman, I just put the BP-21 on my Aerobird Challenger and replaced the electronics with my stuff! You can see it in my gallery. Havent test flown it yet. Expect it do ok. These HS-55 servos are much better and smoother operating than the original.

Sticks,
Yep, used a bamboo skewer, poked pack while it was under water.
I'm thinking the one cell I picked to poke, wasn't quite dead.
And saltwater set it off.
Not something I want to go through again.

Maybe it's what you mean, but I was thinking spark and hydrogen, which the lithium and salt water made. You think?

Did you look at how I mounted the BP-21 on the AeroBird?

I just put the BP-21 on my Aerobird Challenger and replaced the electronics with my stuff!
the BP21 looks like its intended to be there
that should Haul it up nicely [8D]

i just repaired a BP21, it was the first one i got and the rear end bearing dissapeared in use also the spring on the front bearing shattered so the front bearing wouldnt reach the stator bearing mount,
fortunatly i just slipped another bearing on and it fits perfectly
the bearing were only a Dollar each [8D]
these motors are so cost effective to buy and maintain,

i have 2 project on the drawing board at the moment,
one is an F16 that is a Depron build and its BIG [8D],
i was very Lucky that the Designer took the time to format the plan in A4 print out format for me,
it took 91 A4 sheets of paper and it probably took more time to cut the paper and tape it together than it will take to build it in Depron

getting back to the plot.. i was wondering if 2 BP21's mounted on the same 3mm shaft would turn a 10x6 prop,
they could be Mounted Back to Back with a single shaft [8D]

As Sgt. Schultz would say, "I know nothing about chemistry"
BP looks good on there. Question though, Does the prop clear the fusealge rod, or is it just the picture?

cadetman, I believe it would. Would be interesting. They do it with others.

GG, it clears as much as the stock prop does. Which is only about a 1/4 inch!

Any time I landed it a little hard, stock, it would throw the prop. It took me a while to figure out why it was doing that!

agcatsbest and all

Maybe it's what you mean, but I was thinking spark and hydrogen,
Hydrogen gas burns really well..

in Chemistry at school many years ago the teacher would do experiments and this is actually what happened

Good Morning children,, today we are going to do experiments with gases
the 2 gases we are going to use are oxygen and hyrogen
and on each stage i want you to write down the methord and observations

we will start by filling this balloon with oxygen...

teacher then puts balloon filled with oxygen in a Lab Clamp and takes a wooden splint and lights it..
he then blows it out so it is still glowing,

watch this he say's and pops the balloon...
instantly the wooden splint burst back into flames [X(]

Next we are going to fill the balloon with Hydrogen !
he then takes his black board point stick about 4 foot long and puts the same glowing wooden stick on the end using a rubber band ..
and at arms lenght he pops the balloon... BANG !

make sure you write down your observations.. he says..

Now i am going to fill the ballon with about 2/3rd hydrogen and 1/3 oxygen..
he then gets the window pole thats used to open the windows at the tops of the classroom and its about 12 foot long and attaches the glowing wooden splint and after moving us back he pops the Balloon..

an almighty BANG.. and it blew one of the windows Out [X(]

this brings the lesson to a complete Halt but the teacher said i want this written up as home work and handed in for Chemisrty lesson Next week,

being Good Students we all did but one Student Wrote in his Observations...

"the Teacher Popped the ballon with the Hydrogen and Oxygen and it Blew the F***ing window OUT !"

LOL!!!!!! Believe it or not, I have a good one, too. Since a kid, I have always experimented with everything. Electronics, airplanes, and, yes, chemistry!

I was 16 at the time. My dad had some hydrocloric acid in the shop at our farm. I got to messing with it, dropping aluminum in some and lighting the hydrogen. Then I figured out a way to do the aluminum thing in a rubber stoppered jar with a tube coming out of it over into another jar where in went thru another stopper into a jar filled with water. I let it bubble up thru the water and had a tube coming out the top where I put a balloon. The gas was so hot it would burst the balloon, thus the reason for running it thru water. This would fill the balloon and it would float! I thought it was really cool. I light it from a distance and watch the pretty blue flame! No added O2, tho. I told a younger friend about it and he told his (very dumb) science teacher about it. The teacher told him it did not have enough pressure to work, so I made him one and he took it to school. Well, this dumb teacher told him I bought it some where. [>:] Anyway, after school he was on the school bus and the balloon floated to the rear of the bus and a school smart ass thought it would be cool to pop the kids balloon......He leaned forward and put his lighter to it!!! It went off right in his face, singeing his eye brows and hair!!!!!!!!![sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif][sm=RAINFRO.gif][sm=bananahead.gif]

I thought it was GREAT!!!!

How's the "Vertical Stryker" coming along. Still locked up in MIB headquarters?

GG - Someone up there likes you. Close call man. Glad your OK.

Yeah I suspect the same thing when I read the post. He was vague (when questioned) abuot where this supposed event occured. Plus the injuries of the flyer/dead guy seemed unrealistic. Some people will do anything to get noticed.
Sad. [&o]

Hi Digg,

What part of that post did you think was suspect? A 20lb plane clocked at 93mph 10 feet off the ground? Or the wing covering ripping off during flight right before his eyes?

On an AMA certified field, the "air boss" would never have allowed these antics.

I find it hard to believe too.

So is aeronuts $45 package for the BP21+ESC+Connectors the best deal right now and the one that will most easily fit into a moded stock motor mount to get the thrust agle correct?

How's the "Vertical Stryker" coming along. Still locked up in MIB headquarters?

Food is shipped in so i can work on it 24/7
i have just repaired one of the BP21's and made a new pusher prop that matches a 7x6,
that may sound easy but believe me it wasnt [>:]
the VTOL stryker reminds me of a chinook helicopter,
pics and vid will be posted here as soon as it happens

This should interesting VTOL stryker. Will you have to build a sitdown portable cockpit? I'm picturing helio. type controls using both hands and both feet at once. This i can't wait to see!!!
Using a lift fan or rotating the prop motor around axis? Stryker mods. at it's best

Bleary-
On that Align 2500 try a 5.5x5.5 graupner speed- You'll like the difference. Static in field test was about 23 amps and it scooted right along. Quite a bit faster then the 6x3 with better climb. Great flight time and everything came down nice and cool.

Love to hear how the BP21 Challenger performs. I was thinking of trying that myself. Details!

On balsa versus stock flaps and hinges versus tape...I used balsa once on my BP21 Stryker. The added weight and the tendency of the balsa to rip out the hinges on the body in a bad crash convinced me to go back to the stock flaps. I use heavy duty dubro hinges with the stock flaps and just slitted the trailing edge of the wing and slitted the flaps too for the hinges and then CA'd them in. Less weight with stock flaps and less chance of body chunking in a crash. The hinges are also MUCH better at uniform flap movement and I think easier on the servos (not to mention not using balsa being easier on them in a crash). I only used three hinges and she has held up fine to some REALLY bad hits.
